This is great option for those who like to bring all their own gear to camp, and don’t need or want all the extras. Our new Primitive Adventures campsites are located on an established 5-star property. It’s a peaceful, secluded and private country estate. The 20 acre property starts out flat and then gentle to moderate sloped hillside with coastal live oak trees, eucalyptus trees, pine trees, meadows and many interesting landscape features nestled between the vast farmlands of North Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties.
We are 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The weather is usually mild here and we have cool evenings. We do get days that are in the 90s sometimes in the summer and early fall, but we also have lots of shade with all the trees. There is wildlife like deer, turkeys and owls and so much more. We have horses and a donkey, separate from the campsites, so no flies or smell from them. We provide one hot water shower and there are 3 outhouse style toilets on the grounds.
There is NO running water at the sites so we suggest you bring your own drinking water. There will be limited water provided for hand/dish washing.
We are a pack it in/pack it out campground so please, be mindful of waste as we ask that you take it out with you. We do not have dumpsters/trash service on site so please be mindful of this when packing and booking.
You may forage for plentiful eucalyptus and oak firewood for free, or pre-cut pine is available for purchase. Most of our weekends are fully booked at our Rustic Campsites already, so here is another chance to have yourself a weekend camping trip at our new Primitive Adventures campsites. The L3 Ranch was founded in 1974 when my grandfather bought the property for his show cows. In 1978, someone gave him a racehorse to pay off a debt. From then on, the property was known for its Quarter horse race horses, with some of the best in the state being born right here. In 2013 he found our he had cancer and handed the ranch down to me, Travis. While he survived the cancer, he's happy in retirement playing cards with his buddies every week and hanging out with his dog.Now the ranch is known for its horse boarding, cattle, and goats. We are here in Gilroy Ca, on a rural 2 acres just outside of town, further up our road is Coyote Lake to go boating and fishing and Harvey Bear park to go hiking and horse riding. Santa Cruz is a 45 min drive West over hwy 152 and San Jose is 30 min North on 101 and keep going a bit more and you will be in San Francisco.
Here at home we raise several different kinds of lives stock. Goats for meat and milk, Sheep for meat and wool and eventually milk, Pigs for meat, Rabbits for meat and hide, Chickens, Ducks and Quail for meat and eggs. We have a garden and small orchard with nearly a dozen fruit trees of different kinds : loquat, a few apples, plums, apricot, peach, fig, persimmons and my favorite the pomegranate! We process everything ourselves using ancestral techniques and love to share and learn with others.
Id say the main draw back here is the traffic noise but beyond that, We are quite lucky to have very a green and Id say an oasis of a property, with multiple large palms trees surrounding the pool area and a large weeping willow tree in the main yard/sheep pasture. At the NE corner of the property is a very large oak tree, it is majestic and with the tipi door open to the East the big oak is the first thing you'll see every morning besides the suns rays!
The entire Northern property line is rowed with 60ft tall redwood trees and there are a smattering of citrus trees around to boot!
The freezer is stocked with in house meat, the BBQ is hot, the pool is cool, come relax after a day on the trails!

The site was really clean and well kept, easy to back into, and the power and water were in good working order. It was a quiet area with nice big trees and some shade, which was exactly what I needed. Brian, the host, brought us some cow treats to feed to the adorable cows, which we thought was a nice touch. The area is remote ranch land and I recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle with good ground clearance. It is surrounded by cattle and horse ranches.
Being so remote the stars are amazing and there is wildlife (deer, rabbits, coyote, cows, hawks) to see. (And we heard a cougar so I recommend being armed)
The night sky is amazing with very little light pollution.
There are no clearly defined camp spots, just some chairs under a tree and none of the ground is level. There is cow manure everywhere so... thankfully we didnt sleep on the ground.
If you dont mind the hour drive from Pinnacles national park then its a great spot to be alone.

This tiny 5-site camping area is unique in that it is surrounded by vineyards and reached through a gate (code provided to guests) then a very narrow private road. It is an adventure just getting there.
It was very hot when I stayed, 98° F (37° Celsius), which probably explains why I was the only camper. The host, Phil, came by to greet me and answer questions soon after I arrived. The temperature dropped as the sun neared the horizon and I enjoyed walking around a bit, wandering through the grounds of the adjacent inn.
The campsites are just level places to park, my van was perfect. It was very quiet and nobody came near me. The peacefulness and privacy was just what I wanted.
This campsite is located halfway up the Gabilan Range, between the Salinas Valley and Pinnacles National Park. Some of the Pinnacles are in view, but the real view is of the Chalone Peaks (within the park) in one direction and the Sierra de Salinas in the other. There was fog in the valley below and a clear sky at sunset. I plan to go back, to experience a different season, maybe harvest time.

We took our RV out for a quick one-day trip and had a wonderful time. The spot was incredibly clean, peaceful, and beautifully shaded. The cows on the property were absolutely adorable and so friendly! It’s also in a great location—only about 35 minutes from Sunset Beach. Huge shoutout to the owner, Brian, who was amazing and made sure we had everything we needed. Highly recommend!

There are very few, if any, places to stay on the west entrance of The Pinnacles and driving to the east gate where the campground is located takes about an hour. A stay in this vineyard is a perfect t solution and would be a top pick even if there were several options. We left the trails and were at our site within 10 minutes just in time to watch the sun set over the mountains. Choose sites 1&2 for sunrise over the vineyards or 3&4 for sunset over the hills. Enjoy!

By far the best car camping experience we have ever had. Kristine and the entire team were fabulous - extremely responsive with great instructions before arriving and so genuinely friendly once we arrived. The property is literally minutes from the west gate of pinnacles (unheard of given how remote the park is), and feels like you are already in the park. Vineyards one direction and the mountains and pinnacles the other - we saw four outstanding sunrises/sunsets in just two days. We walked the vineyards and got to learn about the history of the winery from the owners and staff who were on site while we were there - all were incredibly kind and welcomed us like family. We can’t wait to go back and will be recommending this to all of our friends!
