We came to this magical place to found a self-reliant, homesteading eco-community when I retired from corporate life in 2006. It's called the Village on Sewanee Creek, named for the creek 800 feet below the bluff where we are located.
I traveled the world as a senior executive for Baskin-Robbins, Dunkin' Donuts, Papa Johns, Blockbuster, 7-Eleven and other retail franchises, making the world safe for Pizza, Ice Cream, Pancakes Video Rentals and American convenience. And I was ready for something more fufilling. I scouted for a place of exquisite natural beauty and I found it here. I bought way too much land just before the real estate bust and learned how to turn a nice fortune into a very small one.
I faced challenges and had lots of fun. Now I want to share our experience.

Learn more about this land:You’ll cross the covered bridge (clearance 11’6” ) as you enter our farm, a 73 acre small family farm, nestled in the Buffalo Valley of Northeast TN, and featuring a down home country atmosphere. What makes our farm special are all of the unique extras: a working log cabin blacksmith shop, log cabin art gallery, certified commercial kitchen, lots of watchable wildlife, and walking trails. We have a one acre wildlife pond and a smaller pond fed by springs and Buffalo Creek, which runs through the farm. Running Water Creek is a unique, fully off grid campground just 20 minutes to downtown Chattanooga. We have 80+ campsites spread out over 120 acres. Most of the roads are accessible in any small car, but some roads require 4x4 (they're marked with a sign). We have a bath house with toilets, showers, and sinks and even offer hot water! Our well and cabins are all solar-powered as we are not on the electric grid.
Some info about the property:
-we DO NOT have water or power hookups
-we have gravel roads with a 5 MPH speed limit on the property (if you drive too fast the roads will seem rough)
-we are right next to a highway and train tracks so there will be some noise (some days are better than others and we have no way of predicting how many trains will/will not go by)
-none of our campsites have picnic tables (please plan accordingly)
-most campsites have fire rings built, but if you choose a site without one you need to build your own

Taylor is very quick to answer texts, everything was as described. Cute camping cabin. Porta potty was clean and not scary at all, our dogs loved the room to roam, the creek, and the pond. Site is central to the mountains and Knoxville, loads of hiking and lake access nearby, town is just minutes away with all the trappings.

Everything is a close walk, the creek/lake is pretty central to everything and it has plenty of fish. Although the fish seem to only bite for meat not artificial bait. Once you have meat on the hook you can see them show up in groups for it.
All the animals were friendly, or at least curious about us and gentle with our toddler.
July makes it too hot and too mosquito-ee to get out and enjoy the trails but the land was beautiful and have no cell service preventing those never ending work calls and emails was amazing as well.

Weekend Trip to Beech Hollow Hideout
It felt magical from the moment I turned in the driveway. I loved all the big rocks, the creek, the sculptures, and so much green everywhere… William and his animal friends were very welcoming and made it easy to find the hut on the hill. After the extremely challenging sweaty hike up (par for the course in a TN July!), I arrived at what felt like a fairytale cottage in the glen. It was beautiful! The perfect place to reset your nervous system and take several deep breaths… things I would recommend: pack light, take a good walking stick, guard yourself against chiggers if you plan to sit on the ground or venture into the wild areas in summer, and take a headlamp for seeing better inside the cabin and outside at night. I might suggest you take a solar shower bag. I didn’t have one, and it would’ve been wonderful to rinse off once or twice.
There is a giant glass jug of drinking water there, so you don't need to carry the extra weight of water up the hill.
Greet the trees when you get there; I’m pretty sure they appreciate it. And thank them when you leave. It’s a nice way to bookend your experience.
William is a great steward of the land, and you will feel very safe and cozy there. Rest well!

We really liked the cabin and its rustic yet contemporary feel. However, it seems like it wasn’t intended for use during Tennessee summers where it can be 80+ degrees inside at night. There was a propane heater which I imagine would make this a really cozy place in colder months but obviously we didn’t need it for our stay. The fans & power bank that the host provides plus having the windows opened helped but it was still uncomfortable.

This is our second visit, and we truly appreciate how Janice has created a warm and welcoming environment that is also dog-friendly. Finding spots that welcome us and our furry friends can be tough, so we’re grateful for this special place. Luke’s Cabin is cozy and comfortable, equipped with everything you might need. We also love that here, you can disconnect and enjoy the tranquility without Wi-Fi. It’s a perfect home base for exploring the beautiful Smokey Mountains and nearby attractions, especially Dollywood, which is just about a 30-minute drive away. Whether you want to fill your days with adventures or simply relax by the lake or fire pit and spend time with the animals, there’s plenty to enjoy. Weekend Trip to The Falls at Sewanee Creek
Wonderful place to stay! Can hear waterfall from place. Inside is nice and comfy, with place to eat and sleep. Was so good, we plan to be back at another unique rental!

2 nights at Hawks Nest
My two kids and I had a wonderful stay at Hawks Nest. If you want to get away and have a bit of time surrounded by wild, expansive TN then look no further. Dan and his family were very welcoming. I’m so thankful to have drafted this little retreat.

Weekend Trip to The Ole Place
We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this cabin in Chattanooga! The location was perfect peaceful and tucked away in nature, yet close enough to explore the city. The cabin itself was incredibly cozy, clean, and well-equipped with everything we needed. Waking up to the beautiful views was the best part of our trip. The host was also super responsive and helpful. Can’t wait to come back

With kids
The cabin was a great location for anyone wanting to stay away from busy Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area. With small children we love to tent camp, but traveling a long ways doesn’t always work for a tent- the cabin was perfect for us! We loved the cozy space and the hosts were very welcoming and helpful! We loved exploring the campground and enjoying the views.
