Learn more about this land: Texas Hill Brook camp site The Texas Hill Brook site is a flat, wooded campsite on Texas Hill Brook in Huntington. The campsite is roughly 10m x 30m (30' x 100'), large enough for several tents or a small camper/RV. It is accessed by a sloped 50m (about 150') gravel driveway. The narrowest part of the driveway is 2.6m (about 8.5 feet). There is a 3m x 3m (10' x 10') tent platform and a large picnic table. Firewood is provided. Near our home about 120m/400 feet away through the trees but relatively private. Within a short pedal or drive to some of the best mountain biking and hiking Vermont has to offer, 15 minutes to Richmond and Hinesburg, and just a half hour to Burlington. Electricity on site, primitive fire pit, but no other facilities, so ALL waste must be packed out. We have a bucket commode to loan if you don’t have your own.

This land is the home to Brad and Sarah, cats, gardens and a variety of wildlife. It is here that we run Roots School, a wilderness earth skills school, instructing adults and youth alike. The land has over a half a mile of river frontage and several streams, a beautiful varied forest, rambling topography, and plenty of wildlife. Many lessons in tracking may be found as whitetails, moose, black bear, fishers, bobcats, porcupine, coyotes, foxes, mink, ermine, snowshoe hare, wild turkey, and ruffled grouse, are seen and tracked. Often times we are also lucky enough to catch a hawk circling the pasture and to hear the barred owls calls in the darkness of night. This beautiful, historic property was one of the first to be settled in the early 1800s. The credited first settler in Charleston, Vermont; Abner Allyn and his family owned this farm for 100 years! Our family began restoring the farmhouse as well as beginning a small regenerative farming operation in 2022. Currently we have a small flock of broilers and layers, turkeys, ducks and guineas. Our birds are fed an organic feed local to Vermont and are pasture raised. Freya an Luna are the Great Pyrenees' about the farm. They protect the flocks from predators. They are working dogs and have access to the entire property. For this-and other reasons, we discourage bringing pets to the farm. A sweet brook meanders through the property which all sites have access to as well as stunning views of bald mountain. Lovely farm views throughout the seasons. Multiple trails for exploring can be found on and off farm. Trail heads to multiple mountains are within a few minutes of campsites. Lake Willoughby is a short 4 miles away, 7 miles to Island Pond, as well as endless hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing and more.

My land is easily accessible by main road, has ample parking, and yet cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, wildlife, fireflies and peepers are just outside the door. In the summer season, several organic farmstands and local picturesque swimming holes range between 5-15 minutes away. Autumn's glorious show is on display everywhere you look. Winter offers easy access to groomed VAST trails in the field behind the house and studio. Hopkins Center, AVA Gallery, the Lebanon Opera House, Northern Stage, and a wide array of restaurants are within 20 minutes. The Lyme bridge is now open, so there are more restaurants, trails, activities and the Dartmouth Skiway! Despite the proximity to town and even to my home, the simple studio space is serene in its sumac baby forest. The space is one of a kind, with a giant salvaged chapel window, cathedral ceilings, a candelabra, a clawfoot tub, a quirky outhouse, on-demand hot water, electricity and wifi. The site lists that it sleeps 4? But three is more realistic, and I cannot seem to change it. I loved my little snowy weekend here! The heated hive was lovely and warm, and Sandy was so kind. Her land is so very pretty, and I can't wait to see it in bloom again soon! Weekend Trip to Mead Hill at Mount Cabot Maple

We had such a great time at the yurt and exploring the property with our two dogs! Morgan did a great job of showing us everything we needed to know for our stay. The yurt itself is absolutely beautiful and truly makes you feel like you’re sleeping in nature. The location that they chose to build the yurt provides an amazing view of the mountains right out the front window. We opted to use the wood-fired hot tub while we were there and it was a fantastic experience. Although the wood stove was out of commission during our stay, the space heaters that were provided were more than enough to keep the yurt toasty, even during the cold late November nights. We would gladly come back again!

