Come camp on the peaceful banks of the Cowpasture river. This is a great place to come to get away from the noise and just relax. The river depth along the property ranges from a few inches to 6ft. Most sites offer partial shade. Open field area for playing games. Large communal fire pit beside the river. We also have a communal Shelter that has two booth style tables under it.
Nearby places of interest including Falling Springs waterfall, Humpback Bridge, Lake Moomaw, Douthat State Park...all within less than an hours drive.
Only a few minutes from the closest town, incase you need food, supplies, fuel, etc.
Please note that not all cellular providers have service at this location. I know that Verizon does.

We are in a rural area, near a town, and on a lovely scenic road with no streetlight or stop lights. Near the Blue Ridge hills, Appalachian trail, Sherando Lake, several camp grounds, South River, many streams and some national forest.
We once had a large group of permaculture students that was very satisfied. We are developing in 2025 Lots of open here so campfires are ok.
We have space for a motorhome to 20 feet, with electric, and space for small RVs, tent, or trailer One place is great for a hammock between trees. If you have a group, room for a dozen small tent sites so contact us. We can work something out. Land is mostly level we are in a lovely recreational area.
We're fond of the musically inclined. So bring your instruments. we love nature enthusiasts, homesteaders, bushwhackers, bicyclists, bikers, scooter fans, road trippers...Come practice your camping or homesteading skills. Lot of trails nearby.

Lazy River Farm has so much to offer. Tents sites are in a wooded setting, on a beautiful hill, spread out for privacy. Not at the river. Camp sites also have fire rings with wood available for you to use. Campers are welcome to use any wood that's on the ground near or around your site. Camp sites can be accessed with a high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle or walk up the hill to your site. With easy access down to the river, by walking or driving, you can cool off in the beautiful Cow Pasture River.
Glamping in the Vardo Wagon is another option, with its close proximity to the river and cozy interior. The Gypsy Rose sleeps 2, but can sleep 2 additional guests with a tent.
Paddle boards and kayaks are available for free if you paddling near the farm. (Life jackets are limited but are required, so if you have one bring it) drop in a line to fish, or simply sit by the river and listen to the soft rapids.
Lazy River Farm is a working farm, with lovely Scottish Highland Cattle, pigs, chickens, horses and livestock guardian dogs.. Your welcome to come and pet the animals. Do not feed animals. Do not go into fields or stalls with any of them.

This is a great spot for mountain bikers and river lovers. So close to snowshoe and affordable makes this an easy decision. There is some traffic and noise from the road but it quiets down through the night and all you can hear is the trickle of the stream.

Primitive tent camping at some of its best! Views and an experience well worth the price. Be sure to bring a vehicle that can tackle some steep gravel roads, our front wheel drive SUV had a little trouble but we were able to get up to the second highest camping spot (momentum is your friend!)

We stayed for one night. We were booked at site 2, but Sydney let us move to site 1, which was larger and easier to level. The location is beautiful. Amazing views and very quiet. It’s a short drive to downtown Lexington, where we went for dinner. We were passing through, so didn’t do anything else. Sydney was quick to respond when we reached out. Would definitely stay again.

My husband, dog, and I had a great time car camping on Emmalyn's land. We arrived after dark, but it was still easy to navigate to the site. It is not too far from the highway, and we found it to be very quiet. It was a perfect stopover for our long drive!

I have nothing but wondeful things to say about this campground. It was clean, beautiful, accomodating and friendly. There was plenty of turn around space to maneuver our camper. The dumping station was well kept and easy to pull up to. The creek was beautiful along the back of the campground and we had wonderful conversations with the host and he was very inviting. There is a train that runs on the other side of the creek which we found to be exciting to watch and it was quiet so it did not wake us up. There is an enclosed dog walking area which was nice for our dogs. We will definitley be back.

We loved tent camping at Swedish Lilac. The babbling river, the sounds of the trains (not too loud and we loved it), and Fritz, the host, made our time memorable. The bathrooms were very clean and convenient. We will definitely be back!!

