Camp Blackbird

2 sites ¡ RVs, Tents28 acres ¡ Lehighton, PA
Camp Blackbird is a 28 acre property that runs along Beltzville State Park in Carbon County, PA. So besides the camp, there is an additional 3,002-acres of state park to explore. There are a total of 2 sites. The land was vacant for decades and unfortunately used to dump household garbage during that time. We cleaned up the land, built a home and bat habitat. We, Sarah and Stein, always disliked renting a camp site somewhere and then ending up on top of people. So it was our goal to make space on our land for campers like us that want to be surrounded by nature, not other camp sites. A portion of the proceeds from your stay will be donated to bat habitat conservation and bat sanctuaries around the world. We are grateful for the hundreds of campers that have stayed with us. Thank you to all of you that have left a clean site and not made unnecessary noise that would disturb the countless species that share the forest with us. Also, Thank You for patronizing local businesses while you are here. We'll give you a map so you can see where to take a short walk to get to the lake. There are miles of hiking trails a few minutes walk from your campsite. Beltzville Lake is a great place for paddling. The boat launch is just a few minutes drive from Camp. In addition to the beautiful immediate surroundings, we are centrally located near many exciting destinations. Year round activities at Blue Mountain Resort, adventure on The Appalachian Trail, fine dining, biking the rail trail and whitewater rafting in Jim Thorpe, all within a 25 minute drive. The property is not suitable for parties or events. The area is a QUIET ZONE. Ideal for people looking to unplug from it all and become one with nature. It is teaming with wildlife and is ideal for birding. The hosts mission is to disturb wildlife and its habitats as little as possible. VERY IMPORTANT - NO PARTIES or unregistered guests on the property. There are other campgrounds in the area that are great for people who want to party. We welcome pets. Please add your photos! Especially of your dog camping! Check out the 300+ photos past campers have added. So many of them are dogs camping it up. We, the hosts, live on the property about 700 ft from the campsite. We try to have minimal interactions with the guests to ensure privacy and personal space but we're always reachable.

The best camping near Hickory Run State Park guide

Overview

About

Less than a 2-hour drive from Philadelphia, Hickory Run State Park is a popular recreation area throughout the year. Summer activities include disc golf, biking, and exploring the boulder-covered Boulder Field (a National Natural Landmark), while cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular in winter. The park is also great for hiking with 40 miles of trails, including the popular Hawk Falls Trail, which leads to a 25-foot waterfall, and the Shades of Death Trail, which gives hikers access to a mic of waterfalls and dams. Hickory Run Park Campground features a variety of tent and RV sites, some with full hookups, plus picnic tables, fire rings, and flush toilets.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. You can reserve a spot at Hickory Run State Park by calling Pennsylvania State Parks or via their website.
  2. Reservations for campsites, cabins, and cottages open 11 months in advance and remain open until noon on the date of arrival.
  3. Unreserved sites are made available on a first-come, first-served basis and are released at noon when advance reservations close. Arrive in the early afternoon to increase your chances of snagging a spot.
  4. The park has two group cabin camping areas and 13 group tenting sites. These are usually used by scouts and other groups, and can be reserved directly through the park office.

When to go

Hickory Run State Park is open throughout the year, but most visitors come from spring through early fall. During this period, parking lots for day-use visitors often fill up early, even on weekdays, so it’s wise to arrive as early as you can. Camping is available from the second Friday in April until the middle of December. The dump station and other facilities that use water close for the year on the third Sunday in October.

Know before you go

  • You can pick up food, firewood, ice, and basic supplies at the on-site camp store or by driving to the town of Albrightsville, a 10-minute drive away.
  • Alcohol is prohibited at Hickory Run and at all other Pennsylvania state parks.
  • Hickory Run is in bear country, so campers must keep all food, toiletries, and cooking supplies in bear-safe areas. Garbage should be thrown in designated bear-proof dumpsters.
