This cabin was beautiful in a perfect location next to the pond all though the grass is 5ft tall and I was unable to fish around, there was everything we needed to inside the cabin to cook the bottom level is a very nice on the other hand the upstairs is disgusting.. I do feel like if you pay anything to stay anywhere they should do a regular cleaning after each guest left. The top floor is covered in mice poop and the beds have huge piss and shit stains on them they need to be thrown away regardless if people come and stay for a night a lot of people would rather sleep on the floor than in those beds everything needs to be pitched so people can use the top floor to just set up a air mattress or something..

beautiful views but eh,
we made the best of our time since it was just a single night but there’s so many little tweaks that could make this place better, basic cleaning being one of them. the beds upstairs were so gross, covered in stains and holes. it looks like animals take over the place when they can. the downstairs pullout was better but not by much. same with the regular couch. & that outhouse oh my gawd. i wish we would’ve brought a camping toilet. we did our business outside bc there’s no way anyone should be sitting on that. if you’re looking for a private, peaceful get away this could be your spot but come prepared which is in the listing but come more prepared that that lol. it was quiet and nice for what it was, especially how cheap but it would’ve been nice to know these lil things ahead of time. it’s good for the camping without using a tent vibe essentially but some cleanliness could’ve made it so much better. also, this time of year is not good to go fishing unless you’re wearing boots ! pics made it seem like the pond was just a low grass area to walk and the grass was extremely tall (which isn’t an issue we know it’s for the cows we just didn’t expect that) and it wasn’t easy to get to. my sister had a hell of a time trying to fish and was bummed she couldn’t. i wouldn’t come back.

Rustic and relaxing

The cabin was so rustic and cute, and the privacy was wonderful. We enjoyed the birdsong and frogs calling. We enjoyed being off grid and brought our yeti cooler and a string of battery powered LED lights for evenings. The propane cookstove worked great. We really enjoyed our stay although there were a few things that could be improved. We understand rustic, we do rustic, we love rustic. However rustic does not mean the grass shouldn't be mowed (it was a foot high in spots), or that the cabin shouldn't be clean (mouse droppings everywhere-especially 2nd floor which we didn't use), or that the cabin couldn't be made more comfortable (more than one screened window per floor would allow better airflow). And not sure what's up with the water. We've used cistern stored water before, but this water smelled like poop! If you ran the spigot awhile, the smell would dissipate somewhat. But next time you used it, back to the poop smell. But even so, the pros outweighed the cons, and we would stay again if in the area.

As always, I truly enjoyed our stay at your cabin. The simplicity of the space was exactly what I needed—a perfect retreat from the noise of everyday life. Waking up to the stillness, stepping outside to see the frozen pond glistening in the crisp air, and just soaking in the peace and quiet was an absolute gift. It’s rare to find a place where time seems to slow down, and this was one of those special places. Thank you for sharing this little slice of tranquility—I’m already looking forward to coming back!

Pete and Marjie's property is AMAZING!!! My daughter and I fished, hiked, and enjoyed the scenery. We stayed the whole weekend and could have stayed longer. What a treat. Looking forward to doing it again.

A bit hot at night, screens on more than one window would help with air flow but overall it was a great stay! We would definitely book again!

I loved it here! It was hot Friday night and very humid so we didn't sleep inside... But Sunday to Tuesday morning was gorgeous out. Watching the sun come up, the sun go down - the light hitting those hills and all, it was gorgeous. You only hear an occasional car in the gravel road, and nothing else. The area is amazing if you have a chance to explore! If you're expecting a full cabin with amenities , you'll be disappointed. Rustic means rustic. There are bugs ,no electricity, and other critters. If you're used to camping or using lean -to shelters, this will be right up your alley. Thank you for sharing your place!

A nice peaceful, private retreat

A very nice memorial day retreat. Sometimes life gets busy and overwhelming, and you just need to get away. This is the perfect place for that. Quiet, calm, peace of mind. We did lots of relaxing, grilling, and exploring/hiking with our dog. He really enjoyed it and so did we. Would definitely recommend. Hope to go back again sometime

We loved our stay at the Shew's cabin! We were captivated by the peacefulness and privacy. So nice to not hear the constant hum of electrical appliances or be distracted by electronic devices. I had the best night's sleep in months! And the hot shower was the icing on the cake after our hike on the Buckeye Trail. Can't wait to return for another stay.

Great stop on the Buckeye Trail
We based ourselves here for some section hiking on the Stockport and N Straitsville sections of the BT. Perfect location, right on the BT when you walk out the door. Rustic for sure, but great spot to stay without spending a ton of money or pitching a tent.

