Thank you for a great 2025 camping season! We hosted more Hipcampers than any year before and are excited to have been honored again with a Best in Minnesota award. Every year we have more and more returning campers; we are honored that you make us part of your memories.
Big Woods State Park is less than 2 miles away. Faribault is 8 miles and Northfield is 9 miles from our driveway; they offer dining, boutiques, and all other amenities. Nerstrand is 4.5 miles east and has a gas station and a fantastic meat market. Numerous Cannon River put-ins are within 10 miles.
We do not have firewood available at the campground; please plan ahead to bring firewood with you.
A map of the land is in the photos and shows locations of sites, parking and more. All Sites are Walk-In! We have a cart you may use to haul gear in.
Vehicles: Our main parking area by sites 1, 2, & 3 is easily accessible. The road to the secondary parking area beside our hilltop site 4 is up an adventurous gravel road (but is very accessible).
This campground is managed by Stephen and Molly on land owned by them and their father Ted. In 1961, Stephen's grandparents bought this farm. In addition to farming they also operated a trail riding stable here. Over the years, the arable land has been sold, but we retained the wooded areas which are twice crossed by creeks. About 30 years ago, a 60 acre county park bordering the south and west sides of our land was created.
We are very excited to host campers as a way to preserve and share this beautiful property.

Many folks that have visited our place refer to it as 'country living in the city'.
We are so blessed to live in this little piece of serenity just inside the city limits of Duluth.
Our home was once an abandoned house that sat for years until a friend mentioned to us that it might be going up for sale. We loved the location and rolled up our sleeves. Twenty years later we still marvel at the beauty around us and can hardly believe that we LIVE here!
Just down the road is a trout stream and beyond that was a popular farm that attracted many folks to this neighborhood for hay rides and sleigh rides. The farm has since retired its horses and closed its doors to make room for new homes, but memories live on in the beauty of the open fields. I often imagine the sound of horses and sleigh bells and people singing carols and then warming up around a toasty fire sipping hot cocoa. Some of those memories live on right here at Balsam Ridge (minus the horses). Over the years many groups of folks have enjoyed a sense of community in these back woods no matter the season. Campfires, kids catching frogs, neighborhood campouts, snow picnics, hair-raising toboggan runs, family campouts, spiritual silent retreats, a take-your-breath-away giant swing, and some tales too daring to mention are all part of the fun.
This is why we do what we do. We've been given much, and love to give back. It just wouldn't seem right to keep all this good to ourselves.

Welcome ; Located in southeast Minnesota's Driftless region of hills, valleys, fields and forests, we are a grass based working dairy farm with over 100 acres of woodland,
including an extensive trail system and campsites in our wooded acres. What makes this woodland special is it's quiet, secluded setting and over 6 miles of hiking / skiing trails.
Our farmstead sits three quarter of a mile off the paved county highway on our well maintained gravel driveway.
Each of our campsites are secluded from the others with their own sawdust compost toilets, picnic tables, fireplaces, and firewood.
Two of our sites require 4WD with a minimum of 6 inches ground clearance
to access, and two are accessible with 2WD.
If you do not have 4WD we can help transport your gear while you enjoy the walk in.
There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. At night it is common for owls to visit the campsite area to say hello, and coyotes talking in the distance. The winding trails through 100 acres of woodland offer a variety of woodland habitats, from Old growth Maple to mixed hardwood, to dense brush, to the edges of open pastureland. Bring your fat bike or mountain bike for an enjoyable ride.
For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing
or snowshoeing / hiking
on the property. However the Rock Bottom Cabin is our only heated and insulated site and is available for winter booking. Winter access is walk in only with snow on the ground or in the forecast. We can help transport gear.
This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm and guided tours of the dairy and cattle are available when scheduling allows.
Children 12 and younger are free at our campsites.
No need to be counted as guests , but please let us know when requesting to book.
We do not allow non-booked visitors to our campsites due to the secluded, remote location, and accessibility.

We have a lovely piece of property to come enjoy a getaway at. We enjoy all of the peace and quiet around here. The night sky is unbeatable in my eyes. We have a small hobby farm with lots of very tame animals. We have 42 acres to roams with lots of trails within the woods that are filled with aged oak trees and many young maple trees. Our property is filled with lots of wild flowers and wildlife.
We are locate 3 miles from the root river if you enjoy fishing or going for a float down the river. There are two caves in our area that are a must see while you are visiting. I you like to hike there is a state park 14 minutes from us that have many miles of hiking trails and horse trails.
If you are more the small town strolling type of person we have lots of small towns around us that are filled with shops and lots of great food! There is a large system of bike trails in our area that make a very fun way to check out some of the small towns.
If you have a family with kids we have a lot of fun activities you can do with your kids, like spending time with the goats and chickens, playing on our playground, or taking a nice walk through the woods looking for fossils!

