Goldie is open for the summer!
Goldie is an original early 1900's wooden caboose that ran on the DMIR railroad. She was re-designed in 1912 to be safer on the tracks (and her length extended so she wouldn't fall over). She ran the tracks of the Iron Range until retirement in 1968. She's been fully renovated with a few modern conveniences.
We've re-used as much of the original wood as possible, and repurposed many things into other things so that we could keep the history alive. My husband is the carpenter that brought her to life and I'm the one that gave her some paint and design.
Now, she's ready for people again, and to keep telling her story to others. Please...be our guest...and let Goldie be your host. The caboose sits about 50 yards from the house, but it tucked into the trees and feels very private. There is a private trail that leads from the caboose to the lake.
Goldie has a max occupancy of 2 people due to space constraints. Please no pets since there are wooden floors. If you have a service dog, of course it is welcome - please reach out to me about that detail.

We do have pets and they do run around the yard freely. There are two dogs that love to romp and say hi (a female Golden Retriever and a female Griffon mix) and a female cat that does the same. They are super friendly, but they will come to visit you at the lake.
Our lake is an "environmental lake" so while we keep a small beach area that you are welcome to use, it is not free of lily pads or weeds. It's simple, but fully swimm-able (the Golden Retriever keeps the first 8 feet of water weed free with her swimming!). You are welcome to use the dock and chairs we keep there for breezy evenings or to take a dip to cool off.
We are only 2i-sh miles from town with gas, food, ice cream, coffee shop, resaturants, small town shopping and a donut shop. There is a paved rail trail just down our street that runs both directions for many miles. Bikes are welcome! (please leave ATVs at home).

Within ten miles are plentiful restaurants and stores in Park Rapids, Dorset, and Nevis. There are often music festivals throughout the summer, and several of the restaurants and bars host live music, some of which are played by Debbie, one of your two hosts! You can even take a 30-mile drive to Itasca State Park, home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River, where you can walk right across the headwaters!

The 80-acre property is carved out of a Norway pine plantation. Sites are approximately 10,000 square ft. in size with about 50 ft. of trees between each site for semi-privacy. We have tried to maintain a balance of nature while making the sites as RV friendly as possible. Although the property is located in the country, it is located along a state highway for easy access and there are three towns and many amenities and recreational venues within 15 minutes drive. Currently no hook-ups, but there is a yard hydrant and dump station. There are also portable restrooms on site.

The cabin is nestled in the woods on a ridge among a grove of older pines, away from the lakeshore. Take a short hike down the ridge to reach the shore and enjoy a private peninsula in Woman Lake's Hunters Bay. The west side of the bay is teeming with wildlife. Enjoy the resident bald eagle pair nesting in the neighbor's pine, as well as a nearby beaver lodge and loon's nest. Much of the property to the west is bordered by state land, perfect for privacy, nature hikes, and hunting.
The cabin features neutral colors, pine ceilings, minimal décor, excellent use of space, and abundant windows, so you can enjoy plenty of natural light and views of the surrounding woods. The great room includes comfortable leather furniture, a dining table, a 75-inch Smart TV with a PS4, and a cozy wood stove. The thoughtfully designed galley kitchen has all the essentials and a large pantry.
There's also a breakfast nook and work area with an additional dining table and chairs. The main-level bedroom has a queen bed and plenty of closet space. The loft features two queen beds and one single bed. The bathroom includes a shower and a heater/exhaust fan. A washer and dryer are also provided.
Other things to note:
The lakeshore is beautiful, but it requires a short walk along the gravel road followed by a short hike down to the water, where you'll find metal chairs and a dock. The dock is very basic but functional, and a boat can be tied to it. Aquatic plants become more abundant in the water later in the summer. The dock is available from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
We are continuing to improve the lakeshore by finishing steps down the slope and hope to add a longer dock in the future. Please reach out with any questions.

Our stay at Paul's Lakeside Cottage exceeded every expectation! Paul is an incredible host and made us feel right at home. One of the highlights was a sunset cruise on the lake that we'll never forget.
The cottage was the perfect home base for exploring Itasca State Park and Bemidji, while still offering a peaceful place to relax. We saw so much wildlife—including a bear sitting on the beaver dam across the lake!
Our dog, Piper, absolutely loved her stay and had so much fun playing with Paul's sweet dog, Piper. She definitely wasn't ready to leave!
If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway with an amazing host, this is it. We couldn't have asked for a better experience and can't wait to come back!

