Come up the long driveway and experience the spacious view of the open hay field.
Camp in the open or tucked away in the trees. You choose the spot as long as it's not in the horse pasture, cow pasture when cows are in, or in the hay field when hay is long before it's cut. Hay field would be off limits roughly late June to Mid July during optimal growth time and cutting.
Note: This is a primitive camping experience. We offer no amenities, no toilets, no water.
We are a 20 minute drive from the North Entrance to Itasca State Park and the Headwaters of the Mississippi.
LaSalle Lake State Recreation Area is also just a few minutes down the road from us.

Goldie is open for the summer!
Goldie is an original early 1900's wooden caboose that ran on the DMIR railroad. She was re-designed in 1912 to be safer on the tracks (and her length extended so she wouldn't fall over). She ran the tracks of the Iron Range until retirement in 1968. She's been fully renovated with a few modern conveniences.
We've re-used as much of the original wood as possible, and repurposed many things into other things so that we could keep the history alive. My husband is the carpenter that brought her to life and I'm the one that gave her some paint and design.
Now, she's ready for people again, and to keep telling her story to others. Please...be our guest...and let Goldie be your host. The caboose sits about 50 yards from the house, but it tucked into the trees and feels very private. There is a private trail that leads from the caboose to the lake.
Goldie has a max occupancy of 2 people due to space constraints. Please no pets since there are wooden floors. If you have a service dog, of course it is welcome - please reach out to me about that detail.
She also offers:

We do have pets and they do run around the yard freely. There are two dogs that love to romp and say hi (a female Golden Retriever and a female Griffon mix) and a female cat that does the same. They are super friendly, but they will come to visit you at the lake.
Our lake is an "environmental lake" so while we keep a small beach area that you are welcome to use, it is not free of lily pads or weeds. It's simple, but fully swimm-able (the Golden Retriever keeps the first 8 feet of water weed free with her swimming!). You are welcome to use the dock and chairs we keep there for breezy evenings or to take a dip to cool off.
We are only 2i-sh miles from town with gas, food, ice cream, coffee shop, resaturants, small town shopping and a donut shop. There is a paved rail trail just down our street that runs both directions for many miles. Bikes are welcome! (please leave ATVs at home).

You can even take a 30-mile drive to Itasca State Park, home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River, where you can walk right across the headwaters!

This is the perfect relaxing vacation spot! I was able to get off the bike trail and go straight here to stay for a rest with the easy access to a kayak and large lake. It’s very quiet and I saw lots of wildlife like geese, deer, and squirrels. I could hear the loons calling and saw a few while kayaking as well. With low light pollution in this area I saw many stars on a clear night. The fire pit was very convenient along with being able to walk to the convenient grocery store just down the road. The site was very clean and spacious and I will definitely go again!

This is such a great site to stay at, and we’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a nice spot. Honestly, we’d love to keep it to ourselves, but that would be selfish. There’s plenty of room to maneuver larger vehicles, and the site was well maintained.
If we had one complaint, it would be the noise from vehicles passing by the property. Other than that, it’s a fantastic place to check out. It’s located perfectly for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities.

Such a beautiful hideout in the woods. Paul was a wonderful host from his house nearby. Beyond that, we were surrounded by beautiful woods, the lake, and the quiet. Within an hour of Bemidji and even closer to Itasca State Park. Would recommend to anyone!

We loved our stay. (2 adults, 1 dog) It was extremely private. We got to watch 2 beavers eat lily pads all day everyday, a wild turkey family run around, trumpeter swans and many squirrels and chipmunks. Surprisingly no ticks and hardly and mosquitoes (just flys). The trails are very wide, well maintained and easy to navigate. Definitely recommend.

We adored our stay! Our highlights were cooking over the fire, wildlife watching (we saw a few loons, some frogs, a painted turtle, lots of fish, some deer and a beaver!). We loved the canoe — the lake is beautiful and serene. We even did a little fishing and caught 3 bluegill and cooked them up for dinner. Our senior pup, Hank, was also absolutely in heaven. We found the stay private, deeply connected to nature, comfortable, and romantic. If you’re looking for a place to unplug & recharge — this is a beautiful spot to do so!

Staying at Goldie the Caboose, was an absolute gift. The location is perfectly located on a clean, quiet lake and just off the Heartland Trail Bike/Walking path! Everything you would
need was supplied without any of the distracting extras. It was like camping but with a/c and running water—basically perfect! I loved my time connecting with nature and escaping the hustle of everyday life. Amy and Chris were so kind and their pups made missing my dog at home much easier! I can’t wait to come back next summer!

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here! I had been in search of a secluded quiet camping experience that wasn’t in a campground with other people nearby and this was exactly what I was after! There’s an outhouse, a fire ring, and even access to water if need be! Those essentials makes it the perfect place to get that rugged secluded camp life feel! Directions were easy to follow! It’s located within 10 minutes of Mentor MN which has a gas station with things such as ice and firewood readily available to assist in your camping experience! We also went to maple lake public fishing dock and enjoyed some fishing, and that was only 15 ish minutes from the site! Cody was a pleasure to work with and I would definitely recommend this site to others, and I myself will be back! Thanks Cody!

We loved our time at Amy and Chris’s property! Amy gave us great local recommendations for our adventure and we really enjoyed exploring the area. Goldie the caboose is beautiful- truly an incredible labor of love. Flipping through the photo book detailing her restoration/ renovation was super cool. We were incredibly cozy (the morning thunderstorm we experienced was amazing) and we really appreciated all of the amenities. The fire pit was great and listening to the loon calls was magical. We also loved meeting all of the pets! I will definitely be recommending this place to friends and family. 🙂

This is a wonderful rustic cottage on a beautiful little lake. It isn't fancy, but it has. everything you need to enjoy Northern Minnesota-style lake life. There are plenty of trails to explore on the property, and a canoe is included with the rental. Paul is a great host, and is eager to help with any issues and to keep you hip to the local music scene (Revel Brewing rocks, BTW). This location is in the middle of so much to do and to experience. I hope to return someday.
