Winter is our secret season. Night falls early, so the stars come out by 6pm. That means hours of stargazing before bedtime, even for little ones. Days are cool and sunny under the oaks, the first rains turn the hills green, and evenings are for the campfire and some of the darkest skies in California.
Mark your calendar for this winter’s sky:
Geminid meteor shower, Dec 13–14: the best Geminids in years, with the thin moon setting early and the rest of the night dark. Our favorite weekend of the year.
New moon weekends: Nov 6–8, Dec 4–6, Jan 8–10, and early February, for the darkest skies for the Milky Way, galaxies, and astrophotography.
February planet month: Jupiter and Mars are at their brightest and closest, a few days apart, around Feb 11 and Feb 19. Bring a telescope, or just your eyes.
Winter is also the best time to explore Pinnacles: no summer heat, great hiking on the High Peaks, and California condors overhead. Nearby Panoche Valley is famous for wintering raptors, including golden eagles, ferruginous hawks, and prairie falcons. Here among the oaks, watch for acorn woodpeckers, western bluebirds, oak titmice, and California quail. Bring your binoculars.
Forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) is at the heart of our camping program. It’s the Japanese practice of slow, mindful immersion in nature. There’s no destination and nothing to accomplish: wander or simply sit under the oaks with the dappled light, birdsong, and the breeze in the branches. Ask your host about our self-guided tour.
Shake the dust off your work-worn spirit. Regenerate. Breathe and hear yourself breathe. It’s time to take time, to play with friends and family, and to talk late into the night as the campfire slowly dies and the galaxies whirl above.
What’s here: four spacious, private sites, each with a fire pit and grill and a picnic table with benches. There’s a flush toilet, a HOT outdoor shower (glorious on a cold morning), and clean drinking water from the faucet. Wi-Fi is available if you want it. Firewood is $15 a bundle, sustainably harvested from downed wood. Groups up to 20 are welcome, as are families, solo campers, couples, and well-behaved, on-leash dogs. Your host, Veronica, lives on site and is happy to help.
Winter tips:
Nights are cold, typically 40°F. Bring a warm sleeping bag, layers, and extra blankets.
Road: “The last stretch is dirt and is fine for 2WD in dry weather; after heavy rain we’ll let you know conditions before you arrive.”
Rain: “If a big storm is forecast, message us about moving your dates.”
We’re remote, and GPS and online maps are unreliable. We’ll send directions after you submit your SmartWaivers, so please submit them before you leave. There are no stores nearby, so bring everything you need. If you forget something, ask Veronica, and we can almost always find something for you.
Use us as a home base for Pinnacles, Panoche Valley birding, San Juan Bautista, Monterey, Carmel, and the coast. Or stay put: forest bathing by day, birdwatching at dawn, and stargazing by night. Come with your cares and leave clear and regenerated.

One mile away is Harvey Bear County Park, with trails for bikes, horses or walking. We are 5 minutes from the Gilroy Outlets, yet a world away from the hustle and bustle! Come, relax and enjoy nature! Enjoy Gilroy Gardens (seasonally) or go hiking at a nearby State or County Park. Or just relax at the Farm.

This is an animal farm. If you love new animal experiences, this is the place for you! If you are scared of or allergic to cats or dogs, this might not be the place for you! If you can't handle new smells and sounds, this might not be the place for you. You will feed and enjoy the animals; please respect their space, no chasing and no going into their enclosures.

"The Flying Pig" has a queen bed, bunk beds twin size, and a loft with a twin mattress, all bedding included.
You are not just paying for a place to sleep; you are paying for an experience and the enjoyment of our property :-).
We serve a continental breakfast (free) or hot breakfast ($35/cabin) between 8-9am.
(we can accommodate vegetarian and dairy free diets; let us know before you come).
We provide bedding and towels. There is A/C and a plug-in heater in The Flying Pig. Please do not bring additional things to plug in except for chargers for phone/electronic devices.
We are approximately 1 1/2 hours south of San Francisco,

Gilroy Gardens is 15 min away; Harvey Bear County park is 1 mile away; Monterey and Santa Cruz and the Pinnacles National Park are approximately 1 hour away.

This is great option for those who like to bring all their own gear to camp, and don’t need or want all the extras. Our new Primitive Adventures campsites are located on an established 5-star property. It’s a peaceful, secluded and private country estate. The 20 acre property starts out flat and then gentle to moderate sloped hillside with coastal live oak trees, eucalyptus trees, pine trees, meadows and many interesting landscape features nestled between the vast farmlands of North Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties.
We are 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The weather is usually mild here and we have cool evenings. We do get days that are in the 90s sometimes in the summer and early fall, but we also have lots of shade with all the trees. There is wildlife like deer, turkeys and owls and so much more. We have horses and a donkey, separate from the campsites, so no flies or smell from them. We provide one hot water shower and there are 3 outhouse style toilets on the grounds.
There is NO running water at the sites so we suggest you bring your own drinking water. There will be limited water provided for hand/dish washing.
We are a pack it in/pack it out campground so please, be mindful of waste as we ask that you take it out with you. We do not have dumpsters/trash service on site so please be mindful of this when packing and booking.
You may forage for eucalyptus and oak firewood for free, or pre-cut wood is available for purchase. We hope to see you soon! :)

