Located less than a mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway, this little hayfield is nestled just a skip away from Mabry Mill (the most photographed spot on the parkway), Villa Appalachia (quant Italian style winery), Chateau Morrisette (larger tourist winery), Nancy's Fudge (a little candy factory and shop), and hiking trails of varying lengths with epic views (Black Ridge Trail and Rock Castle Gorge Trail).
Each of these is under 5 miles from our camp spot. Yet, if you are also hoping to hop out of your camper and WALK somewhere, there is a hike that leads you directly up to Chateau Morissette. Some of the property that this walk traverses does go through land that was logged. So, that section has lost a bit of its luster. That said, now you are able to look off in the distance to see the ridge that used to be hidden.
The property you will stay on is a hayfield that typically has a couple of cuttings each summer. There just happens to be a full hook up campsite located at the edge of the property that someone should be enjoying.
The property owner (my mom, who is in her mid 70s and doesn't internet so well) lives just down the road a smidge. She has graciously offered that we can rent this spot out and contribute the profits to her grandsons' college funds. While you may not see any of us at all, there is a chance you will meet some of the family (mom, myself, my husband or the boys), especially if you have any requests or hiccups.

174 Acres of forested land in the Draper, Virginia area, very convenient to both I-81 (2-1/2 miles south of) and I-77 (10 miles east of) with scattered clearings connected by over 2 miles of cleared roads throughout the property, which are perfect for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. The property includes a very small creek, several ravines, ridge lines and trails to explore. We frequently encounter deer, rabbits, squirrels, and the occasional turkey, black bear, coyotes and Bigfoot. The thing people seem to enjoy most is the privacy and and quiet that allows you to connect with nature. Each of the 3 sites is hundreds of yards apart. Note: there is no bathroom on the premises, however you can book a toilet tent as an extra. 4 Wheel Drive or All wheel drive are helpful during the winter months, or if there has been a lot of rain or snow/ice.
Things to watch out for are deer ticks and poison ivy. Campers are expected to leave the site neat and take all their trash with them.
We are located about 5 minutes from I-81 or 15 minutes from I-77 making it an easy place to stop when passing through on your way to other adventures. If you are coming on I-81 (North or South), use exit 89-A. Don't let Google maps take you to Frog Level Ct near the town of Pulaski (LOL). Nearby attractions include Appalachian Gem and Gold Mine on Route 100 (5 min), New River Trail State Park (10 min), Claytor Lake State Park (20 min) and the Town of Draper has a couple small town shops to explore including The Draper Mercantile and Trading Company and the newly opened Conery where you can get wonderful ice cream cones and more. Also, check out the Draper Mountain overlook on Rt 11, just 10 minutes from our HipCamp.
We love hosting campers and are happy to help make accommodations to help you have an enjoyable stay. We have 3 sites but only allow 2 to be in use at a time on the property. This insures that all guests continue to feel complete privacy from others and allows us to always have an alternate site available if campers want to change. Bring your dogs !
Available "Extras" include portable toilet setup, firewood, Woodshop class making a cutting board, Bigfoot sitings as well as various camping gear items and games. If there are other extra's you would like to see or something you forgot to bring please let us know and we will see what we can do.

Hi there. Here is a little rundown of everything we do at the mill….
So, as far as camping, there are two main options on either side of the river; the mill yard or primitive camping across the river. In the mill yard, we do festival style camping, meaning that there are no individual campsites per se, but rather a large grassy lawn near the mill and bathhouse with shared fire pits, picnic tables, charcoal grill, and sinks for water/dishes. We also have two platforms up in the woods that are good for a little more privacy and are completely shaded, but do require a small climb up the hill. The bathhouse has three restrooms and hot showers in each.
Across the river, there are several more primitive sites that are generally very private and offer great sounds coming from the river and waterfall, but no facilities. Most sites are car accessible, and a 5 minute walk back over to the mill (or a 1 minute drive). Lastly, our newest camping spot on the primitive side is a river front beach right by the dam with space for a several medium sized tents and a private fire pit. The beach is hike-in only (2-3 minutes along a mostly flat trail).
Our normal rate is $10 per person per night. Firewood is available for per wheelbarrow load. We accept cash, credit card, Venmo, Paypal, and crypto. We are also fairly flexible on check in/check out times, but just let us know if you’ll be arriving at odd hours. Dogs are generally welcome as long as they are kept on leash.
Here is a little rundown of tubing at the mill (May-October, weather permitting). We have two tubing options available. We have a short Fun Run that takes roughly 45 minutes, and cost $10 per person for as many rides as you’d like. The river bends sharply like a horseshoe in this section, so it makes everything accessible by foot traffic. It’s a 3 minute walk up the trail to the dam, put in and float 30-45 minutes (depending on water level), then a 5-10 minute walk back to the mill carrying your tube. There is also the longer Forks Run, which last 3-4 hours (~2.5 river miles), and costs $15. For this, we shuttle you up the river in a vehicle, and you float back to the top of the dam, then 3 minutes walking back to the mill. Most weekends, tubing starts at 11 am and the last Forks Shuttle is around 3 pm, with the Fun Run staying open till around 5. Also, with enough heads up, we can sometimes arrange for trips during the week.
Our tubes are required for each person floating for insurance and liability reasons, but you are welcome to bring your own cooler tubes to carry drinks and snacks. Technically, alcohol is not permitted on the river, but what is in your cooler is your business. Either way, please bring ALL trash out with you! Water shoes are recommended, and we have life jackets on request. Most of our tubes come with bottoms and back rests, but a few are open to the water. Most weekends, reservations are not required, but it does help tremendously if we know when you want to come and how many in your group.

