Pitch your tent at one of our walk-In forest campsites on 60 acres along Prairie Creek in Rice County, MN. Explore the creeks, trails, forest, our enormous granite "split rock" erratic, a 60 acre county park featuring waterfalls and trails, including a single track mountain bike trail. That's 120 acres of exploring right outside your tent; our campground truly offers a large amount of recreation right on site with remote forest, many trails, plus waterfalls and creeks to enjoy.
Thank you for a great 2025 camping season! We hosted more Hipcampers than any year before and are excited to have been honored again with a Best in Minnesota award. Every year we have more and more returning campers; we are honored that you make us part of your memories.
Big Woods State Park is less than 2 miles away. Faribault is 8 miles and Northfield is 9 miles from our driveway; they offer dining, boutiques, and all other amenities. Nerstrand is 4.5 miles east and has a gas station and a fantastic meat market. Numerous Cannon River put-ins are within 10 miles.
We do not have firewood available at the campground; please plan ahead to bring firewood with you.
A map of the land is in the photos and shows locations of sites, parking and more. All Sites are Walk-In! We have a cart you may use to haul gear in.
Vehicles: Our main parking area by sites 1, 2, & 3 is easily accessible. The road to the secondary parking area beside our hilltop site 4 is up an adventurous gravel road (but is very accessible).
This campground is managed by Stephen and Molly on land owned by them and their father Ted. In 1961, Stephen's grandparents bought this farm. In addition to farming they also operated a trail riding stable here. Over the years, the arable land has been sold, but we retained the wooded areas which are twice crossed by creeks. About 30 years ago, a 60 acre county park bordering the south and west sides of our land was created.
We are very excited to host campers as a way to preserve and share this beautiful property.

Welcome ; Located in southeast Minnesota's Driftless region of hills, valleys, fields and forests, we are a grass based working dairy farm with over 100 acres of woodland,
including an extensive trail system and campsites in our wooded acres. What makes this woodland special is it's quiet, secluded setting and over 6 miles of hiking / skiing trails.
Our farmstead sits three quarter of a mile off the paved county highway on our well maintained gravel driveway.
Each of our campsites are secluded from the others with their own sawdust compost toilets, picnic tables, fireplaces, and firewood.
Two of our sites require 4WD with a minimum of 6 inches ground clearance
to access, and two are accessible with 2WD.
If you do not have 4WD we can help transport your gear while you enjoy the walk in.
There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. At night it is common for owls to visit the campsite area to say hello, and coyotes talking in the distance. The winding trails through 100 acres of woodland offer a variety of woodland habitats, from Old growth Maple to mixed hardwood, to dense brush, to the edges of open pastureland. Bring your fat bike or mountain bike for an enjoyable ride.
For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing
or snowshoeing / hiking
on the property. However the Rock Bottom Cabin is our only heated and insulated site and is available for winter booking. Winter access is walk in only with snow on the ground or in the forecast. We can help transport gear.
This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm and guided tours of the dairy and cattle are available when scheduling allows.
Children 12 and younger are free at our campsites.
No need to be counted as guests , but please let us know when requesting to book.
We do not allow non-booked visitors to our campsites due to the secluded, remote location, and accessibility.

cherries) using sustainable and organic practices because health and wellness matter to them! They are still in the process of improving their property. Many of the building on the property were in poor condition, including the old barn foundation which is now one of Dan and Danielle favorite places to keep cool in the summer. After they had excavated all the debris (which took years) they were able to transform it with gardens and fire pit for all to enjoy. They love sharing what they have been blessed with! Many folks that have visited our place refer to it as 'country living in the city'.
We are so blessed to live in this little piece of serenity just inside the city limits of Duluth.
Our home was once an abandoned house that sat for years until a friend mentioned to us that it might be going up for sale. We loved the location and rolled up our sleeves. Twenty years later we still marvel at the beauty around us and can hardly believe that we LIVE here!
Just down the road is a trout stream and beyond that was a popular farm that attracted many folks to this neighborhood for hay rides and sleigh rides. The farm has since retired its horses and closed its doors to make room for new homes, but memories live on in the beauty of the open fields. I often imagine the sound of horses and sleigh bells and people singing carols and then warming up around a toasty fire sipping hot cocoa. Some of those memories live on right here at Balsam Ridge (minus the horses). Over the years many groups of folks have enjoyed a sense of community in these back woods no matter the season. Campfires, kids catching frogs, neighborhood campouts, snow picnics, hair-raising toboggan runs, family campouts, spiritual silent retreats, a take-your-breath-away giant swing, and some tales too daring to mention are all part of the fun.
This is why we do what we do. We've been given much, and love to give back. It just wouldn't seem right to keep all this good to ourselves.