Enjoy 10 acres shared between 2 sites! The two campsites are large and can accommodate approximately 6 tents comfortably at each. If more is needed let us know we have room and can accommodate. There is a shared bathroom/changing room and trash/recycling between the sites. There is a hand pump well left of the last gate if you need to fill up on drinking water just make sure you have a container for it. Site includes a picnic table and firepit and many acres with downed trees to salvage. Pre-purchased firewood can be picked up at the farm stand, you can also purchase more there if needed. This area includes a back pasture and woods with trails throughout for walking/mountain biking. There are many horse trails in the area, if you want to bring your horses that is fine as long as you bring containment for them and clear it with us first. We are approximately 1 mile from a rum river access. There are multiple river trip options from our property. We are also 3 mins from Lake George and the Rum River Regional Park for swimming, biking, fishing, boating, and more paddling. There is a Bills gas n grocery as well as a G-will liquors less than a minute from the property. The Ponds golf course is about 4 mins away as well. If you are looking to hit downtown Anoka that is a straight shot and approx 12 mins away. This site is on an active hobby farm that has dogs, cats, horses, chickens, goats, and multiple gardens. We have a farm stand by the road where we sell items such as fresh roasted coffee, eggs, BBQ sauce, pickles, maple syrup, hot sauce, and more! We are very pet friendly and like to meet new furry faces, so feel free to bring them along!

Once the site of the historic V.J. Fetzner Brewery from the late 19th Century. The land is now used as a hobby farm, honey bee sanctuary and nursery to a unique tree species normally not found in Southeastern Minnesota.
Remnants of the brewery are still visible. Foundation walls outline the massive structure of the brewery. Nestled in the center of the foundation is the entrance to
the sixty-seven foot deep cave that
once held barrels of beer and can be accessed by canoe only.
Hops have been located on the property and are believed to be ancestors of those raised to make the beer once stored in the cave. The pond that provides access to the cave was dug out in the early 1990's to create a fish out for the Spring Falls Trout Farm that used to exist across the highway. Some of the original brood stock still exist and continue to naturally stock the pond. It is not uncommon to see fish that are five to ten pounds in size. We do not allow fishing from our pond.
The residents house is built to scale to the original brew master's house. While the house is only twenty-four years old it looks as though you have taken a step back in time. The name Shady Rest was given to the house by
the Brew Master's wife.
We thought it was appropriate to keep the name alive.
Shady Rest Acres is comprised of twenty-three acres of beautiful woodlands and pasture that are protected forever
in the
Minnesota Land Trust. The pasture is home to Scottish Highlander cows, two miniature donkeys, five sheep, four goats, honey bees and a flock of chickens. Scottish Highlanders
were selected for both their grazing and browsing abilities. They are very docile and make excellent pasture mates to the smaller species sharing the pasture. The cows are excellent forest managers. They
clear out invasive species such as Honey Suckle, Buckthorn, and Barberry which can often be difficult to manage. A guided tour with the host can be taken to meet the pasture animals.
The forest is comprised of many tree species. Some are unique in that they normally do not grow in this region of Minnesota. The yellow birch is a species normally found in Northern Minnesota. It's bark is golden in color and glistens when the sun hits it just right. We have a cluster of several yellow birch including one that is so big that the bark no longer looks golden but instead is grey and very rough. Years ago the largest of these trees made excellent wood for turning bowls. Blue Beech (musclewood) can also be found on the property. As the name indicates the bark is shaped like muscles. Songbirds and some other species will use different parts of the tree as a food source. Towering white pines also speckle the landscape. Mother pine requires at least two humans arm lengths to encircle the whole tree. She is a favorite resting spot for the barred owl. There is oak, elm, maple, ceders, poplars and numerous other species.
Honey bees are an integral part of the landscape. We partnered with a friend and
started raising honey bees two years ago in order to do our part to keep pollinators thriving.
Their hives are located in the pasture where it has the perfect amount of early morning sun to get them moving and afternoon shade to balance out the summer heat. It is not uncommon to see them pollinating garden plants, trees and wild flowers around the property. One of their favorite feeding spots is the acre and a half prairie which offers a range of plants including big blue stem, wild indigo and baby blue stem, to name a few. Not only are honey bees essential to the food chain but they also provide a very enriching experience when they are observed moving about their hives. There is nothing more relaxing and fascinating than watching these amazing creatures.

