The Lost Dutchman Italian Bar Camp is a 160 acres of Priviately Owned Patented Mining land and our priviate campground located in the Stanislaus National Forest and on the South Fork of the Stanislaus River, which runs through the camp.
Camping is available on both side of the river making the Italian Bar camp a destination for campers since we rebuilt the camp from the ground up in the late 1970’s.
Whether you want to relax in your campsite listening to the river, dip your toes in the cool waters or try your hand at panning for gold, I-Bar offers all of this and more. There are miles of hiking opportunities around the camp as well, from short river hikes to Trailblazing like the Miners of old. Little History:
The property was discovered and first settled around 1849 as a gold rush mining camp. At one time over 3,000 people lived here and mined for gold. When the gold rush came to an end so did Italian Bar. Until over a hundred years later, In 1976 when our founder fell in love with this remote property and purchased the land and we began rebuilding the I-Bar camp from the ground up and opened it to our members. It didn't hurt that somewhere close by Our founder found a 800oz pocket of gold. Even today, Prospecting for gold is encouraged!
If you want to try your hand at “Gettin on some of the shiny” let the Caretakers know! We have a few gold pans we loan out that are just waiting for some color to make you smile.
Of course we have pans for sale.
If you’re an avid outdoors person, carrying a gold pan with you just makes sense.

You will be in gold country where you can still find gold in the creek to this day! If you're lucky, you might find a nugget, but there's mostly pickers and fines.
The nights are absolutely stunning for viewing the stars with no light pollution. You will have almost complete privacy, with the exception of an occasional over head aircraft. I have only one group at a time.

The End of The Driveway is one big site for buses/RVs/big vans next to the Soup Kitchen. 1 Pine and 2 Pine are up a separate driveway on the ridge.
The driveway spot is down the driveway a couple hundred yards from where we usually are so you’ll more or less be on your own, depending on if we have work to do down there or if there are other campers. We are happy to chat or leave you be, just let us know what your needs are. If you’re looking for a more isolated spot, see the listings for 1 Pine or 2 Pine.
The 2nd area is “1 Pine” accessed by our second driveway that is 100 yards down the road from the farm. The driveway is kind of rough but definitely manageable with a truck, SUV or sedan if you’re willing to go for it. The drive goes up a couple hundred yards to the hilltop where there is a clearing and, you guessed it, 1 pine tree. From the back of the clearing there is a trail that leads you to 2 Pine, which is a walk that takes just a few minutes. 2 Pine is walk-in only but has great views of the sunset and is totally secluded and private and would be a good spot to either bring some friends for a little sunset party or for someone who wants to seriously unplug. There are plenty of flat spots to pitch a tent.

The L3 Ranch was founded in 1974 when my grandfather bought the property for his show cows. In 1978, someone gave him a racehorse to pay off a debt. From then on, the property was known for its Quarter horse race horses, with some of the best in the state being born right here. In 2013 he found our he had cancer and handed the ranch down to me, Travis. While he survived the cancer, he's happy in retirement playing cards with his buddies every week and hanging out with his dog.Now the ranch is known for its horse boarding, cattle, and goats. We even hold weddings and events at the lake sometime. My main goal is to bring the ranch in a more in line with sustainable ranching. Its a process, but I love what I am doing, and where the ranch is going.

The dogs are adorable, eggs delicious, lake clear and gorgeous. Host was very kind in assisting us in and out of the site, making sure we were safe, and that we knew where everything was. Site had much more than expected and listed. Kayaking was very fun and the lake only had a few other boats that we saw the entire time. Would visit again!

This was the most beautiful, fun, and relaxing experience we’ve had camping so far. The views were amazingly beautiful of the river and mountains, my boyfriend and I were in awe the whole time. Terry was such an amazing host he was very knowledgeable and kind and he made sure we were good and tended to us very well. We will be back over the summer and we can’t wait!

