Assateague State Park
Hang with a herd of wild ponies just 15 minutes south of Ocean City.
Lovingly referred to by Marylanders as "Pony Island," this bit of land borders the Atlantic. It takes its nickname from its native population of wild ponies. Those ponies make this a particularly popular vacation destination for families with young children. Approximately 100 ponies freely roam this park.
If you're bringing kids to Pony Island, remind them that interacting with the ponies is illegal! The camp recommends giving the wild ponies an approximately 40-foot berth. Since the ponies have no fixed home, you aren't guaranteed to catch sight of them.
Your best bet is to stroll the trails or the beach. (It's also a good idea to set expectations accordingly to avoid potential tantrums!)