Enjoy 10 acres shared between 2 sites! The two campsites are large and can accommodate approximately 6 tents comfortably at each. If more is needed let us know we have room and can accommodate. There is a shared bathroom/changing room and trash/recycling between the sites. There is a hand pump well left of the last gate if you need to fill up on drinking water just make sure you have a container for it. Site includes a picnic table and firepit and many acres with downed trees to salvage. Pre-purchased firewood can be picked up at the farm stand, you can also purchase more there if needed. This area includes a back pasture and woods with trails throughout for walking/mountain biking. There are many horse trails in the area, if you want to bring your horses that is fine as long as you bring containment for them and clear it with us first. We are approximately 1 mile from a rum river access. There are multiple river trip options from our property. We are also 3 mins from Lake George and the Rum River Regional Park for swimming, biking, fishing, boating, and more paddling. There is a Bills gas n grocery as well as a G-will liquors less than a minute from the property. The Ponds golf course is about 4 mins away as well. If you are looking to hit downtown Anoka that is a straight shot and approx 12 mins away. This site is on an active hobby farm that has dogs, cats, horses, chickens, goats, and multiple gardens. We have a farm stand by the road where we sell items such as fresh roasted coffee, eggs, BBQ sauce, pickles, maple syrup, hot sauce, and more! We are very pet friendly and like to meet new furry faces, so feel free to bring them along!

Our professionally designed 18-hole disc golf course winds through the woods and along the river. Overnight guests can play any time during their stay, and the course is also open to the public on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Our insulated domes are designed for quiet, comfortable stays and are ideal for couples. Each includes a king bed, wood stove (firewood provided), electric heat, AC in the summer season, mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker, outdoor seating, fire ring, and private river access. Included wood-fired, coil thermosiphon hot tubs are the ultimate camping luxury during the summer season.
Private Bathroom & Shower: Each dome comes with its own private bathroom and shower, just for your party. It's in the main building, a short walk from the domes.
Pets: Leashed pets are welcome everywhere outside on the property, but they can't stay inside the domes.
Winter Season (Oct 19 – May 1)
The domes stay open all year! During the winter season the wood-fired hot tubs are out of service (we shut them off once nights drop below freezing), and the rate is $179 a night with a 1-night minimum. The wood stove keeps things cozy, and firewood is provided. Plan to keep the fire going overnight on the coldest nights.
Rustic Campsites
Walk-in tent sites offer a simple, peaceful way to experience the land. The property includes one Riverside Group Site (up to four tents) and four individual tent sites along the river. Sites are bring-your-own-gear. A porta potty serves the campsite area.
Walk-In Access: All campsites are walk-in only, with no vehicles past the main lot. Park there and use one of our carts to haul your gear. The trail can be muddy or uneven after rain, so plan on two trips if you're bringing a lot.
Water: The campsites don't have water or electrical hookups. You can fill up with drinking water at the main building by the parking lot, so bring a jug or refillable bottles to carry back to your site.
Optional add-on: shared private bathroom & shower access in the main building (limited availability, advance purchase required).

We have a lovely piece of property to come enjoy a getaway at. We enjoy all of the peace and quiet around here. The night sky is unbeatable in my eyes. We have a small hobby farm with lots of very tame animals. We have 42 acres to roams with lots of trails within the woods that are filled with aged oak trees and many young maple trees. Our property is filled with lots of wild flowers and wildlife.
We are locate 3 miles from the root river if you enjoy fishing or going for a float down the river. There are two caves in our area that are a must see while you are visiting. I you like to hike there is a state park 14 minutes from us that have many miles of hiking trails and horse trails.
If you are more the small town strolling type of person we have lots of small towns around us that are filled with shops and lots of great food! There is a large system of bike trails in our area that make a very fun way to check out some of the small towns.
If you have a family with kids we have a lot of fun activities you can do with your kids, like spending time with the goats and chickens, playing on our playground, or taking a nice walk through the woods looking for fossils!

