We stay at Tanners every year. It’s a perfect place for us to disconnect from the real world and just enjoy nature and life. We will be back!

Maggots and yellow jackets.
Huge yellow jacket nest right at the tent platform that we had to move everything to avoid. Port-o-potty had maggots in it.

Our visit to Secluded Mitchel River Camping, was a pleasant sojourn by the stream. During our short stay at SMRC, my husband and I set up our tent near the edge of the river. The camping plot was well-maintained with a fire ring, picnic table, and access to simple toilet facility.
There are multiple options for pitching a tent on this property. Depending on the weather and the season, you’ll have your pick of shaded spots, or open, grassy areas. There are also many trees for hanging a hammock. Aside from the camping facilities, you will find an old barn structure that has lost its footing to time and the new growth of the surrounding forest.
If you’re looking for a quiet, peaceful Hipcamp with a pleasant country feel, SMRC is a nice choice.

We had an odd situation happen the evening we stayed there. I won’t go into details about it other than we felt unsafe until authorities arrived including the owner of the property.

Enjoyed our stay
Not bad, little dirt road by camp was somewhat busy. There is as a wedding party down the road, everyone drove slow and were nice. Would be nicer if the grass was cut! The fire pit by the creek was nice and Tanner had firewood there!! Very quiet at night and peaceful. Dogs ran with no leash and were very safe. Very close to the brewery in Elkin.

Nice quiet getaway spot!
Great weekend despite the rain! The site was clean, very level, and peaceful. Fire pit was nice and we would have loved to have used it but didn’t get the opportunity because of the rain. Even though we were just a short distance from town, it seemed we were far from everything. We hope to spend time here again on a warm and sunny weekend.

Not Maintained
This our 3rd time here and it is not being taken care of. Probably will never come back. The grass was anywhere from 6 to 12 inches tall no trimming at all.
This could be very nice if Tanner would pay more attention to the place and cut grass and trim it up and please change out the ripped up North Carolina Flag
My wife and I boondock all the time and all we ask for is a clean well maintained place.

R&R and Pets
Loved our stay at the creek, the view was beautiful and private. The fishing is great around the lower Mitchell and upper Mitchell River. Sandy spots for kids to play in, or if youre an adult kid and like looking for cool rocks like we did- this is your spot. Camp is about ten minutes from Carter falls trail- another beautiful spot. The site was clean and private. Not much traffic so you're left with the sounds of the creek and birds singing. The RV pad is very handy for my 35 foot Trailer. Tanner is responsive, kind and helpful.
If you want a good spot to stop for coffee, head to Dirty Joes in Elkin. If you need water theres a fill up station at walmart but if you're looking for fresh spring water there's a spring tap in town at the municiple park. (Told about it by a local, theres no signage). Great spot to let your four legged friend run free. Cell service for AT&T was nonexistent, if you walk down the drive to the road you might catch a bar to make a phone call- but we didnt mind being disconnected for the week. Thanks so much for the much needed retreat in nature.

Camping
Love how it was a close drive to some stores, about 9 minutes to Walmart and how it was on a little river. It was very nice to listen to the water as we fell asleep and woke up. Also loved that there were multiple fire pits and pre chopped wood. Would definitely return.

Over night stop
Really cool spot, perfect for stop over night( like we did ) or camp for a day or two. If you have a trailer / fifth wheel you must come in from the south or go past a half mile or so and turn around. We have a 31' tow trailer with F 350. Once through the gate we turned around in the big field and backed up to pull in the gravel camp spot the correct orientation. Really nice fire pit next to an awsum creek. No fuss , or tons of detailed rules like some other hip camps.....just sign up and show up !

Wonderfully secluded!
First, let me say that Tanner was a great communicator, with directions and instructions beforehand.
We arrived late, and it was easy to find, even in the dark. Pulling our little camper in to the spot was super easy. The grounds were well kept, with enough foliage left to feel nice and natural. The river is so close that we could hear it the whole time. There is a very close (20 yards) access point into the river, nice and beach sandy, so that we and our dog could get in and walk and play. She had so much fun - its so clear and clean!! We had her off-leash the entire 3 days with no problem at all (but she is a very good listener 😊).
There are 2 cabins on the property, far enough away that you can't see or hear any guests that may be there.
We ventured out to nearby Pilot Mt. State Park, as well as White Elephant Brewery in Mt. Airy. We truly loved our stay! Thank you for sharing your beautiful property with us!!

Could have been.....
Could have been a lot better. I had higher expectations looking at the pictures on the website. We were hoping for a quiet little get away. I asked in advance if the place was well kept or perhaps I should bring a weed eater. I was told it’s mowed every couple weeks, so I left the weed eater home. We got there and the place was terribly over grown (should have brought the weed eater). Fire wood was plentiful. Fire pit was disappointing. A large erosion area beside the fire pit meant camping further down away from the pit. Couldn’t see the parking pad from the over growth. There were about 3 different vehicles that drove through while we were there (interrupted a nice afternoon nap). We did a 3 day, Friday through Sunday. About 430 Saturday evening the guy shows up to mow the place. Having 2 dogs and kids. That was kind of upsetting. BUT.... the creek was beautiful. That’s about the only thing I can say was nice unfortunately =\ guess you can’t complain too much it was only $25 per night so 🤷🏼♂️ So it could have been....

This was our second stay here. We loved it just as much the second time! The dogs loved running around, the kids loved tubing in the creek. Nearby fishing and a hike to Carter Falls made great additions to the trip this time around. Tanner is very receptive and a great host. Wifi is non-existent on the site which was fine with us. We will be back!

The Real Deal
This is the real deal folks. Level parking pad, picnic table and restroom(porta-potty). The extras of a campground without the noisy neighbors. Serene wooded site with running Brook less than 100’ away. Go to sleep and wake up to sounds of the Brook. Spotty or no cell service but Dollar General and Walmart in 2-6miles.

We enjoyed our stay! Conveniently located. Each site is located along the brook, where I was able to catch some rainbow trout. The owners even gave us firewood on arrival.

Needs more attention, grass wasn’t cut, port-a potty is overgrown with trees, and poison ivy and poison oak growing on trees near fire pit.
Nice place just needs more upkeep so people will keep coming back.

Peaceful
The site was clean, with a great fire pit. It was so peaceful with the sounds of the river. Tanner was very responsive and was so helpful with our reservations. There was plenary of room for us to spread out with our 3 dogs who loved it. There was a road right along the site but there was very little traffic so it was no bother. We can’t wait to go back and explore the area.
