Ultra private secluded island paradise located on lovely Madeline Island with 300 feet of lakeshore and stunning views of the coveted North Channel. Seven of the 22 Apostle Islands are in view on a clear day and not one electric light is visible from the property at night. Enjoy dramatic fog while you sip your morning coffee, frequent sailboat regattas during the day, and stunning double sunsets as they reflect across over 5 miles of open water. (ps. this reflective effect is also in play for the northern lights if you're lucky) Amenities: ZERO! Well, other than two fire pits and a propane grill (BYO propane if you want to use that) Expect a lumpy lawn with space for up to 8 tents located right on top of a 100 foot cliff leading straight down to lake superior. If needed, showers, bathrooms, etc. are located 1.2 miles away at Big Bay Town Park. (no entry fee required) There you can also find the best beach on the island and canoes for rent if you'd like to explore the massive lagoon behind it chalk full of fish. Pack in, pack out. Enjoy!

Experience upscale camping–Glamping in the Forested Hills of Lake Superior. Sailor Springs is a small three-site campground located just two miles outside of the picturesque tourist town of Bayfield, WI. 2023 will be our first year of operation and we’re excited to host campers on the property and provide a unique camping experience. The campground is spread out over 5 acres of forest that you’ll hike into from Bresette Hill Road. After parking at the trailhead, you’ll gather your bags and hike into your glamping site. The trail winds through the woods, leading you first to a valley where the seasonal Clark Creek runs through in the spring. The first two campsites are on the other side of this valley. The trail can be steep in spots and requires a moderate level of fitness and mobility to reach the secluded campsites. The third site is a bit farther into the forest, the little A-frame cabin, Anchor sits on the edge of the spring-fed Brickyard Creek that flows year-round. We have many plans for the property and depending on when you stay, the campground will be in various stages of development. The campsites, trailhead / parking area, and trails are scheduled to be completed in early spring. We hope to add amenities such as a camp sauna and screened-in gazebo later in the 2024 summer / fall. Thank you for considering joining us on this journey to build a peaceful place to play and stay in the woods. “In every walk in nature one receives far more than he seeks.” John Muir

Hi there! We have 5 yurts spread across our 40 acres with each yurt having lots of individual space and privacy. We hand built our yurts from scratch using wood from our land and local lumber, as well as sewing all the vinyl ourselves. The yurts are almost completely locally sourced, everything was handmade by us, and sustainably sourced. We are really excited to share the land we love with folks from near and far. Your yurt is equipped with a full sized futon, two burner stove kitchen with all cooking appliances and utensils, 2 gallons of fresh drinking water (as well as oil, salt, pep, coffee, and tea all provided), a small dining table with chairs, and an outdoor fire pit. A short 7 min drive from our property is beautiful Little Sand Bay beach. This free, public use National Park beach is gorgeous with views of Sand and York Islands, great swimming spots, $2.00 hot showers, and kayak launch. Important things to note about your yurt site! The access to our property is via a long dirt road, this road is accessible for all vehicles but it is about a 2min drive through the woods to get to the yurt sites. Once you arrive on the property your yurt is a 2-4min (depending on which yurt you choose) hike up a hill from the parking area. I recommend backpacking in your items. Wheely coolers and bags will not enjoy the terrain. The Portapotty is located at the parking area as well. That being said, a little bit of walking will be involved in your stay :) If you love walking you are in luck and can explore the trails on the property!

My husband Rob and I own a 40 acre property approximately 10 miles from Bayfield, Wi. We have a micro organic farm with hundreds of wild apple trees and believe in leaving the land better than we found it. Rob loves permaculture, managing soils, pruning apple trees and feeding his community nutrient dense food. I work as a hospice nurse and help out on the farm when I am able and we have 2 boys, Arlo and Owen. We keep busy! We offer 3 rustic rentals onsite, but each is very private and secluded. Consider all 3 for a larger gathering! We look forward to hosting you for a farm visit.

On the upper Bad River, I have a special location that I'd like to share for others to enjoy. I was fortunate to acquire this land 20 years ago and now that I have retired from the United States Air Force, I can dedicate time to create peaceful campsites along the river. This land was originally railroad property as the railroad companies bought much land in the late 1800's to have options to place their railroads. There is still a railroad track nearby but it has been unused since 2015 and it makes a nice hiking path along the river for many miles to the north into the national forest. There are 3 waterfalls nearby and I will have many signs leading to the waterfalls. There are 4 total campsites on the property, 1 site you can drive to (Eagle Pines), and 3 tent sites that require 1/8 mile hike to 2 sites, and a 1/4 mile hike to the other hike-in site. There is no leash required for good pups. If your pup is aggressive with other dogs or people please leash them when on the hiking trails. If your pups would stay in your campsite no leash is required. Other campers may be hiking past your campsite on the trails that is still over 100 feet away from others campsites. You may run into others on the trails where others dogs may not be leashed. If your dog is aggressive to other dogs even if yours is on leash if you can’t control them please muzzle them. This property is for sale if you may be interested. Please ask and I’ll send you the details.