So, the cabin itself was very cute and within a really quaint area. The inside was clean and inviting, and the surrounding nature was wonderful as well. A few gripes, though.
1.) finding the cabin wasn’t easy. While we did arrive at night, and that made it harder, there weren’t any markers to make it easier, even if we’d arrived during the day. The pictures don’t do enough justice to help locate it, unfortunately. So before you go, I recommend asking them well ahead of time for specifics and markers. The instructions they have currently work for some, but not all. And there’s no guarantee that people traveling through will always be able to arrive before the sun goes down.
2.) the outhouse isn’t really somewhere you want to do your “business”. Too many flies coming out from inside of the toilet and idk about y’all, but having them crawl on my nether regions is an unpleasant feeling when you’re trying to sit on the toilet.
3.) lastly, the out of date brochures in the cabin. I don’t personally care too much about this, but as someone who’s never camped/glamped in this area, if I wanted information on things nearby, etc. I’m not sure the information in there would’ve done me much justice.

This was our first vacation in 4 years. 2 days isnt much but its what we had. We were really disappointed to find the place smelling of mold and the whole bottom of the sink cabinet covered in black mold.
I have a severe allergy to it. So we made the best and slept outside. Again trying to be grateful. The farm itself was lovely. And we bought some of the jams and beef steaks from the farmer. Which were truly delicious.
Our last night there we har made a huge dinner. Ans were sitting out on the back porch. Enjoying the quite and solitude. Our girls were changing into their pjs when our of the blue the owner came with her dog and a truck pulling up.
My girls and son were understanably upset rushing around trying to get dresses. And my husband and I had to abandone our dinner.
The owner decided right then and there was the time to get an estimate to fix 2 broken windows. Now I do understand workman have their own schedules. But we were out of the cabin for 6 hours that day. Ans my girls were changing. We had no warning to permission asked. They all barged in. And the owners dog came and urinated on my clothes.

This place was wonderful, out in the middle of nowhere. If there's a bad review they didn't read the whole ad ahead of time.
Directions were accurate as well.
We brought our generator and had an amazing time for my boyfriends birthday. Steaks were amazing!! And so is the apple butter /jams! About an hour from hocking hills and roughly 40 from Athens. and tons of awesome things to do inbetween!
There's an outhouse and it's as clean as outhouses get, but Watch for spiders ! The shower inside was helpful after hiking all day! Hot OR cold water. Not both. Be prepared. It was hot out so the cold shower was refreshing! We brought a foam mattress topper and slept in the main room downstairs as it was cooler.
This is like camping, but with a shelter.
Went fishing& got a smaller sized bass in the pond. We released it, maybe you'll catch the same one :) tons of frogs, and wow the fireflies were gorgeous and everywhere !! Minimal light pollution so can see stars well. We were lucky to see some shooting stars !
BRING WATER& LIGHTS!
(no candles as owner requested)
helpful tip, pinesol helps keep the flies away. I left some for the next visitors. Just wipe around the door/window frames with a rag and they will stay away. After all it's a cow farm, expect flies and outdoor critters.
Also Pete and Marjie are awesome people! And their dog is the cutest!

The property is gorgeous. Definitely spend some time walking around. There are a variety of apple trees near the hay barn. Be prepared though to do some regular tick checks. Plenty of Flys and other bugs too but for the price and fact it's an operating beef farm this should fully be expected. The cabin was perfect for the two of us however we did bring our own camping mattress and set it up in the living room which worked great. Spent a lot of time on the deck watching different birds and all the cows until Pete moved them to a different pasture. there's a chance you won't see or hear them from the cabin. We enjoyed having them near us. The kitchen was decently stocked with pots and pans. You may want to bring anything else you need. The stove worked great and the hot shower was a huge plus. I recommend buying some steaks but that's really all that is available from the farm store. If you're used to camping and know what youre doing this place is amazing and there are so many hooks!! #kentuckyhotwine

Simple & rustic
This location was exactly as advertised: no electricity, no potable water, and no cell service, which was precisely what we needed.
The porch provided us with an ideal spot for nature watching. We spent hours observing the birds, the cattle, and the day unfolding.
As stated, this is not a destination for those seeking conventional creature comforts, especially during hotter months. The upstairs and the mattresses there get quite warm, and we wouldn't recommend them for use in the heat of the summer. We brought screens for the downstairs windows, but the sliding glass door also needs one. However, the shower and the tankless hot water system worked wonderfully.
Our hosts, Majorie and Pete, were friendly and answered our questions. We purchased porterhouse steaks raised on their farm, which we grilled. These were definitely a highlight of the trip.

This listing is a lovely location but was not cleaned. The outhouse is poorly maintained and the beds had mouse droppings on them. The beds looked to be on their very last leg or past. We slept in our cars or hammocks.
The property appeared to not of been cleaned for the season. One hour of work could drastically improve this property. A new toilet seat to replace the old one, screens in the upstairs windows and sawdust rather than baking soda (why?) would make this a trip we may of repeated.
