Hervey Bay (pronounced Harvey) is best known as the gateway to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island (K’gari), less than an hour’s ferry ride away. It’s also one of Australia’s most popular whale-watching destinations, for the passing parade of Humpback whales that visit annually. Campers can find all they need in equipment and supplies in the town, and then choose between big-name commercial camping and caravan parks and smaller, non-commercial camping grounds around the Fraser Coast. Some of the best are in Wongai State Forest, where you can camp near picturesque waterholes. Kayaking and canoeing is popular, and there are easy walking trails.The world’s largest sand island, Fraser Island (K’gari) is popular with campers, hikers and fishermen, but can only be accessed by 4WD vehicle or on foot. Sandy tracks criss-cross the island. As well as beach camping, there are protected camping sites behind fences to keep out wild dingos, recommended for families with children under 14. Don’t-miss spots include the crystal-clear Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek and the lush rainforest of Central Station.About 90 minutes’ drive north is the sugar milling town of Bundaberg, where nature lovers flock in summer to witness the turtle nesting season at the largest rookery in the Southern Hemisphere, on the beach at Mon Repos. Bush and coastal camping spots abound, a mix of commercial operations and council-run campgrounds. One of these is Norval Park Campground, close to the ocean but with no facilities, open to tents and trailers only (a permit is needed).Glamping is the only camping option on Lady Elliot, one of the Great Barrier Reef’s most remote inhabited islands. Access to the island is by air only, booked through Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort, from Hervey Bay or Bundaberg. Tents are close to the lagoon and each has a deck where you can watch nesting seabirds and turtles (in season). Less expensive cabin accommodation is available. The highlights are snorkelling off the beach, 20 dive sites, and Manta Ray (best in winter).

Rosgrow Farm, 15 minutes off the Bruce Highway, offers secluded campsites set on a large tidal creek. There are plenty of trees and shelter. The creek offers fishing, crabbing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, boating and swimming. Campers must be self-contained with their own toilet and shower and need to remove their rubbish. Particularly suitable for RVs and caravans with own toilet. Well suited for overnight travelers passing between Maryborough and Bundaberg, or others needing a few days rest, fishing or water activities. Sandflies are a problem in this region anywhere near water, in the mornings until about 9am and in the evenings after about 3:30pm, so bring plenty of repellent and apply early and often. Sites are 30-40 metres apart with a maximum of 8 vehicles and their occupants in the whole property. No overcrowding! Looking for a special breakfast or brunch? Try Goody’s on the Beach, a 3-minute drive away at Toogoom for great waterside dining or Arkarra Gardens, 10 minutes away for a tropical rainforest dining experience. Pricing: Basic booking is for a vehicle with caravan, or an RV, and 2 people. Peaceful 5 acres lots of trees on one half , cleared on the other with a huge dam, with lily pads a wharf, great place to chill back ,watch all the wild birds, ducks, cockatoos, hen birds, spoon bill birds, whistling ducks, Galahs, Rosella's, rainbow lorikeets, king parrots, Magpie Geese, Kangaroos, Goanna. We also have sheep, goats , chickens, turkeys, which the kids can feed in the afternoons. We are only 5 mins away from the Ferry to Fraser Island, 10 mins to Hervey Bay, with its Esplanade , bike, & walking trails, also there is dog friendly beach's. Great place to stop, and rest before Fraser Island, we are dog friendly, but must be kept on leash at all times. We have power available if needed, but that is $10 extra a night in cash paid to us. It was an amazing spot for our Caravan but there is also many other sites for all kinds of camping all just as great. The camp kitchen area was enormous with a well equiped kitchen, beyond expectations. Bathrooms were extremely clean and the showers had great water pressure. It was so quiet and peaceful the whole 4 nights we were there. The highlight of my stay was feeding the 2 Donkeys, 2 Miniature Horses and Horse carrots every afternoon.

Loved our stay at River Run, lovely rustic, all working facilities. The river was great for a cool off as it was very hot when we were there. Thanks Shelly for our upgrade to power, helped our old dog immensely having the air-conditioning. Would recommend this camp to all!!

Lovely peaceful campsite. Amazing views to k'gari island. Great location for travelling to Hervey Bay for trips to k'gari island. Heidi provides home made food and we had the vegetarian quiche and salad, delicious, and the quiche was sufficient to be our lunch the day after. Would definitely recommend this campsite.

The views were amazing, the owner was fantastic. Answered all questions and took the kids and us on an included farm animal and feeding tour! The facilities were beautiful the bath under the stars for the kids was awesome and the camp kitchen being so user friendly and has everything you need. The bar area/dining area of the camp kitchen is accommodating and very spacious with a playground for the kids outside. We loved our site and will come back many times in the future. The boat ramp was awesome for us as well and when not boating an awesome spot for a dip in the water !

They really catered for kids & adults with activities for Australia Day. Amenities were always clean, good water pressure & great hot water. Camp kitchen was a great size with everything you want. On the down side considering the length of waterfront the boat ramp was the only accessible area. powered sites had no shade at all, they would be good for winter camping not Summer.

When to go

Book well ahead at any time of year, especially for camping on Fraser Island. During whale-watching season (August to October), the region is busy. The best weather is in Spring (September to November), when there is little rain and the summer humidity hasn’t kicked in yet.

Know before you go

Allow at least three days to explore Fraser Island.
On Fraser Island, it is illegal to feed or interact with dingos (wild dogs), which have been responsible for fatal attacks on visitors. Heavy fines apply.
Whale watching season in Hervey Bay runs from August to October.
Camping permits are required for all Queensland National Parks, forests and reserves and must be booked online and paid for before arrival.