The site is next to the garage, so it's not completely "out in nature," but it's easy to back into using my driveway. There are also fewer bugs since it's not out in the "back 40." :)
The Camping Spot: For the purists who want to pitch a tent right on the ground. Fall asleep to the rustle of the leaves and wake up surrounded by clover and wildflowers. You can choose almost anywhere on my 5 acres! No amenities are available.
Things to Know & Ground Rules
A Note on Pets: I love animals, but because my elderly dog and chickens rule the roost and roam freely, all guest pets must be kept on a leash at all times for everyone's safety. No exceptions.
The Landscape: Because I don't meticulously mow or maintain traditional landscaping, the ground can be uneven and grasses may be tall. Wear appropriate footwear, bring insect protection, and embrace the wild!

Once the site of the historic V.J. Fetzner Brewery from the late 19th Century. The land is now used as a hobby farm, honey bee sanctuary and nursery to a unique tree species normally not found in Southeastern Minnesota.
Remnants of the brewery are still visible. Foundation walls outline the massive structure of the brewery. Nestled in the center of the foundation is the entrance to
the sixty-seven foot deep cave that
once held barrels of beer and can be accessed by canoe only.
Hops have been located on the property and are believed to be ancestors of those raised to make the beer once stored in the cave. The pond that provides access to the cave was dug out in the early 1990's to create a fish out for the Spring Falls Trout Farm that used to exist across the highway. Some of the original brood stock still exist and continue to naturally stock the pond. It is not uncommon to see fish that are five to ten pounds in size. We do not allow fishing from our pond.
The residents house is built to scale to the original brew master's house. While the house is only twenty-four years old it looks as though you have taken a step back in time. The name Shady Rest was given to the house by
the Brew Master's wife.
We thought it was appropriate to keep the name alive.
Shady Rest Acres is comprised of twenty-three acres of beautiful woodlands and pasture that are protected forever
in the
Minnesota Land Trust. The pasture is home to Scottish Highlander cows, two miniature donkeys, five sheep, four goats, honey bees and a flock of chickens. Scottish Highlanders
were selected for both their grazing and browsing abilities. They are very docile and make excellent pasture mates to the smaller species sharing the pasture. The cows are excellent forest managers. They
clear out invasive species such as Honey Suckle, Buckthorn, and Barberry which can often be difficult to manage. A guided tour with the host can be taken to meet the pasture animals.
The forest is comprised of many tree species. Some are unique in that they normally do not grow in this region of Minnesota. The yellow birch is a species normally found in Northern Minnesota. It's bark is golden in color and glistens when the sun hits it just right. We have a cluster of several yellow birch including one that is so big that the bark no longer looks golden but instead is grey and very rough. Years ago the largest of these trees made excellent wood for turning bowls. Blue Beech (musclewood) can also be found on the property. As the name indicates the bark is shaped like muscles. Songbirds and some other species will use different parts of the tree as a food source. Towering white pines also speckle the landscape. Mother pine requires at least two humans arm lengths to encircle the whole tree. She is a favorite resting spot for the barred owl. There is oak, elm, maple, ceders, poplars and numerous other species.
Honey bees are an integral part of the landscape. We partnered with a friend and
started raising honey bees two years ago in order to do our part to keep pollinators thriving.
Their hives are located in the pasture where it has the perfect amount of early morning sun to get them moving and afternoon shade to balance out the summer heat. It is not uncommon to see them pollinating garden plants, trees and wild flowers around the property. One of their favorite feeding spots is the acre and a half prairie which offers a range of plants including big blue stem, wild indigo and baby blue stem, to name a few. Not only are honey bees essential to the food chain but they also provide a very enriching experience when they are observed moving about their hives. There is nothing more relaxing and fascinating than watching these amazing creatures.

The 80-acre property is carved out of a Norway pine plantation. Sites are approximately 10,000 square ft. in size with about 50 ft. of trees between each site for semi-privacy. We have tried to maintain a balance of nature while making the sites as RV friendly as possible. Want to explore the area? Just a few miles away is the 49-mile multi-use Heartland Trail, where you can enjoy a quiet walk, run, or bike ride through a paved, wooded, level trail. Within ten miles are plentiful restaurants and stores in Park Rapids, Dorset, and Nevis. There are often music festivals throughout the summer, and several of the restaurants and bars host live music, some of which are played by Debbie, one of your two hosts! You can even take a 30-mile drive to Itasca State Park, home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River, where you can walk right across the headwaters!