Hollister Hills State Vehicle Recreation Area (SVRA) is California State Parks’ first SVRA. Located in the Gabilan Mountains, just an hour’s drive south from San Jose, this unique SVRA features over 6,800 acres of scenic and varied terrain. Visitors are drawn to the natural beauty of the park’s oak woodlands, rolling hills, lush canyons, and seasonal creeks with elevations ranging from 660 feet to 2,425 feet. Hollister Hills SVRA offers numerous off-highway vehicle (OHV) opportunities as well as designated hiking, bicycling, and equestrian trails.
The park straddles the San Andreas Fault. The North American tectonic plate (North East side) consists of clay-rich adobe soil with rolling hills covered in grassland and oak woodlands. The Pacific tectonic plate (South West) consists of granitic soil with steeper terrain with pine, sage, and chaparral taking root in the sandy soil. The Pacific and North American tectonic plates have been sliding past each other for 30 million years at a current rate of about 1.5 inches per year. Howard Harris created the foundation of what today is known as Hollister Hills SVRA. Howard’s great grandfather, Jesse Whitton, was a civilian surveyor for the John C. Fremont expedition that traveled through the area in 1846. After the expedition, Jesse Whitton returned to the area and successfully purchased 600 acres for $50 per acre. The land was passed on through the family and finally to Howard Harris in 1959, who became the last private owner of the property. In the following years, Howard purchased more of the surrounding properties and built many of the park’s trails and roads. He used the land for a number of activities including mining, farming, ranching, hunting, scientific studies, and OHV recreation.
OHVs were first used on the ranch in 1947 when Howard established the Bird Creek Hunting Club. Jeeps, motorcycles, and “tote-goats” were used for transportation to get around the ranch. During the 1950s, private OHV activities were held and by 1970, the ranch was officially opened for public OHV recreation. Howard managed the land as a motorcycle park until October 1, 1975, when the land was sold to the State of California and became Hollister Hills SVRA.

It really is a beautiful and wonderful property. There is wildlife, and it is private and peaceful. It is very dark at night and the view of the stars, moon, and planets is amazing.
There is poison oak on the property so please be aware. We will show you what it looks like, so you can easily avoid it.

We are situated in a rural neighborhood setting, with sounds of sheep, goats, chickens, wild turkeys, dogs and many birds nestled between both counties. The terrain is hilly with a few gopher holes. Staying on paths limits poison oak exposure. While respecting your privacy, we can be seen improving the property.

The Space
What to Expect
A million stars on clear nights and crisp mornings overlooking the rolling hills through large, picturesque windows. Peaceful surroundings with minimal traffic on the area's only road. Life moves a little slower out here on the ranch, so take your time and savor the simple pleasures of cooking, visiting, and unwinding.
These rustic homes were built in the 1930s and retain many original details, including charming chippy paint on the original-pane windows. We are also on a well that is rich in minerals, so expect rust-marked porcelain tubs and a distinct mineral taste in the drinking water.
We are a working cattle ranch. When the cows are grazing in the lower pastures, you'll hear and see authentic ranch life in action. There may also be friendly ranch cats hard at work keeping the mouse population in check, along with local wildlife that occasionally meanders through on its way to the nearby watering hole.
Guest Access
Guests are welcome to enjoy the yards around their cabins and the shared covered outdoor kitchen at any time.
Please do not enter any of the white outbuildings or the areas behind them.
With permission, guests may access the ranch trails outside of the PG&E camp. A signed liability waiver is required, and guests must text us to check in and out.
Other Things to Note
We welcome well-behaved, well-socialized, vaccinated pets. Please note that this is a pet-friendly property with other animals on-site, so your pets must be friendly and kept on a leash at all times. Pets may not be left unattended in the house while you are away from the compound area.