Our family of 3 had a memorable stay at Strange Ranch. Terry provided great detail about what to expect leading up to our trip, including current weather forecast and better navigational tips than Google maps.
The first plus was how accommodating Terry was, especially when we showed up 6 hrs later than original ETA. He opened up the gates for us around 11PM and escorted us to our site.
Site 3 was more space than we needed and came equipped with a brand new permanent shade structure w/ picnic table, custom firepit, and potable water source. We were able to fit our 6 person tent, 10x10 EZ Up, and slightly larger enclosed shade tent area with plenty of room to spare.
The communal restroom was probably a few minutes downhill walk (right between sites 1 & 2), but we never walked it as we had our own portable toilet. We did drive down a few times (maybe less than a minute drive) to access the communal wash basin, trash/recycle bins, and access to the river.
Highly recommend visiting the river and signing up for the aquatic wildlife tour, esp if you're into bugs. Our 2 y/o son had a BLAST playing in and around the river. The temp of the water is pretty chilly this time of year, so we didn't get to get in further than our knees, but it was still a ton of fun. Bonus was getting to play fetch with Terry's dog, Whiskey, who had no problem swimming for the hours we were there.
We'll be back! (with a bigger group)

Exactly as described…actually…better! Goes above and beyond for a campground….Games, campfire, covered picnic area, horseshoe pits, clean gravel, no dirt…the list of all the little touches goes on! Very private. We would stay again!

As a first time HipCamper, this was an amazing first trip. The land is beautiful, open and a bit wild. We pulled into Sawyers Bar #4 with a big rig without any trouble. The roads are well maintained and level. The camp area is very clean, weed whacked and spread out. We met Tom shortly after arriving and he was so interested in our needs and comfort on the ranch. We spent 3 nights and throughout all of it Tom would pop in now and then just to check in. As we are both curious people we asked him lots of questions and he was not only full of information but gave it freely and never seemed liked we were holding him up. The Sawyers bar area is 6 sites and it was mostly young families and quiet couples. The outhouses are well positioned and well maintained. We were impressed with how nice they were. The 2 near our site even had a sink and paper towels. The river was easily accessed from many paths with one main sandy beach area for all guests to share.
We loved it and highly recommend this spot.

Originally we booked campsite 4 for 2 nights but the host Terry was so kind and upgraded our group to site 1, which has a view of the creek and close access to washroom/water.
The whole experience was a 10/10 and we will be coming back for sure.

Absolutely exceeded all expectations! Our family lover every part of Travis’s space. The BBBQ, Refrigerator, outlets, and bathrooms made it so nice. It’s on a ranch so all the animals and wildlife were so amazing as well. Frogs and wild turkeys filled the air with beautiful sounds. Fishing was great! Everyone caught fish.

I’ll totally want to be back in this camping place, we stay in the spot 2 there is a perfect tree that gives you a shade, easy trail to visit the cave, perfect spot to listen to the river. We went to celebrate my husband birthday and it was awesome.

We had such a great stay here. The property is absolutely beautiful, and Sawyer’s Site #1 was right on the river shore. Falling asleep to the sound of the water was a highlight.
We also had the chance to meet Tom, who came by to introduce himself. He was incredibly kind and welcoming, which made the experience even better.
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway.

This was the first visit to Strange Ranch, and it wont be the last!
*FIRST AND FOREMOST* You WILL NEED AWD/4X4 CAPABLE VEHICLES!
(The paths to the sites are on dirt inclines)
Now the good stuff: We stayed at site 1 which was amazing with the view of the trees, birds, poppy’s all on the hillside sides & the sound of the river through the night. There are paths to hike with proper gear and many land features like
Native American grinding stones and a small Gold mine shaft. You can hike to & reach BLM lands from camp making this a proper hiker’s dream base camp!
The warm day and the cold night made for a serene atmosphere.
Terry, our camp host, was very courteous, polite, and accommodating. He and his amazing dog Whiskey made the trip that much more special, and will be the main reason for our return!

Beautiful property, with one of the cleanest/most extravagant public bathrooms that I've seen. If you're staying between Thursday and Sunday, I definitely recommend stopping by the winery tasting room for a flight of wine before 5pm. Perfect way to enjoy a sunset while camping!
