The best camping near First Landing State Park guide

Overview

About

Virginia's most visited state park has played an amazing part in our country's history. Its waterways have been navigated by Native American canoes, 20th-century schooners, and modern cargo ships.

Supposedly, Blackbeard himself hid in the park's narrows to avoid capture. The king of Virginia state parks is a little slice of paradise in the urban center of Virginia Beach.

Here you'll find a sprawling natural area filled with bald cypress-lined swamps, a maritime forest, deep lagoons, and rare plants. Venture on the 20 miles of varied hiking trails, and relax on 1.5 miles of sandy beach on the Chesapeake Bay.

This park offers a single boat launch at the Narrows for the anglers and sailors. The campground and camp store is located right on the bay for incredible views. Anywhere you decide to rest, the cool sea breeze from the beach is here to ease you to quality ZzZs.

Notable campgrounds

  • Two-bedroom Frame Cabins: Cozy retreats with hardwood floors, nestled in the park's serene setting.
  • Two-bedroom Cinderblock Cabins: Spacious accommodations with modern amenities, offering a comfortable stay.
  • Yurts: Unique, circular structures providing a rustic yet comfortable camping experience right by the Chesapeake Bay.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early, especially for peak season stays, to ensure your spot in this popular park.
  • Consider mid-week visits for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellations for last-minute opportunities to reserve a campsite.
  • Explore nearby camping options if the park is fully booked during your desired travel dates.

When to go

The best time to visit First Landing State Park is during spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summers can be hot and crowded, while winters are quieter but cooler. Plan your visit around these seasons for the best experience.

Know before you go

  • Weekends experience high visitation; arrive early to avoid delays and secure parking.
  • Check the park's construction schedule as some facilities, like the Trail Center, may be closed.
  • Be prepared for military training noise from the adjacent base, which poses no risk to visitors.
  • Accessibility is a priority, with features like beach wheelchairs and universally accessible trails.
  • Remember to bring linens for cabin stays, as they are not provided by the park.