My wife and I just finished camping 3 nights at the Retreat. I honestly am trying to figure out where to start. First, we’ve never had a deck at a campsite on Hipcamp. The secondary deck on your way down to the creek is such a precious spot. It has lights which were a nice touch. We had a coffee there every morning and sat at the table and played scrabble. The creek area I’ll call it such a romantic quiet spot. There is a fire pit as well as one right by the covered area where we parked the tru m. You can sit with a fire and enjoy the sound of the creek as a waterfall sits right by the fire pit. We truly loved the covered camping area. We have a roof top tent and it was so nice to have shade and electricity. The picnic was very helpful also. We have not one bad thing to say about this place. We had the whole property to ourselves and never saw another person the entire time. It is romantic and quiet and a perfect place for a getaway. Sarrah our host was very communicative and always got back to us quickly with any question. 10/10. 5 stars.

Set up was great and the peace and quiet of the property was exactly what we were looking for. The pictures of the deck and lower area by the creek do not do it justice. It was such a slice of heaven down there and we enjoyed letting our dogs off leash. They have put much work into the property and you can tell they care about keeping it looking well maintained but still letting the natural beauty be the star of the show. We ventured in to the Meadows of Dan small downtown area twice during our long weekend and visited a couple artisan shops, grabbed a coffee at their coffee shop and sweet treats from the candy factory/store. We are already planning our next trip in early fall and introducing some family to this sweet getaway. Can’t wait!!!

We had such a great weekend visiting the New River Trail and staying at this campsite! The view is just gorgeous. We saw tons of wildlife during our visit, including a bald eagle! The site was nice & level, and the hookups worked perfectly. The small grassy area off to the side of this site was helpful to us since we brought our 2 dogs along. It was also nice having easy access to the trail just down the road from the campground. I highly recommend this place, and look forward to staying here again!

Jim is an amazing host. Low key, friendly, and helpful. Sites 4-6 have the better view of New River, but are closer to the house and there is a lighted cross at night. Sites 1-3 are a bit lower elevation, but still stunning views. The sunsets and views of the stars and planets are worth the trip.
A ten minute walk down the mountain leads you to the New River Trail for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders.
Sites are wide. Jim provides trash and recycling on site. We had excellent 5G coverage too; better coverage than I get at home! We will definitely return!
Make sure to follow the yellow signs to the campsite and you will not go wrong. Also, we saw a mama bear and two cubs in a field about 1/2 mile away! Beyond amazing!!

Views are absolutely amazing and Jim is great. We swapped sites the first day when we got there and Jim was very accommodating. We stayed five nights and could have stayed another five. There are lots of day trips you can take from this spot - amazing state parks nearby. We will definitely be back in the future.

Beautiful place with all the peace and quiet you could want. The creek is a stress taker….just sitting on the upper deck listening to the water is so relaxing. Loved the covered awing….just made it better when it rained. We loved it and the are…just beautiful and well kept.

Fantastic site! Can’t beat the view and the full hookups! Beautiful sunsets, great location. I recommend unhooking your toad at the former Family Dollar or adjacent gas station before heading up the hill.

The view here is absolutely spectacular and definitely worth the trip—we drove six hours and weren’t disappointed. The campsites are a bit closer together than expected, so your experience can really depend on who your neighbors are. If you’ve got considerate folks nearby, it’s great; otherwise, it could take away from the overall vibe.
The biggest downside for me was the large cross that stays lit all night. It was pretty bright and made it difficult to sleep soundly. Aside from that, though, this is a beautiful spot and still well worth the visit.