I had the place to myself and enjoyed staying cozy on the windy days. Was fun to watch prop planes fly low over the site. The walkability of this location is excellent. Just a very short walk to the path along the river. Keep going and reach exercise stations. A little further along, a wider park with trails and views. Playgrounds in several directions and plenty of places to walk the dog. Hosts are very friendly!

As a repeat guest for 3 years now, Mane Gait Equestrian Center is one of our top favorites on Hipcamp. It is so beautiful & peaceful . Wide open sky for star gazing, surrounded by beautiful mountains in the distance. Hook-up is easy for Elec & water. Maybe a little un-level in spots for larger RVS but no complaints here ! This last stay; we booked an extra night to go hiking locally, visit Lexington and local breweries ! Many excellent trails to choose from & Natural Bridge State Park is worth the visit too!

The good:
Friendly, helpful staff, pleasant out-of-the-way valley with a small river running along the edge of the campground. Convenient to Lexington and Fairfield and Buena Vista. Bathrooms are clean. Free firewood was offered during our stay.
The not as good:
No on site waste hookup, and the dump station is on the wrong side of the driveway. There is a train track just on the other side of the river that has freight trains at 2am, 4am, and 10am (at least during our stay). Some sites are awkwardly arranged. Bathrooms are not heated.
Overall:
Don't let the negatives discourage you from staying here, I mentioned them only so you will not be surprised. It is a peaceful campground despite the occasional freight train. Well away from major roads and light pollution, with a very friendly staff who make sure you get there by the best route and guide you to your site. Stayed during winter, two nights were below freezing, so occupancy was very low. I believe they have activities during the summer months.

Great camping spot at Site 1, it over looks the valley behind the property is gorgeous to wake up to. As the description says, you definitely need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get up the hill.
It takes someone spotting, but you can navigate through the trees to get your vehicle directly at the site. We arrived in the evening and in the dark it was a challenge.
There is a portapotty/outhouse as far as amenities, but no running water at the site. Bring water with you to avoid a long walk.
I would absolutely come back and stay again!

Went to sleep with gentle sounds of windchimes and woke beneath a tree slowly dropping yellow leaves.
Several restaurants and parks nearby. Also had the pleasure of hearing the local marching band rehearse . Recommend this HipCamp

Sites were clean and well maintained. Be aware this is VERY much a family site, kids will be screaming and dogs are barking constantly throughout the night which is not enforced by the rangers. It is beautiful though and these things are not the fault of the site.

I camped there a year ago on my way down the East Coast to Florida where I have met a group of hikers/explorers every year for some time now. I am planning my trip this year and will stay there again. It is not too far off Interstates 81 and 66 and a quick ride to Skyline Drive, whose campgrounds are not open this time of year. I was the only camper in the park when I retired for the night, another had shown up through the course of the night. No facilities were open due to the time of year, but the area was well maintained. I took a short hike on one of the area's many trails then got back on the road. Beautiful area. They accept Access Passes making it quite the bargain.

Total disrepair. So sad to see the fist CCC camp let go into shambles. $10.00 per night. No water, bathroom shut down and dump station closed. Shame on George Washington national forest and our terrible leaders.

Third year camping there! It is an awesome hidden jewel! Clean campground. Routine weekly emptying of porta potties and trash dumpster. Quiet campground. You can shower, fill water tanks and dump black/gray tanks 5 miles down the road at Grindstone Campground for $5!! The only suggestion I would have is if they could put a few loads of rock on the driveway in and up the hill into the campground. It is hard to get a larger trailer over the steeper grade at the end of the driveway to park!!!

One of my favorite campgrounds on Earth. We've been camping here on and off for 14 years (most recently October 2018 with our three little boys). There is something special about this campground. It's well kept, and the new ranger we met this fall was very kind in listening to our concerns about a potential tree-falling hazard. Can't wait until the weather breaks so we can make the trip back up the mountain!

great camping here only 9 sites so get here early. There are also some backpacking sites at the top of the trails with a few fire rings left by someone and great views for the early morning.