Beautiful site. Hosts were very nice and gave advice about the area to us upon arrival. They gave us all the firewood we needed, and the site and driveway were very well kept. Our Mitsubishi Outlander had no problem with the narrow and steep driveway. Would highly recommend!

This camp site is truly a hidden gem. It's super private, and we had the campsite all to ourselves. I want to start by saying the view is amazing, and the nature is outstanding. The amount of animals and variety of bugs was incredible. But I will be honest, the ticks and horsefly's were the only nuisance of the trip. They are pretty bad in the mornings, but otherwise tolerable during the rest of the day. The pond is beautiful, and has a family of beavers living on it. We got to hear them working during the night, it was super cool.
The location is only 20 mins from Park Rapids, so if you need supplies or want to check out the town, it's not too far away. The site Does Not have water or electricity, and the bathrooms are a bit far from the camp site. I Wouldn't recommend walking to them in the middle of the night. Maybe bring a bucket. There is also a storm shelter if needed.
They also provide wood, which you can pick up at the entrance of the site. They were actually kind enough to bring us wood all the way from the entrance to our campsite Twice! We were so grateful. The host's are amazingly nice people, and we had great communication with them!
My number one favorite thing about the entire trip/site, was the star gazing! I've never seen so many stars in my entire life! It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. You can literally see every star in the sky from this location! 🤩

Debbie and Steve were awesome! So friendly, met us at the cabin and showed us around. Whatever you need, they’ll accommodate. The cabin was clean and comfortable, and the massage chairs were amazing after a long day in the sun!
There is so much wildlife to watch and listen to. The water was a bit weedy at the dick but we were able to use floaties to move out to open water and it was so beautiful. Even caught a fish off the dock!

Beautiful private lake! Canoe on site. We caught bluegill of 3 types, crappie, bass and northern. Close to Itasca and Paul Bunyon State Forrest.
Kitchen full of appliances and stocked with supplies.
Clean bathroom. Shower, towels supplied.
Great for a back country getaway!!!

3 nights at Paul’s Lakeside Cottage
I felt like I was at a private nature retreat. Watching and listening to the lake activity was magical. Loons, trumpet swans, beavers…..and the birds! Have your Merlin App ready to go and don’t forget your binoculars. The property is amazing, the host is amazing. Truly a special getaway, and a quick drive to Nevis, Itasca State Park and Park Rapids for local adventures. I can’t wait to go back.

Nice and peaceful... big campsites. Primative sites.. does have a porta potty, dump station, portable water, picnic table, fire ring and firewood available. Sites are beautiful among the pines. Allen met us there and escorted us to our site. Very great communication! Would highly recommend. We stayed on site 104. Thanks Allen for providing a great place to camp.

We really enjoyed our stay here and would return. We loved using the wood burning stove in the cabin, letting our dog roam free on the land, and being on the water. The cabin is rustic yet comfortable. It had everything we needed. We loved being close to the headwaters and getting to know Paul and his pup Piper.

What a great place to just get lost in the woods! Im new to Scamp camping and Allen was so patient with me and my son. He took time to make sure we had everything we needed and checked on us while there a couple of times. Very helpful and kind. Great wooded area. Nice solar lit portal potties, picnic bench, tons of firewood and lots of quiet! Definitely stop if going by or want to get away. Level areas and big paths to drive down to the spots. Water, and dump if you want. Perfect. Thank you Allen! 😃

Paul's spot is absolutely beautiful. A thoughtful and spacious cabin right on the lake . Super comfortable bed , a wood stove, everything you need including a view. The lake is a wildlife viewing haven and you can see a ton of creatures if you take the time to walk around. The dock is a nice addition, and I went out and had ana maxing night of stargazing there. Played guitar by the fireplace, what more could you ask for . Oh wait, yeah Paul is rad. He has a ton of awesome stories and is living g his dream of being off grid. His pal Piper is an awesome pup as well. There is nothing g negative i can say. This place is a gem, as is the host.

Feeling bogged down? Well, the only cure may be to visit a bog! Lake Bemidji State Park is home to some of Minnesota’s more unusual and unique plants and wildlife. If you take the Bog Walk through this wetland preserve, you may see insect-eating plants and wild orchids, eagles and osprey, even treefrogs and deer! For a longer walk, you can find the trailhead for the Paul Bunyan State Trail right inside the park. There is easy access to Lake Bemidji and the downtown area, perfect for a day out on the water and an evening wining-and-dining in the city.