Located just down from Bayview Beach, our property sits nestled between Lake Superior and the Onion River, which runs through the property just behind the cabin. You will have a private beach on Lake Superior all to yourself. While neighbors may be around from time to time, especially on weekends, you will not have to share anything but the sound of waves hitting the shore and birds chirping as the sun sets in the west. You can set up a tent by the cabin or on the beach side in the grass or sand areas—or even on the beach itself if you'd like to catch a sunrise. There is also room for an RV, teardrop trailer, or camper van, if that's what you'd like to bring. A fire ring and firewood are provided, along with some chairs. Kayaks are available upon request, but you are responsible for safe operation and for understanding when weather conditions are not suitable for their use. At this time, the cabin is not included or open for use, nor is there power available for outside hookups. There is no running water (besides the river and Lake Superior), and no toilets on site. However, you will pass public toilets on your way in—they are roughly 90 seconds away by car. Otherwise, you are responsible for bringing a camp toilet. Pets are welcome but must be leashed when others are around and well-behaved. Please dispose of waste properly and respect the natural surroundings. We've had this property since my siblings and I were kids, so please be respectful of the property and neighbors and treat others as you would like to be treated in return. You should not be bothered by anyone. Please practice pack-in/pack-out and clean up after yourselves. Beyond that, nearby attractions include the city of Bayfield and the Apostle Islands, a short 15-minute drive away. Welcome to Happy Creek Hollow, previously called Camp Blue Rock, your cozy hideaway in the north woods! We’re thrilled to share our little slice of heaven—30 private acres perfect for makin’ unforgettable memories. There’s now a small cabin on the property (not available for rent), but the campsite remains open for camping with your travel trailer or tent. We’ve spruced up the site to make your campin’ experience even comfier. Got questions before ya book? Just holler—I’d love to chat! Your campsite is a one-of-a-kind retreat, surrounded by wild, untouched woods with no neighbors in sight. Close to the road but tucked away private-like, you’ll have the whole 30 acres to yourself. There’s plenty of room for tents or a camper. There is a small pond in the campsite area (great frog catching says my 7-year-old). Spend your days trompin’ through the trees, sittin’ ‘round the campfire, or explorin’ the Penokee Mountain range’s rugged beauty. For the adventurous, a private trail leads to Happy Creek Flowage, a 10-acre lake ‘bout a half-mile hike away (30 minutes round-trip on foot). It’s a bit of a trek—expect hilly, mountainous terrain—but a paddle boat awaits for a peaceful float. We are working on getting a dock back there but until then expect to wear high boots or to get wet walking to the paddle boat. There is no public access, so it’s all yours! ATVs or wheelers can also zip along the trail for faster fun. The area’s brimming with summer adventures—fishin’, hikin’, foragin’, golfin’, or ATV ridin’ on nearby trails. Copper Falls State Park, just 6.5 miles north, offers stunnin’ views, while Drop Tine restaurant in Cayuga (3.5 miles south) serves up a mean fish fry and burgers.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore camping guide

Overview

About

If kayaking around deserted beaches, rocky coves, and forested cliffs sounds like your kind of adventure, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore checks all the boxes. Rent a boat or kayak to explore the 21 islands that speckle the southwest shore of Lake Superior, paddle by rust-red cliffs, sea caves, and 19th-century lighthouses, or head ashore to hike along forest trails or pitch your tent at secluded, boat-in campsites. Sixteen of the islands offer camping,  including Stockton Island, Devils Island, and Rocky Island. Don’t fancy getting on the water? The lakeshore also has 12 miles of trails and two mainland campsites.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for landlubbers: Sand Point Campsite has one hike-in or paddle-in tent-only site with a picnic table, fire ring, and stump privy.
  • Best for first-timers: Sand Island Campsite has individual and group tent sites within a short paddling distance of the mainland.
  • Best for hikers: Oak Island Campsite has individual, group, and primitive camping, with easy access to the island’s forest trails.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Camping permits are required for all national seashore campsites and must be reserved in advance.
  2. You can purchase permits for individual campsites up to 30 days in advance and group sites up to 12 months in advance. Permits should be purchased at least five days prior to travel; last-minute reservations are possible by calling the park directly.
  3. You can reserve the park’s campsites via the Recreation.gov website.

When to go

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is open year-round, but most campers come between June and August to make the most of the summer weather. Winter weather can be extreme, and access to the islands is often restricted. However, it is usually possible to explore the mainland area, and the seasonal ice caves are a big draw. Whenever you visit, it’s essential to check the current conditions, as unexpected weather can hamper travel plans even in summer.

Know before you go

  • The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is set along Lake Superior at the northern tip of Wisconsin. The islands can only be reached by boat or kayak, with boat launches along the mainland at Little Sand Bay and Meyers Beach. Sightseeing cruises, boat charters, and water taxis are also available.
  • It is free to visit the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, but camping, parking, and boat docking fees apply. Sleeping overnight in your own vessel on the islands is allowed (docking fees apply), but overnight anchoring in the park (away from the public docks) is free of charge.
  • There are no drive-in campsites on the islands, and amenities are limited to vault toilets, picnic benches, and fire rings. Only a few campsites have potable water, so you should bring your own supply. Primitive campsites have no amenities, and you must be 100% self-sufficient. Cell phone service is limited throughout the park.
  • Black bears are found on all of the Apostle Islands, so follow bear safety procedures, and store all food, garbage, and cooking materials in the bear-proof lockers provided at the campsites (primitive campers should hang food and garbage from a tree at least 12 feet from the ground and six feet from the trunk).
  • There are accessible campsites and vault toilets on Stockton Island and Sand Island. The Sand Island-East Bay hiking trail is also accessible.
