2 nights at The Castle House: Estate

Perfect spot to stay when visiting Joshua Tree National Park. We tent camped in site #2 and had a nice area in the back corner. The property was very clean and well taken care of. They had food service also and we were able to order pizzas and they brought them to us. The bathrooms were just a short walk across the property and the outdoor shower with hot water was amazing!

Tao has a lovely spot very close to Joshua Tree National Park. We stayed 2 nights. The day we stayed on the property we enjoyed bird watching and hiking up the mountain behind his place for spectacular views. We cooled off in the pool during the day and enjoyed stargazing in the hot tub at night. The road in is bumpy but fine if you are prepared. We came in late at night and originally missed our turn to the exact camp spot b/c the sign had blown down, but it was easy to turn around and figure it out via Google Earth imagery/Taos instructions. There are a few other airB&B's on the property and kitchen is communal. We were off grid so didn't utilize this but it was nice to fill up water bottles at the tap. A nice basecamp for anything in the surrounding area. Tao was very responsive via text.

1 night at Villa Macala

The hip camp at Macala Orchard was more than we could have imagined. The staff was amazingly hospitable, from the tour upon arrival, to the attention to detail for our accommodations, we were delighted. Our family enjoyed the views, the knowledge gained about the orchard/vineyard from David, the kindnesses extended to us and getting to purchase the award winning olive oil and jam, bringing a piece of it back home with us. The family was easy to work with and we would do it again in a heartbeat!

Weekend Trip to Camp Deb's Place

We spent two nights at Deb’s campsite and had such a wonderful experience. The space is incredibly well set up with thoughtful touches throughout. The kitchen had everything we needed—from a hot stove and burners to utensils, plates, a fridge, and even tea. It was so convenient being able to buy firewood right there on-site too. The bathrooms and showers were clean and easy to use, and the whole place felt comfortable and welcoming. There were plenty of games and activities for the kids, which made a huge difference for our family. Deb clearly put a lot of heart into creating a space that feels both relaxing and functional. Truly a beautiful stay—thank you, Deb!

Deb’s Place is hands-down one of the most welcoming and unique camping spots we’ve ever visited. From the moment we arrived, Ms. Deb made us feel like family—checking in on guests, offering help to those who may have forgotten stakes or weren’t ready for a windy night. The setup is incredible. There’s a fully stocked community kitchen with hotplates, an air fryer, toaster oven, fridge, and plenty of seating to hang out with fellow travelers. It’s just a few miles from the Joshua Tree Visitor Center, making it the perfect base for your desert adventure. Not a tent camper? No problem. Deb has transformed vintage school buses into cozy little retreats complete with beds, seating, and Big Buddy heaters—perfect for staying warm while still enjoying the outdoors. The outhouse is surprisingly charming, filled with quirky memorabilia, but fully equipped with a flush toilet, running water, and thoughtful touches. The shower is private, clean, and even stocked with fresh towels. When the desert chill rolls in, you’ll love the coffee and hot chocolate hut—and if you need to reconnect, there’s a cozy WiFi/charging room too. Deb is truly the heart of this place, and it shows in every detail. We’re already planning our next trip and can’t wait to return!

Weekend Trip to Villa Macala

We just returned from the most wonderful weekend celebrating our now 7-year-old son's birthday at Villa Macala! The property is so peaceful and beautiful -- boulders, olive and pomegranate orchards, wildflowers (in late April), hummingbirds, blue birds, etc. Our hosts were so friendly, inviting, and helpful, and we loved their pomegranate juice, fruit jams, and tea. The brand new bathhouse, just a moment up the path from our site, was clean and full of soaps and other supplies. We'll be back, for sure, and highly recommend the property (Site 1 - Elderberry Park) in particular for those who want to tent camp.

Our stay was incredible! We stayed on the camp sites. The area is well equipped with an amazing jacuzzi, pool, sauna, bathrooms, and showers. There is a drive-in movie just a few minutes away that I would recommend checking out after a day of hiking/climbing in Joshua Tree.

Campsite #2 was great! The structure helped a lot, both with protection from the sun and wind. Because it was tucked into the back corner of the property, and away from the restrooms and pool, it felt more private. Highly recommend it for a unique camping experience!

What do Black Rock, White Tank, Indian Cove, and Jumbo Rocks have in common? They’re all stellar campgrounds beneath the starry night sky in Joshua Tree National Park. (Well, there’s Ryan and Belle campground too, but that didn’t flow as well.)

This magnificent patch of Southern California desert has its main entrance in Twentynine Palms. The 800,000-acre Joshua Tree makes it easy for campers to explore the vast, boulder-laden land. It offers nine campgrounds and nearly 500 sites, all with picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. Half are first-come, first-served, half are reservation only.

If it’s solitude you seek, pitch your tent beneath the massive boulder formations at Belle Campground. With just 18 sites, it’s one of the smaller campgrounds here. Title of smallest goes to White Tank Campground with 15 sites. White Tank puts you next to the 0.5-mile Arch Rock Nature Trail for some easy hiking and wildflower viewing.

Rock climbers hang out at the in-demand, 44-site Hidden Valley campground. Its close proximity to the otherworldly Wonderland of Rocks makes this a difficult campground to score. The 99-site Black Rock campground owes its popularity to the rare presence of running water. If you need flush toilets and some especially dramatic Joshua trees to admire, sleep here.

Summers are brutally hot, and winters can be freezing here. Prime Joshua Tree camping months are March, April, October, and November. Bring your own water and firewood (and a horse if you’re headed to Black Rock and Ryan Campgrounds.)
