The Lost Dutchman Italian Bar Camp is a 160 acres of Priviately Owned Patented Mining land and our priviate campground located in the Stanislaus National Forest and on the South Fork of the Stanislaus River, which runs through the camp. Camping is available on both side of the river making the Italian Bar camp a destination for campers since we rebuilt the camp from the ground up in the late 1970’s. Whether you want to relax in your campsite listening to the river, dip your toes in the cool waters or try your hand at panning for gold, I-Bar offers all of this and more. There are miles of hiking opportunities around the camp as well, from short river hikes to Trailblazing like the Miners of old. We are betting that you can find the types of hiking you are looking for. You camping includes access to the Bathhouse with commodes and showers. And yes there is even hot water. Little History: The property was discovered and first settled around 1849 as a gold rush mining camp. At one time over 3,000 people lived here and mined for gold. When the gold rush came to an end so did Italian Bar. Until over a hundred years later, In 1976 when our founder fell in love with this remote property and purchased the land and we began rebuilding the I-Bar camp from the ground up and opened it to our members. It didn't hurt that somewhere close by Our founder found a 800oz pocket of gold. Even today, Prospecting for gold is encouraged! If you want to try your hand at “Gettin on some of the shiny” let the Caretakers know! We have a few gold pans we loan out that are just waiting for some color to make you smile. Of course we have pans for sale. If you’re an avid outdoors person, carrying a gold pan with you just makes sense. All water is labeled non-potable. Guests may purify/filter at their discretion. Our campground is home to wildlife. You can minimize unwanted encounters by properly storing food and garbage. We have one central bathhouse with 3 flushing toilets. Sites vary in distance from a short walk to a short drive. The bathhouse has 4 shower stalls in the rear of the building. The bathhouse is closed from 10pm to 8am. The bathhouse does not have electricity or interior lighting. Our Hacienda section ("H" Sites) has vault toilets. Portables are located throughout the campground for your convenience. Fantastically beautiful site! A four wheel drive car is absolutely necessary on this narrow off road path leading to the site. Note this is not a negative: it was totally fun to ramble up the road and was a sizable part of our adventure. In early August the site was calm and temperate. Even at the summit with a near 360° view, we had calm winds and a nice spot for our rented Jeep and tent. There were views in every direction for miles and miles. We simultaneously saw the sunset and a near full moon rise on the opposite side. If you’re interested in getting into Yosemite, note that it’s almost two hours from this site to the park, so plan accordingly. As a last note, we’d suggest the owner put up some more signage for actually where to park. Even with the instructions, we circled the area two complete times before we found where to park. A simple “go the orange flag” would solve this. Otherwise we highly recommend this as a peaceful spot with spectacular views, totally removed from the world.

Overall we had a great experience staying at this spot! There are great views. The roads are long getting there and there is a couple of tough sections, wouldn’t recommend doing it in the dark and ground clearance was needed at times. The camp spot was not very clearly marked but we found a fire ring and decided to set up next to it.

We had such a great time camping here over the Fourth of July weekend! The views were absolutely beautiful—peaceful, scenic, and the perfect place to unwind. One of the best parts was that it wasn’t overcrowded, which made the whole experience feel more relaxing and enjoyable. What really made our stay stand out was the amazing camp host. Emily was incredibly friendly and welcoming, helping us get settled in right away. We had a couple of minor setbacks (as you sometimes do when camping), and she went above and beyond to help us out. You could really tell she cared about making sure everyone had a good experience. Overall, we couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. We’ll definitely be coming back!

We booked a last minute campsite at Italian Bar and were very pleased! Clean bathrooms and amazingly beautiful site, Emily was so nice! Getting there was easy though I echo what other reviews say with the last 3-4 miles being rocky/bumpy but we were able to get through just fine with my 2WD HRV.

This is a true back to the beauty of nature experience. It is approached through a 22 or so minute drive off the 108, winding down into the canyon on the southeast side of the valley. You can be parked within feet of the lovely north fork of the Tuolumne River. Check in was speedy. They have amazing sites all under tall pines...the water can be heard closeby. Wifi is only accessible if you are in one of the spots closest to the entrance. This is a place to be completely free from Wifi, but you can walk up the hill if necessary to get in touch. Spacious sites, you cannot hear your neighbors. Fires are permitted, which is rare in these mountains. A true CAMP experience.

Pure relaxation with the sound of the very nearby creek. Loved our 14-C campsite. Other campers were polite and didn’t seem to mi d we had our 3 dogs. Hot showers were AMAZING and completely private with times of space. Flushing toilets were and are a must so thank you Jennifer. Cito was the best host and truly welcoming. I especially loved the handmade items for sale to which i purchased a few items on our way out. Thank you for my coffee mugs-my husband and I enjoyed our hot coffee in them this morning. Overall a beautiful place to dry camp. A must visit!!!

Feeling off seclusion and history but with camp support and such friendly and hospitable hosts, Emily and Blaine. Falling asleep with the roar of the river was magical. Easy fire roads to walk, especially with dog. And some mining trails along river. Great spot for kids to run around and bike. 3.5 miles of gravel road so awd recommended and add 15 mins to whatever the navigation tells you. And you probably don’t want to do the drive more than once a day, so plan ahead. I can’t wait to go back. Dog friendly too

Please prepare for a camping in nature experience which includes bugs, pests, rustic restrooms, heated showers, gorgeous, minimally managed watersheds and the most beautiful starry skies! At River Ranch Campgrounds, Tuolumne, CA we offer a range of activities to make your stay enjoyable. Take a hike on one of the many trails winding through the Stanislaus National Forest at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains, or cast a line in the North Fork of the Tuolumne River or Basin Creek for some great native fishing. After a long day of exploration, come back to the campgrounds and relax by the firepit or enjoy a picnic in one of our many picnic areas. Activities in the campground include horseshoes, sand volleyball, sandbox for the kiddos and frisbee golf for all. We pride ourselves on blending nature and family camping in a safe, serene environment. We have one bathhouse with flushing toilets and heated showers; additional portables and vault toilets are located throughout the campground for convenience. Important notes: We are off-grid. There is no electricity in the campground with exception of a small solar powered system to operate our entry gate, guest Wi-Fi and intercom. Outlets are not available for guest use. All water is labeled non-potable. Guests may purify/filter at their discretion. Our campground is home to wildlife. You can minimize unwanted encounters by properly storing food and garbage. We have one central bathhouse with 3 flushing toilets. Sites vary in distance from a short walk to a short drive. The bathhouse has 4 shower stalls in the rear of the building. The bathhouse is closed from 10pm to 8am. The bathhouse does not have electricity or interior lighting. Our Hacienda section ("H" Sites) has vault toilets. Portables are located throughout the campground for your convenience. There is minimal privacy from other campers due to the placement of the sites and the way our trees and vegetation is trimmed for fire resistance. All guests and vehicles must be registered upon arrival.
