Shady Rest Campground is a quite peaceful property located within 2 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Firewood is plentiful in the campground and you just help yourself. The bathhouse is a little primitive but it has hot water, toilets and showers. We also have a covered shelter which offers an indoor fireplace you are welcome to use. The town of Sparta is 12 miles away and offers several restaurants and local shops. Brush Creek is only a mile from the campsite and trout fishing is popular there. Stone Mountain with its trails and water falls is a great day trip with only a 20 minute drive and the New River is a great place canoeing and kayaking.

We have traced this farm's history back to the 1750's when a mill was built on Reed Creek. There is a log home that we know that was built in 1840 still on the premises. The white farm house across from the camp sites was built in 1877. The fish hatchery that is still in operation today was built by the Federal Government in 1923. Learn more about this land: Camp site situated along 3 separate creeks connected by one large private 11 acre field. Tate Run/ Reed Creek/ Venrick Run. The farm house is across the road and the whole property comprises of 88 acres of woods and pasature. The farm house was built in 1877 and the Ranch currently operates with 30 head of cattle and a working trout hatchery. We have traced this farm lineage back to the 1750's when a mill was constructed at the meeting of Tate Run and Reed Creek by Swiss Immigrant Henry Grubb. Camping here along Reed Creek is peaceful and quiet. Located just a few short miles from town it is easy to get to ...but a long way from the world at large. So this is a great place to escape the hot humid Virginia summers!  We experience four true seasons, and the colors in the fall season are some of prettiest on the East Coast and perfect for leaf peeping!  We have deer, wild turkey, bear, chipmunks, raccoons, wild rabbits, Whip-poor-wills, and opossums on the property. Plus, the fireflies at night can be beautiful!  Plus, we've yet to see a mosquito!  You will be the only camper on the property, my RV is on site and is used as  guest quarters when I have company, but this is rare. There is no cell phone coverage and limited strength wifi, so unplug and relax!  The Camping Site is part of our mountainside property located in Long Hollow and sits on the edge of 7 acres of pasture, which leads to 7 acres of White Pine Forest you are welcome to use for walking, wildlife viewing, dog walking, etc.. It is conveniently located less than 2/10s a mile from Rt. 16, and 5 miles from I-81. Our neighbors are quiet but you may hear their donkey braying or chickens clucking. We ask that you do not disturb the neighbors or interact in any way with their animals. There is a Firepit and Picnic Table for your use. I try to keep a supply of firewood on hand which you are welcome to use, but if I run out you may have to get some wood elsewhere. You can scavenge fallen wood to burn.....

Come enjoy the beautiful landscape of the western mountains in Ashe County, NC on ninety acres of farmland and forest surrounded by mountain peaks, the New River and breathtaking sunsets. On the drive in, to the southeast you can see Peak Mountain for which the property was named. The mountain is part of the New River State Park and is known for its scenic river views and hiking trails. Two RV buddy campsites are available on the property. Campsite #1 was originally created for our personal use. Campsite #2, so our fellow camping buddies could join us. Although a short drive from our homes, the serenity of the property always makes us feel as if we’ve travelled many miles. Campsites are laid out in an ‘L’ shape which creates the perfect group camping experience. Guests can choose to camp alone or invite others. Campsite 1 and 2 are reserved together as one booking due to the close proximity of the sites. The property is secluded, but easily accessible. Campsites are full hookups which include water, sewer and 50 amp electric. Both sites can accommodate any size RV. They are gravel and level which makes getting set up easy. A 30 x 30 shelter with concrete floor, lights, picnic tables and trash bin is nearby, which is a great asset in any weather. A fire pit and chairs are a nice addition for evening enjoyment. Firewood is provided. WiFi is available. The area is pet friendly. Pets can be off leash, however, you might consider leashing your pet, as wildlife is frequently seen. If your furry friend is anything like our dogs, the chase is on when a deer, squirrel or turkey makes a sudden appearance! During your stay, take a 7/10 mile walk down to the New River. Pull up one of the chairs on the small covered deck overlooking the river, sit back and take in the sounds of the calming waters. Watch floaters, kayakers and canoe navigators pass by or enjoy your own floating, fishing and swimming. On the other side of the river is part of the New River State Park. A 15 minute drive will take you to downtown West Jefferson for restaurants and shopping. Visit the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce online or downtown for information on our county’s many attractions and events.

1 night at Rogue Trout Retreat

We accidentally went past the campground (it’s well marked and the location pin was perfect) but were treated with seeing deer cross the creek so that was a bonus. It’s close to the road but at night there’s little to no traffic and we didn’t really hear much going by. Very peaceful and it sounds like it’s going to have some nice additions in the future.

This site is beautiful and Rachel is super helpful! I brought my 14’ camper and the steps got banged up coming up the hill. The road up is fun to drive but my trailer didn’t have enough clearance. We will definitely be coming back!

This was our second time staying on Vinny and Donna's property. We loved it just as much as the first time and are sad we spent more time away hiking than hanging out around the campsite. My son loves being able to run around and play in the open as well as our pups. We will likely be back!

I wish we could’ve stayed longer! We were running behind schedule and arrived after dark, then had to leave before sunrise, so we didn’t get to take in the views. But the signs and string lights guiding us into the campground were such a welcoming sight after a long day on the road and pulling in so late. We’ll definitely be back to enjoy the campground properly!

rivers edge trail was beautiful! the site was clean, easy to find and the views were gorgeous. hookups were straight forward and full service, which we appreciated. there is a bit of junk around and there’s a house very close, so not private, but it looks like they’re still building the sites so we didn’t mind. we will definitely stay again!

Weekend Trip to Sleep under the stars overlooking the mountains by babbling stream

Awesome spot!! Ample room for the dog to run around. The proximity of the river access was such a cool surprise! The weather was rather warm for November, so we could utilize the river. Super private. The wildlife/cattle are cool. Incredible stars at night. We had a bit of rain and a sort of crazy windstorm one night, but felt super secure in the structure. This is an ideal beginners “primitive” camping spot.

We loved our stay on Tanner’s land! The South Mitchell River was flowing and we even saw a river otter on our last day. Additionally, there are plenty of places to camp and great places to set up a fire by the river. The area has a road near the camping sites, but the sites themselves were still very private and secluded. We saw very few cars go by and were the only campers there and next time we will just move down a little bit behind the hill. Also, this spot is dog friendly and our lab had a blast! We will definitely be back and would definitely recommend this spot to our friends and family.

Jeanie's place is now among our favorite Hipcamp spots. The premium site is incredibly well-maintained, private, and overlooks a lovely meadow. Our dog loved being able to explore the sights, sounds, and smells off-leash. Looking forward to our next visit!

From this camping spot near Elkin, if you drive N on Hwy 21 towards Sparta, take the South route on the parkway, the North route was extremely underwhelming.

This was the best camping experience I have had. The site is isolated to where it's very private, but also easily accessible to the surrounding areas. Excellent hosts, beautiful cabins, and gorgeous views.

We were there in October, The drive on the parkway is beautiful. One of the biggest attractions on the entire parkway is Mabry mill. We were disappointed with it being closed, the restaurant is too. Also disappointed with how the surrounding area around the mill needs updating and landscaping. The Mill pond needs to be cleaned out, it’s not what it used to be to be.

Got to Rocky Knob late due to a HipCamp failure, but still found finding an open site and registering easy to do. Sites are all well marked and large, room for 1 vehicle with a roof top tent as well as options for where to place a ground tent.
