Shady Rest Campground is a quite peaceful property located within 2 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Firewood is plentiful in the campground and you just help yourself. The bathhouse is a little primitive but it has hot water, toilets and showers. We also have a covered shelter which offers an indoor fireplace you are welcome to use. The town of Sparta is 12 miles away and offers several restaurants and local shops.
Stone Mountain is approximately 15 minutes away with great hiking beautiful waterfalls in the park. Wineries are plentiful and Music on Main with live bands is a great summer evening event. New River is beautiful for a kayak trip or just tubing. Brush Creek is only a mile away which offers trout fishing .

Our farm is vast and sparse,
focusing on sustainability while giving back to the community. We are a safe haven for animals and humans alike.
Situated on and between two peaks of Little Phoenix Mountain range in Jefferson Ashe County. Our sites’ altitudes range from 3100 feet to over 3600 feet, which is a lot of slope and hillside to say the least. As a guest you will be offered insane long views and limited exposure to the oldest registered breed of bovine in the world. Our Scottish Highland Cattle are majestic and fit in quite well in the NC mountainside. Located in the Blue Ridge mountains, we have natural water springs popping out, some of which are tapped to drink from. (10.1.23 currently farm springs are not accessible to guests, shatley springs up the road approx 4miles north has a public spring that we highly recommend)
If you are looking for a camping spot that is only 5-10 minutes from town (Jefferson NC or the quaint Downtown West Jefferson) but feels like you're in the middle of no where, then we have it!
The Blue Ridge Parkway is less than 20 minutes away and the New River equally close.
Looking Forward: July update. We are currently working on provided an all downhill mountain bike trail from 3600 to 3150ft. This path will be double wide for the most part and wide open at first to soak in the se view. Will update when completed! *a ride back up for your bike and yourself will be scheduled if requested

We use any downed wood on our property for our family to keep warm and to cut and split ourselves to sell to our guest. Rogue Trout Retreat is a brand new recreation destination, offering ~5 open acres of primitive camping and 700+ feet of private trout fishing that connects to the Crooked Creek Fee Fishing park and Wildlife Reserve. The creek is stocked with Rainbow Trout multiple times throughout the week between the months of April and October. Native and Brown Trout are also very commonly found in these waters.
The Wildlife Reserve "next door" offers opportunities for 5 miles of stocked trout fishing, 2 miles of wild trout fishing, 1800+ acres of hunting, hiking, horseback riding and wildlife watching. An absolutely stunning site. The surrounding mountains provide a majestic backdrop. It’s a peaceful, serene, and extremely private spot.
The pavilion is a unique amenity that made our stay a bit more “luxurious” than anticipated. However, the private access to the river is a ridiculously amazing perk that elevates Peak A View to a level that is unmatched.
The proximity to neighboring towns and hiking trails offered a nice diversity of activities.
Steve and Penny’s communication was top notch throughout. They were very helpful in getting us set up but more importantly, they are friendly, kind, and sincere hosts. We appreciate their generosity in sharing this magical place.
We will undoubtedly be returning to Peak A View as it checks every box, and then some!

I’ve stayed here twice and would come back again. It’s a quiet, well-kept spot with good views and plenty of space.
The host was easy to communicate with and helpful when needed. Access is straightforward overall, though the road in can be a bit rough in places—better suited for vehicles with some clearance.
Solid option if you’re looking for a simple, peaceful place to camp.

The view was exquisite! The site itself is large and spacious. Rocky in spots to put up tents and canopy’s slight challenge.
The trek up to the site is not for the faint at heart. Having an SUV is not sufficient, you need clearance and the AWD/FWD.

4x4 with clearance is a must if you don’t want to hike to site 5 (you don’t)! We will be back!

Absolutely loved staying here! Will definitely return one day. The site was right on the river and we were able to jump on in with our floats and fish off the bank. John was super helpful during our entire stay. Highly recommend the tent that John provides— it had a full sized memory foam mattress, couch and a ton of space to store all of our camping gear. It was my 9 year old daughter’s first time camping and she didn’t want to leave!

This is a great spot! The sound of the creek and the peaceful surroundings are hard to beat. You have a choice of two firepits, one of which is right next to the creek! The site is easy to access but offers plenty of privacy and quiet solitude. It is convenient to Grayson Highlands State Park, which offers excellent hiking and beautiful views. I would definitely camp here again. This is one of the best HipCamps I have visited so far!

Jon’s property, especially Site 5 where we stayed, is the pinnacle of camping. Stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and plenty of space to set up shop. I recommend purchasing the firewood bundle, that was super helpful and kept our fire going for two nights. I would absolutely stay again!