Winter is our secret season. Night falls early, so the stars come out by 6pm. That means hours of stargazing before bedtime, even for little ones. Days are cool and sunny under the oaks, the first rains turn the hills green, and evenings are for the campfire and some of the darkest skies in California.
Mark your calendar for this winter’s sky:
Geminid meteor shower, Dec 13–14: the best Geminids in years, with the thin moon setting early and the rest of the night dark. Our favorite weekend of the year.
New moon weekends: Nov 6–8, Dec 4–6, Jan 8–10, and early February, for the darkest skies for the Milky Way, galaxies, and astrophotography.
February planet month: Jupiter and Mars are at their brightest and closest, a few days apart, around Feb 11 and Feb 19. Bring a telescope, or just your eyes.
Winter is also the best time to explore Pinnacles: no summer heat, great hiking on the High Peaks, and California condors overhead. Nearby Panoche Valley is famous for wintering raptors, including golden eagles, ferruginous hawks, and prairie falcons. Here among the oaks, watch for acorn woodpeckers, western bluebirds, oak titmice, and California quail. Bring your binoculars.
Forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) is at the heart of our camping program. It’s the Japanese practice of slow, mindful immersion in nature. There’s no destination and nothing to accomplish: wander or simply sit under the oaks with the dappled light, birdsong, and the breeze in the branches. Ask your host about our self-guided tour.
Shake the dust off your work-worn spirit. Regenerate. Breathe and hear yourself breathe. It’s time to take time, to play with friends and family, and to talk late into the night as the campfire slowly dies and the galaxies whirl above.
What’s here: four spacious, private sites, each with a fire pit and grill and a picnic table with benches. There’s a flush toilet, a HOT outdoor shower (glorious on a cold morning), and clean drinking water from the faucet. Wi-Fi is available if you want it. Firewood is $15 a bundle, sustainably harvested from downed wood. Groups up to 20 are welcome, as are families, solo campers, couples, and well-behaved, on-leash dogs. Your host, Veronica, lives on site and is happy to help.
Winter tips:
Nights are cold, typically 40°F. Bring a warm sleeping bag, layers, and extra blankets.
Road: “The last stretch is dirt and is fine for 2WD in dry weather; after heavy rain we’ll let you know conditions before you arrive.”
Rain: “If a big storm is forecast, message us about moving your dates.”
We’re remote, and GPS and online maps are unreliable. We’ll send directions after you submit your SmartWaivers, so please submit them before you leave. There are no stores nearby, so bring everything you need. If you forget something, ask Veronica, and we can almost always find something for you.
Use us as a home base for Pinnacles, Panoche Valley birding, San Juan Bautista, Monterey, Carmel, and the coast. Or stay put: forest bathing by day, birdwatching at dawn, and stargazing by night. Come with your cares and leave clear and regenerated.

We stayed at Campsite 4 and had a great experience! The campsite was very private and spacious, and each site seemed to have plenty of room and separation from the others. We also liked that our site was close to the toilet and shower, which was really convenient.
We visited in October, and it happened to be unusually hot that weekend, so there were quite a few flies and gnats during the day. I’d recommend bringing bug spray. The road leading into the campground is dusty and unpaved, so a truck or higher-clearance vehicle would definitely make the drive more comfortable.
Veronica was such a kind and welcoming host. She showed us around the property when we arrived and was very helpful. Overall, it was a peaceful, private, and relaxing place to camp, and we really enjoyed our stay!

We booked the entire property for three families and had a wonderful time. Several of our little ones were camping for the first time, and the seclusion made it completely stress-free. No worrying about crying kids disturbing neighbors in the middle of the night! And we can't forget the co-hosts, Daisy the donkey and Hanna the horse. The kids couldn't get enough of feeding them carrots and watermelon. Highly recommend for families looking for a peaceful getaway.

I camp 4-5 times a year at many state, national and regional parks. I've only tried a few Hipcamp spots, but this was a stand-out!
I loved the private immersion in the redwood forest. A small clearing with sufficient sun and shade that feels very remote yet close to town. A nice large, flat spot with a perfect little built-in fire pit, round table with chairs and a private bathroom. Probably one of the quietest places I have ever camped. The horses next to the site are quiet (and beautiful) to see. We brought our own 6' folding Lifetime table which I highly recommend to future campers as the table is a bit small. This is a gem of a site, we loved every minute there and we will be back! Highly recommend!

Where to go
Henry W. Coe State Park
Encompassing over 87,000 acres of hillsides and mountain ridges, Henry W. Coe State Park is the largest state park in northern California. It offers a rich natural display, particularly in spring when the wildflowers bloom and blanket the fields. Campers can trek through more than 250 miles of hiking trails and ranch roads to take in views of the area. The park also hosts fishing spots for anglers and horseback riding trails for equestrians. Along with rugged backcountry camping, there is one on-site developed campground outfitted with 20 drive-in campsites. Each site has a fire pit, picnic table, and access to vault toilets and potable water nearby.
Sierra National Forest
An hour and a half east from Los Banos is the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Sierra National Forest presents a diverse habitat comprising five wilderness areas, two nationally designated scenic rivers, and three nationally designated trails. The forest is also known for its incredible mountain vistas and pristine lakes that offer fishing opportunities. In winter, campers can snowmobile, cross-country ski, or downhill ski and snowboard on forest hills, as well. Then, spend the night at one of the campgrounds at Bass Lake, Merced River, Rock Creek, or High Sierra.
Pinnacles National Park
Pinnacles National Park is the result of massive volcanic and geologic activity millions of years ago. It now includes diverse biomes of chaparral, canyon bottoms, and oak woodlands. Hike over 30-miles of trails that travel through talus caves, over rocky spires, and across stretches of wildflower-covered grasslands. Or rock climb among local birdlife including California condors and acorn woodpeckers. Pinnacles Campground offers several campsites for tents and RVs with fire rings and picnic tables as well as water, flush toilets, coin-op showers, and even a swimming pool (April to October). Most RV sites have electrical hookups and nearby dump stations, as well.
When to go
Los Banos features year-round camping fun for the entire family. Summer months, particularly holiday weekends, are popular times to visit. July is historically the hottest month with an average high of 92°F. December is considered the coldest month with average lows of 38°F. While winter might be offseason to some, the nearby Sierra Nevadas and Sierra National Forest are favorites among campers who enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities.