Parking is provided for 1 vehicle. No trailers (sorry). Check-in is an easy self serve process for your convenience. Please note the parking and outhouse is near the owner's residence and there is 1 rental cabin that may be sharing the parking area and outhouse.
Additional notes to consider: During certain times of the year, particularly fall, it is also possible to hear occasional hunting from other large properties around the lake, but be assured there is no hunting on our property or our direct neighbors and you are located securely in the center of our 15.5 acres.

Weekend Trip to Balsam Ridge Retreat
My wife and I decided to take an impromptu trip up to Duluth to see the fall colors and do some hiking along the north shore. There weren’t many spots left anywhere apart from one of the sites here. Little did we know at the time of booking that this is one of the best sites we could have asked for and one of the best camping experiences we’ve both had. There is so much amazing thought, care, and intention put into making everyone’s experience here so amazing. That included ours. Linda and Chris are simply spectacular hosts and brought such pleasant warmth, kindness, and hospitality to our time at their retreat over the weekend. I could not recommend this place more. We hope to come back many more times.

The stuga continues to be a highlight for my sisters and I! We absolutely love coming every fall. We had a rainy day but the cabin is so cozy we weren’t phased in the slightest. Lots of games and reading in the rocking chair made it dreamy like every other year. A new highlight was the owl we have been hearing every year we visit was spotted watching us walk on the trail. Thank you Linda and Chris for making us feel so welcome every year.

2 nights at Balsam Ridge Retreat
Linda and Chris are my favorite hosts that I've ever had :) I've stayed with them at least five times now and they are always so thoughtful, kind and caring. They think of all the little things and go above and beyond. The Stuga is so comfy and cozy and the setting is gorgeous. If you want a lovely, peaceful, cozy retreat, I highly recommend this sweet spot!

Camp #3 was absolutely gorgeous. Spacious, private from view, tucked away in an amazing spot next to the creek. Stephen came to say hello and tell us about the property. He was friendly and kind. Hiking nearby is nice. The short trek to the split rock is worth it even in the rain with kids and dogs. Fantastic little spot.

Great spot! I have a senior dog who loves to camp but has mobility issues, so the drive in area with flat land was perfect for us! We walked along the paths by the creek and near the campsite. I appreciated being able to collect small wood on the ground to get the fire started, and the convenience of having wood available for purchase. I intentionally picked this spot as a solo camper with my dogs, and felt very comfortable! I also appreciated the picnic table, which I festively decorated to be full send celebrating the Harvest Moon. Sitting by the fire at night and listening to the creek was a wonderful way to be embraced in nature to decompress.

Audrey and Richard have a beautiful clean place that's just far enough away from the Twin Cities. Sadly, it rained for most of our stay but we were able to hang out in the summer kitchen all day. I brought some games and we packed our lunch. It was a perfect way to spend the day away from it normally hectic weekends.

Staying at Balsam Ridge was like living in a storybook. We arrived at dusk to the warm glow of twinkle lights to guide the way to our tent. Linda and Chris have thought of everything needed for a magical stay. From a warm welcome and tour of the resort to an electric tea kettle and games on hand, the little details made all the difference.

We met Mike after arriving later than we originally hoped - he met us both with a smile and incredibly helpful energy. Mike told us they've had the farm for 30 years and the care they have for the land is very clear. It's a playground for kids, dogs, and adults alike. We will definitely be back.

We stayed in the Secluded Yurt site, which is the furthest away. Loved it! The yurt tent is large. There’s a grill for charcoal cooking, a fire pit, picnic table under a tree providing shade, and a clean outhouse nearby. The walk from parking to the site is about a half mile and Adam has a cart available for use. There is water available near the parking area. Dan is easy to communicate with and responsive. Each of the 4sites are all very private. We saw and heard lots of different birds. Dan has great recommendations for things to do in the area, hikes, dining, etc. we will stay again!

It was the perfect place to relax. It was great to step out of our lives into such a quiet , peaceful place. A snug, little, funky cabin that had everything and more than we needed. A host who was warm and friendly. Just a terrific time away. Wish we had stayed one more night.
