We came to this magical place to found a self-reliant, homesteading eco-community when I retired from corporate life in 2006. It's called the Village on Sewanee Creek, named for the creek 800 feet below the bluff where we are located.
I traveled the world as a senior executive for Baskin-Robbins, Dunkin' Donuts, Papa Johns, Blockbuster, 7-Eleven and other retail franchises, making the world safe for Pizza, Ice Cream, Pancakes Video Rentals and American convenience. And I was ready for something more fufilling. I scouted for a place of exquisite natural beauty and I found it here. I bought way too much land just before the real estate bust and learned how to turn a nice fortune into a very small one.
I faced challenges and had lots of fun. Now I want to share our experience.

Running Water Creek is a unique, fully off grid campground just 20 minutes to downtown Chattanooga. We have 80+ campsites spread out over 120 acres. Most of the roads are accessible in any small car, but some roads require 4x4 (they're marked with a sign). We have a bath house with toilets, showers, and sinks and even offer hot water! Our well and cabins are all solar-powered as we are not on the electric grid.
Some info about the property:
-we DO NOT have water or power hookups
-we have gravel roads with a 5 MPH speed limit on the property (if you drive too fast the roads will seem rough)
-we are right next to a highway and train tracks so there will be some noise (some days are better than others and we have no way of predicting how many trains will/will not go by)
-none of our campsites have picnic tables (please plan accordingly)
-most campsites have fire rings built, but if you choose a site without one you need to build your own

Learn more about this land:You’ll cross the covered bridge (clearance 11’6” ) as you enter our farm, a 73 acre small family farm, nestled in the Buffalo Valley of Northeast TN, and featuring a down home country atmosphere. What makes our farm special are all of the unique extras: a working log cabin blacksmith shop, log cabin art gallery, certified commercial kitchen, lots of watchable wildlife, and walking trails. We have a one acre wildlife pond and a smaller pond fed by springs and Buffalo Creek, which runs through the farm. Weekend Trip to Shoestring Creek Campground
We had quite an adventure staying at Rhonda‘s Hipcamp. Rhonda and her Mom are such lovely people! When we first arrived to our cabin, it appeared a mouse had gone in and made a little mess; which happens! That being said, they were very accommodating in giving us new blankets and offering to move us somewhere else. We chose to stay where we were and just cleaned up a bit. This site is incredibly private and exactly what we were hoping for. Though it was pouring rain most of our stay, we had one nice night and got to use the fire pit set up outside which was really gorgeous. There was also a lot of private road to get your steps in. We had to leave a day early due to my puppy not feeling so well and we were offered to come back for a free night if we were ever coming back around. I cannot say enough nice things about Rhonda and her Mom who is currently running the shop. Would definitely recommend staying at one of their many sites if you get the chance!

The mountain views were absolutely extraordinary, the bathrooms were impeccably clean, and the kitchen and gathering areas were fully stocked with everything we needed. The cabin was a great location for anyone wanting to stay away from busy Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area. With small children we love to tent camp, but traveling a long ways doesn’t always work for a tent- the cabin was perfect for us! First I would highly recommend. The Pat and her son were most gracious. They provided a great tour of their place. Pat was baking goods for farmers market and Robin showed his blacksmith operation. The gallery where we stayed stood out with his handi work. I do plan on returning with my mini camper. I have stayed in various hipcamp sites, this one is tops. I really enjoyed the history of this farm place. The goats, buffalo and peacocks were an added feature. Wish I cold have stayed longer.

Such a wonderful place to stay while enjoying a small slice of the AT. The kitchen has everything one needs to prep meals and two fridge/freezers. The bath house was much appreciated. Everyone we met was so friendly. It was lovely to wake up to see the trees and mountains. Loved the trails on the property, especially the lookout point. If I’m ever back in this area, this is where I’ll stay.

This place is exactly what I needed to recharge in nature. I stayed there to take a break from the high-stress period of life I am going through. It was the best decision I made. The land is so beautiful. Staying at and around the hut for 24 hours was like being hugged the whole time. There is a beautiful trail around the land that was stunning, the view of the hills was great, and seeing signs of spring was so joyful.
I had beautiful conversations with William. He showed me around his art gallery and all the beautiful pieces he has made. It was truly inspirational to see how living a simple life is so rewarding and motivated me to continue pursing living a simple life that’s in tune with nature.
No matter how much I will describe my stay, one needs to experience this land and camp for themselves to see the beauty, magic, and whimsy it has to offer.