Camped here two nights: first night in main area near bathrooms, second night across the street in the overflow camping area. We actually preferred the second night more than the first! Even though there were lots of hikers during the day, in the evening it quieted down and was lovely. I recommend you start your hikes to early, right after breakfast before the day hikers start, and that you visit Wardensville and the Lost River Trading Post!

Have camped here several times--both in the campground, and backpacking in to the back country. Lots of hiking. Have seen others on horseback and seems ideal for that. Neat rock formations and Interesting historical cabin and information about the iron industry of 19th century. Good place for family tent camping.

Very nice private campsites with a nice quiet atmosphere. Felt like we were by ourselves even though the campground was full. Simple but clean bathhouse. Enjoyed hiking and hanging out at the lake.

Campsites have lots of space between sites if you like privacy. All campsites have a bear proof box so you don't have to store your coolers and food in the car. Trails up the mountain next to the lake provide nice views of the lake below.

Bolar Mountain is the place to go to unplug. With AT&T and Project Fi, we had no service, which was fantastic. Switch your phones to airplane mode to save your battery but still take pictures.
Bolar Mountain has four different loops you can pick your site from. The hosts are friendly and offer an outdoor movie night Saturday's at their amphitheater near the beach. Having camped other places, we really love the tranquility of Lake Moomaw. They have a beach but you can also swim from many of the camp sites. The hosts keep everything in excellent condition and also have a little camp store at their marina. The store sells one of everything, but might not always have something in stock.
Can't wait to return tomorrow!

Pleasantly surprised by this spot! It was an extremely windy night and we were able to choose a clear spot. All sites had packed, gravel tent spots, a fire pit and picnic table. Reliable, clean vault toilet and many hiking trails to choose from. Dogs loved this spot. It is first come, first serve, so plan accordingly!

There are ten tent sites in this campground, and they are all free! It is first come, first serve so if you are planning on coming in the summer, it might be wise to get there earlier before a weekend to make sure you snag a spot. There are also some sites across the road towards Tibbet Knob for overflow campers. There is currently no running water, so make sure that you bring your own! Vault toilets are available, and they are kept pretty clean. The campsite is directly between two hikes that are pretty popular with dayhikers, and that offer some gorgeous views. Highly recommend!!

For tent campers looking for a secluded spot away from RVs and stereos, Wolf Gap fits the bill. There are not a lot of services including water service, but there are vault toilets (be warned, the bathrooms don't really lock and there's only one toilet for each gender). The nine sites each have a single parking spot, a fire pit, picnic table, a giant stump for splitting wood if need be, and a very well-groomed flat tent area. The tent area is covered in packed crushed stone, so you will need a hammer to get your stakes in.
We arrived at 1 pm on a Saturday in late September and there were 3-4 sites still open, but it looked like some people packed up on the later side and there were spots later. Still, the campground filled completely.

A peaceful river borders one side of the campground and it's perfect for swimming and fishing. Our group had three children, including a toddler, so we opted to set up camp in the more open green space as you first enter the campground so they had space to run around. There are also several sites in a more secluded, forested area. All campsites have a picnic table and metal fire pit with a grill. The toilets are clean and the grounds well maintained. I enjoyed listening to the songs and calls of American goldfinches, pileated woodpeckers, bluejays, a wood thrush, and bald eagle. This spot is only a few miles from the Jefferson pools in Warm Springs which provide a relaxing soak in the historic warm mineral baths.

Huge fan of this spot. No potable water, but nice sites and a reliable bathroom. Worth noting that there are a couple dispersed backcountry campsites -- a 2-mile hike away near the Big Schloss peak, or a 1.5-mile hike at Tibbet Knob -- if you prefer roughing it.
