Lake James State Park
Named for James B. Duke, (Duke Power Co. founder), the lake is a hydroelectric unit for the company.
Located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this 6,812-acre lake boasts crystal-clear waters. Two boat ramps, Hidden Cove and Canal Bridge, give powerboats and sailboats easy access.
Swimmers flock to the Paddy's Creek Area for a refreshing dip. Plentiful picnicking areas and abundant bass and walleye to catch make recreational dreams come true.
The state park offers a 25-mile trail system. 15 of these are multi-use trails that welcome cyclists of all levels. Families find the flat and easy 0.75-mile Holly Discovery Trail a child-friendly option. Hikers and mountain bikers trek the 6-mile West Wimba Loop and 4.4-mile East Wimba Loop.
