Weekend Trip to Freedog Farms @ Cactus Flower Ranch

What Sierra and Darin have created with Free Dog is special, it's hard to describe just one thing about the place. From the moment we arrived, my group of 3 felt so welcome and like we were part of a bigger community. We had a great time learning about local beers from Darin, we toured the beautiful property together and they helped us pick a spot that was serene, private, and just beautiful to have a cup of coffee during sunrise or a glass of wine at sunset. It's also conveniently close to Solvang so go check out a winery or enjoy Solvang Restaurant. Thank you for making my birthday weekend so special. I will be back!! Shoutout to Jeremy for being an amazing property manager and for making us laugh!

Weekend Trip to Camp Arroyo Grande

Cute little cabins, hot hot hot showers and a very laid-back vibe. Only cons are the cabins very limited and easily overwhelmed power supply and outlets. Power fell out a couple of times and luckily we figured it out quickly or it would have really affected our trip. Nights have been in the 40's, so I'd bring extra warm blankets if you plan on staying in summer weather.

Weekend Trip to Rancho Rio Del Sol: Paso Robles, CA

Our weekend stay at the Dream Catcher Vintage Trailer was excellent! All the amenities were perfect for a couple of boondockers looking for a more luxurious and peaceful stay while exploring Paso Robles and Highway 1. The trailer is a great size for 2 humans and a dog and provides enough space to hunker down and relax even when it is drizzling a little bit. Outdoor tub is AWESOME; easy to fill and the cast iron tub keeps the water hot for so long. Everything, property, trailer, shower/bathroom is super clean and well taken care of, and we experienced zero issues during the 2 day visit. Highly recommend for anyone who's looking for a unique trailer camping experience, without the boring, modern RV style and a beautiful property to relax on.

Weekend Trip to Freedog Farms @ Cactus Flower Ranch

We camped up on the hill and the views were amazing. Not many camping that weekend and it was like we had the whole area to ourselves. Our dogs loved the open space to chase balls and explore. Darin and Sierra were very nice and welcoming and insured we knew where we were going, great hosts. A couple of use did beer tasting off the tap with Darin and hung out by the fire with other campers. Overall, a great experience and all of us voted to come back for a multiple night stay.

Weekend Trip to Cuyama Oaks Ranch

Nate & Rickie are amazing hosts. They have put a lot of energy, care and flair into their Hipcamp for others to enjoy. The scenery and landscape are gorgeous. We loved the songbirds, yapping goats, and other chatty animals. The sites are spread apart and overall the land/place has a wonderful vibe.

Camp AG was beautiful and peaceful. We camped in the cabins with our 6 dogs and they absolutely loved it.

This beautiful site has comfortable beds and clean facilities at great budget-friendly nightly rates. It's also a short drive to stores and beautiful sightseeing spots along the central coast, such as Grover Beach, Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, and Cambria. We had a great family trip!

1 night at Gaia Farm Campground

Nestled in the mid-range of the Santa Ynez mountains, Amanda and her family’s land provides incredible views of the expansive lower range and the coast when looking forward and down, and the comforting upper range when looking up and behind. The pictures simply don’t so it justice. It truly does feel like you’re up in the sky… maybe because you are! We stayed in the Sky Yurt, situated about a quarter mile away from their family’s home. It feels private but safe knowing that they are nearby if anything were to happen. The yurt itself is quite cozy. It was very, very windy at night, but inside the yurt, there was nothing to worry about. The walls are sturdy and insulated. It is quite spacious with plenty of room and a battery-powered lamp for activities and games. Our recommendation is to bring a lantern or two if you need more light to read or draw or play games. There is a propane camping stove for cooking, and Amanda generously provides pots, pans, dishes, and silverware. There is also a stovetop espresso maker and mugs for coffee in the morning. If you want to keep perishable food cold, we also recommend you bring a cooler. Amanda and her family are fantastic hosts that serve to inspire those who stay at this wonderful farm. It would be such a pleasant, joyous life if we were one day able to buy a property like this one and live with our family — a refreshing visualization of the good times that could lie ahead. Great way to spend my 25th birthday!

Weekend Trip to Gaia Farm Campground

This place is gorgeous, beautiful winding roads up the mountains lead to mountaintop camp sites with a gorgeous view. We were there in April, so it can get pretty chilly with the wind at night but that was only one night. WE just brought some layers and hung out in the tent that evening. Host is super lovely and attentive and happily dealt with us being a little chaotic. Awesome overall!