The site is next to the garage, so it's not completely "out in nature," but it's easy to back into using my driveway. There are also fewer bugs since it's not out in the "back 40." :)
The Camping Spot: For the purists who want to pitch a tent right on the ground. Fall asleep to the rustle of the leaves and wake up surrounded by clover and wildflowers. You can choose almost anywhere on my 5 acres! No amenities are available.
Things to Know & Ground Rules
A Note on Pets: I love animals, but because my elderly dog and chickens rule the roost and roam freely, all guest pets must be kept on a leash at all times for everyone's safety. No exceptions.
The Landscape: Because I don't meticulously mow or maintain traditional landscaping, the ground can be uneven and grasses may be tall. Wear appropriate footwear, bring insect protection, and embrace the wild!

You can walk to the our pole shed, "Steinbeck" and pet the animals.
We have a horse "Buddy", donkey "Archer", two goats "Frank and Randy", five sheep "Lorraine, Mabel, and Princess Mary Margaret just to name a few! We have 9 egg laying hens named "The Ladies", and our Brittany Spaniel dog., "Benji." You can hike through the woods.
We are situated in 174 acres and adjacent to state forest land.
The loons call in the evening and life is good relaxing at East Lake Ranch.

Parking is provided for 1 vehicle. No trailers (sorry). Check-in is an easy self serve process for your convenience. Please note the parking and outhouse is near the owner's residence and there is 1 rental cabin that may be sharing the parking area and outhouse.
Additional notes to consider: During certain times of the year, particularly fall, it is also possible to hear occasional hunting from other large properties around the lake, but be assured there is no hunting on our property or our direct neighbors and you are located securely in the center of our 15.5 acres.
To clarify location: We are located in Rice Lake, MN, a suburb of Duluth (with a Duluth address). :) Also, the bugs can be a challenge in summer so bring protection. We look forward to hosting you!

I booked this spot on a whim a few months back with some pals and didn’t think much about it until I pulled up! Aimee was so kind and her space is perfect! So close to Duluth but far enough so the light pollution is no problem! I spent my first night solo camping and felt EXTREMELY safe and at home here! Lots of wild life and the star gazing was out of this world!!!! After chasing good stargazing spots all over for a few years this was my first big win! You can see everything! So grateful for my weekend away on this hidden treasure!!! We will be back!

Our family loved our stay in the Gokotta tent! We just wanted a few days away unplug and to end the summer and was exactly what we needed! We wanted to camp but didn’t want all the work with setting up a tent etc so this was perfect. So many cozy touches at our site and around the whole area. It’s not as remote as the pictures show - just a large beautiful property that has some trails, so grocery store etc conveniently close by if needed. We went up to Two Harbors for a day which was about an hour drive. Our boys seemed to just want to go back to the “glamp” site though. Lol. Our boys are 10, 14 and 16 and all loved it. We enjoyed playing the homemade carpet ball game on site as a family (got pretty competitive), the swings, and just sitting by the campfire. We played cards one night in a cute building down by the little pond. Everything there had so much character and thought put into it. Even the outhouses were cute and had working light switches.
Linda and Chris were the sweetest people and genuinely wanted us to have the best stay. Will definitely go back! We loved Gokotta because was more private at the far end of the property and worked great for our family!

Great experience. Allen met me at the campground to show me my campsite. Very nice host and communication throughout was spot on. Very spacious, well maintained and surrounded by trees. The property is a bit off the highway - far enough for privacy but the cars and trucks you do hear. My site #101 was the closest to the road. More spots were available further in. A large property to walk around, the site had everything for a nice campfire and the night sky was truly amazing!

Loved this!! Site was well maintained, felt secluded. The babbling creek was perfect, and the kids could spend hours throwing rocks into it. Also really appreciated the ability to hike Caron Park right from the site. Playing in the little waterfall was a highlight. Would love to come back!

I recommend this site if you want a peaceful & secluded space close to Duluth and many state parks. This was a wonderful find when all the state park camp spots were full for the weekend. Aimee was super responsive and we ended up upgrading to a spot that allowed fires so we could cook and sleep under the stars. There were other sites booked but we didn’t see anyone else while we were there - it was perfect for a secluded space on a beautiful piece of land.

We absolutely loved our weekend here! The Mellow Yellow site was beautiful and surrounded by what felt like a sea of yellow wildflowers. It was incredibly peaceful, private, and exactly the kind of place you go when you want to unplug for a few days.
We spent the weekend watching wildlife, exploring the creek, sitting around the fire, and attempting to catch trout off a bridge just down from the site who apparently had absolutely no interest in anything we brought them. 😂 Even without the fish cooperating, being right by the creek was one of our favorite parts.
It was such a relaxing place to slow down and spend time together as a family. We booked our next stay before leaving. If you love quiet campsites, nature, wildlife, and being away from the usual crowded campground atmosphere, this place is a gem. ❤️🌿🏕️

I loved car camping at this site! Each spot was pretty private and roomy. I also appreciated the cute outhouse with a flushing little toilet! Also I loved all the wildflowers around the property, would definitely come again!