We stayed in the yurt for a weekend and loved it! Bed was comfy and thought the woodstove wasn't working, the space heater kept us cozy. Morgan and Rush were excellent hosts, answered all our questions graciously and made us very welcome. The woodfired hot tub was glorious. Hope we can visit again someday!

Weekend Trip to Burke Backyard Bell Tent

I enjoyed my stay at the Burke Backyard Bell Tent! I met Deste briefly and she was friendly. The town of East Burke is only a few minutes away and there was super easy access to lots of incredible mountain biking. While you have to walk from the driveway past the house to get to the tent, once you are there it feels pretty private and spacious. It was clean and there were some cute solar lights. The only thing I would improve is the bathroom situation, which is a pretty simple Boxio set up which I didn't find the most comfortable.

1 night at Base Camp (NEW TO HIPCAMP!)

The property here was amazing to be at. I was part of a 4.person group bikepacking through Vermont and came across this as an option for reprieve during a to be rainy night. The main lodge was very homey, communal, and clean. A huge kitchen and plenty of seating/hang out area for folks to catch up and chat. Honestly we would have loved to stay longer and get to know even more about the place as it seemed to have some good history and current operations to it.

Weekend Trip to Burke Backyard Bell Tent

It was a really nice place to discover in the beautiful little town of Burke. We've been there in the middle of a bikepacking trip and the place was perfect. A big wooden base with a huge bell tent on it. We really appreciated the jug of water and the composting toilet, plus a table with two chairs. The place was so quiet, in a huge backyard in a field, surrounding by woods. There's a fireplace with chairs also and the wood is included. I would recommend this place for everyone who want to stay in Burke and have an amazing stay !

2 nights at Halfpipe Farm

It was a good blend of having convenience, glamping, beauty, and quaintness. While the upstairs bed is comfortable, it does sit on the loft wood itself. One word of caution and to be prepared, the ladder that goes up to the loft is narrow and quite steep. There's also a bed on the main level, which I actually found more convenient for those of us who have to pee in the middle of the night. 😊 Overall it was a comfortable and enjoyable stay. I would recommend it for anyone that wants a down to earth glamping experience.

HOWL is at the bas of Camel's Hump! It's an easy drive to the trailhead and one heck of a hike up. Totally worth it! There are equally cozy or adventurous options all around HOWL.

HOWL is a lovely place to stay! The hosts were welcoming and warm, opened their home as if I was an old friend and made sure that I felt comfy and ready to enjoy the beautiful surrounds. Weekend Trip to Broadfork Farmstead

I really enjoyed staying on the bus—it was such a unique experience! I was grateful it was available for a last-minute booking that same night. Carol’s communication and responsiveness were excellent, making check-in smooth even with my late-night arrival. The bus itself was cozy and charming, set right on the farm with a clean outhouse just steps away, equipped with a motion light for nighttime use. Inside, the space was thoughtfully arranged with a small table, chairs, two sofa beds, and foldable mattresses. The bed was surprisingly comfortable, and each window had blinds to block out light. It was a cold night, but I came prepared with sleeping bags, extra blankets, and heating pads. Carol also offers a space heater as an add-on, which I’d recommend during cooler seasons! A pleasant surprise was the power bar which was so useful for charging my devices and the bus also had reliable Wi-Fi! I only stayed one night but wish I’d had more time to explore the farm, there were adorable animals on my way out! I also wish I’d tried the breakfast add-ons as they looked delicious. Overall, it was a memorable stay that I’d definitely recommend. I got to tell all my friends that I slept on a bus and had a great story to tell! Thanks Carol :)

I had a wonderful two night stay on The Bus. My friend joined me the first night, but had to get back to work, so my second night was solo. We both found the accommodation funky and comfortable. As a farm girl, myself, I always love to be around piglets, chickens, dogs, cows… Carol was a very warm, gracious hostess, eager to share her insights on local attractions. Her breakfasts and cheese plate displayed impressive attention to detail, using superb local ingredients and so artfully arranged, include cloth napkins tucked into baskets. I hope I am able to return next year, and have already recommended her place and the area to friends looking for a satisfying roaming destination.