Our property consists of: 43 rugged/hilly/mountainous acre with numerous flat plateaus and fantastic views. Each plateau has several great spots to car/van/truck camp, pitch a tent or park small trailers and small RVs. Larger RVs/Trailers fit on the front side of our property. SUMMER/FALL: Expect the landscape and views to be golden brown (not green and lush like in a lot of the photos posted which were taken this past winter/spring.) All of our sites are spread out with plenty of space for social distancing. DRY CAMPING: All of our sites are DRY camping (no water/electricity.) We provide a picnic table and one umbrella and a propane fire pit with a propane tank. Please bring additional shade structures if you think you’ll need more shade. Our best sites, with little-to-no traffic noise, (and the best views) are on our back property. Best suited for tents, camper vans, trucks, and SMALL trailers or SMALL RVs. There is a semi-steep hill up to our upper property if you're towing a trailer you will need a powerful vehicle to make it up the hill. Sites on our lower property by the common area are easily accessible with views up the hills/mountains but come with some highway noise. We imagine it sounds like waves crashing and call it the "steel river." For your private camp area, please bring your own drinking water, water to wash dishes and if think you'll need: chairs, camp tables, umbrellas or shade structures, trash bags/cans (throw your trash in the dumpster out side our entry gate when you leave. Plan on being fully self-sufficient. Otherwise, feel free to use the common area BBQ, Sink, tables and chairs at the barn until 10 pm. MOST DOGS WELCOMED... WE PROHIBIT UN-neutered aggressive breed dogs. DOGS ARE FREE TO RUN UNLEASHED ALL OVER OUR LAND. The front of our property is all. Fenced. The back property just has barbed wire. ABOUT OUR DOGS: We have one female dog and three male dogs (one of the three is UN-NEUTERED) a 10-year-old yellow lab (Titan-Dan.) A 14-year-old American Dingo (Reno.) 5-year-old Great Pyrenees (Bandit.) And then there is Cannoli a 7-year-old female Great Pyrenees who adopted us we saw her come through the bushes from the neighbors property across the highway… She ran across the highway and jumped the medium and ran up to our gate, she hasn’t left since… COMMON USE AREA: Inside and near the barn include tables, chairs, hammocks, wood fire pit, outdoor propane BBQ and stove, wash sink and outdoor mineral shower, and mineral cold plunge tubs. FIRE SAFETY and PROPANE FIREPITS: We have “very safe” propane firepits and fire extinguishers at every site. Under the right conditions, we will light a real wood fire at the common area by the barn. Feel free to join us in the early evening until 10pm. PORTA-POTTIES: We have porta-potties next to the Barn, the Garden, Running Dog Flats, and the Art Studio. They are pumped clean every Thursday and are generally very lightly used. If you don’t want to use the porta-potties we recommend/encourage you to bring your own camp toilet, bags, and absorbent. WILDLIFE: Our dogs do a great job of fending off the resident bobcat and coyotes on the front portion of our property and by the barn, if they are barking in the night there's a reason. If you end up camping on the front portion of our property and think their barking will affect your sleep, bring earplugs ;-). Drinking-WATER, Dish Washing Water and Shade: All of our sites are dry camping i.e. there is no potable water available. Please bring all your own drinking/dishwashing water. We have a picnic table and 1 umbrella at all the sites. Please bring additional shade i.e. easy up or other shade structures if you think you'll need it. Cold Mineral Dunks and Hot Outdoor Mineral Shower: We have huge aluminum cowboy cold dunk tubs available at what we lovingly/jokingly refer to as our very own “Cactus Flower Beach,” which is not a real beach… It feels like a beach because we’ve decked it out with lounge chairs, a daybed cabana, 150K pounds of sand and tiki-hut umbrellas. It’s fun to hang out there when it’s hot under the shade of the pepper trees. NOTE: The Outdoor Shower screening is a tad see-through. If you are shy, wear a bathing suit. Please limit showers to 3-5 minutes max. Mineral Water Definition: Water from a mineral spring or well (i.e. our well) that contains various minerals, such as salts and sulfur compounds. TRASH: Please pack all your trash out to the large trash bin located at the entrance to our property. Please take your recycling with you. ELECTRICITY and Wi-Fi: We have charging stations in the barn for your computers, phones, etc. Password: HowdyDoody (Accessible in and near the barn common area.) COMMISSARY: We have farm fresh eggs and meats from the pork palace across the street, and other swag i.e Hats for sale in the barn. FEED THE CHICKENS AND GOATS: Please feel free to feed the goats and chickens your vegetable scraps and or bring them a treat they love full heads of cabbage, lettuce, cantaloupe and watermelon. CHILDREN: For safety, children must be always accompanied by an adult! On a drive one weekend a few years back, we started talking about what we wanted to do when we retired...after some really outlandish and ridiculous ideas, Evan said "I've always wanted to have some land and a few sheep"...and so the dream began! After much conversation, we decided we didn't want to wait until we retired to turn our dream into a reality, so I got a new job, we packed up the storage unit, and moved to Paso Robles, CA with only a dream and a whole lot of hope! As all things that are meant to be go, our farm was listed the day we moved to town, two days later we put a contact on it, and the rest is history. A little bit about me: I am a city girl, born and raised in Baltimore Maryland. Until just 4 years ago, I worked as a radiation therapist, treating cancer patients. Since moving to Paso, I work on the vendor side of cancer care, which has allowed me to live here! I get lots of compliments on my scones, I help my husband make cheese, and apparently I'm the chicken and duck whisperer on the farm! A little about Evan: Evan is also from Maryland, and that's where we met. He is a professional photographer, getting his start as a freelance photojournalist. Ev moved into the event side of photography, shooting primarily weddings, and did so for many years. Once we decided to pursue the dream of being sheep farmers/cheese makers/inn keepers he hung up his cameras (at least professionally) and focuses his attention on the well being of our animals, as well as being the primary cheese maker! When Evan is not helping me check in guests, taking care of the farm/animals or making cheese, he works in the wine industry, at a local winery called Villicana. When you are staying with us, we hope to provide a relaxing enjoyable experience that allows you to escape from everyday life.
