Weekend Trip to FernRock Retreat

We had an incredible trip. Very private, very moving. There's lots of energy on this property. We didn't have a long stay so we didn't socialize too much but Sandy and John were incredibly kind and welcoming when we did need to talk.

I definitely recommend this place to anyone willing to enjoy nature. We went hiking along the creek and it was a nice walk. We enjoyed getting our footwear full of mud and we were also able to catch and release river crabs. That's an amazing experience. Sandy is such a sweet host. We me John when we were leaving because he is always working. Fire pit in the labyrinth is such a great experience.

Weekend Trip to FernRock Retreat

We are a family from Ukraine, outdoor recreation is an integral part of our lives, we thank God that we were lucky enough to visit this place, every part of which is made with love and care. It’s always so beautiful here. I arrived in the rain but next day was hot. The stream was cold and lovely to sit by. Make sure you bring bug repellant, mosquitoes and biting flies are everywhere after a rain. Site 10 is furthest away and private but has just one step down to the creek. Mel is always so helpful and kind, my dogs love the freedom to sprint through the field and roam as we walk. This is always my favorite camping spot.

Weekend Trip to FernRock Retreat

My partner and I spent a weekend at Fern Rock and had a beautiful and healing experience. John and Sandy have done an incredible job of creating spaces of rest and contemplation throughout the property and the cabin was cozy and so well equipped for any of our cooking and sleeping needs. The kayaks and paddle boards were a treat. Plus they have a great collection of nature loving books. John and Sandy are lovely hosts and a delight to interact with. I will be recommending Fern Rock to friends and plan on returning again!

Our treehouse stay was incredible! We felt welcome, relaxed, and cozy thanks to all the thoughtful touches. You really don’t have to bring anything other than food and a bathing suit to enjoy that awesome hot tub. We enjoyed the quiet and privacy of the property. Even when the rain came we stayed dry, cool, and cozy in the tent. Our dog was so happy there too. We can’t wait to return!

Shambala at Mystic Hollow

Pitch your tent along Irish Creek under a canopy of Maples at Mystic Hollow. Irish Creek, which is a stream, is a tributary to the Schuylkill River. Site are a 5 minute walk from main house. The land is flat for walking to the camping area. A slight bit bumpy in a small area. I can manage just fine in flip flops but I did want to provide the information if anyone would be using a wheelchair. There is also a small bridge that goes over a small strip of wetlands. Fire rings are included. Tables can be provided. Just let us know ahead of time. I can haul your gear to your spot with tractor and wagon if needed. There is a port-a-potty close by. We are flexible with check-in and check-out times if we are not at full capacity. Just let us know ahead of time if you want to check in or out earlier or later. We allow dogs. They must be on leashes unless they are friendly and play well with others. You must clean up your dog's poop! No exceptions! We are 5 minutes from the Schuylkill River. 10 minutes from Ontelaunee Lake. 15 minutes from Blue Marsh. 15 minutes from the Appalacian Trail. Trail heads nearby would be Port Clinton, Hamburg, Bernville, Bethel, Blue Rocks, Kempton... 20 minutes from Hawk Mountain. We are an hour from Jim Thorpe. There are several wineries in the area including Long Trout Winery where wine is cool and hippy chicks rule! My favorite! Lots of wildlife in the area. Expect to hear owls, blue heron, cows, goats, chickens, horses, hawks, eagles, dogs, racoons and coyotes. There is a good chance of being visited by racoons at night if your food isn't stored away properly. Also, the deer may walk past in the middle of the night as well. We do also get wild turkey during different times of the year. Hiking, kayaking, tubing, fishing, mountain biking, bike trails, etc... all nearby. Sadly there are no fish in Irish Creek worth catching. The Crayfish are! As with any land situated along a water source, there is always a possibility of flooding. We flood maybe once a year, once every other year. If that should happen, we will assist in hauling gear. There is higher ground for tents to be set up if need be. There will also be rooms available to rent in the near future. Please don't hesitate to contact us with questions. 420 friendly. LGBTQ friendly. If you are coming from out of state: Pennsylvania has a quarantine order for untreated firewood entering the state to protect its forests from invasive species. Firewood must be kiln dried, heat treated, fumigated, or USDA certified to enter the state. However, commercially imported wood that has been heat-treated according to USDA regulations typically doesn't fall under these bans.

Crawfish, sycamore trees, foxes, pileated woodpeckers, and more! Caring for the land: please do not collect your own firewood on the land. That wood is decomposing and contributing to the health of the forest, providing numerous habitats for bugs. Note on dogs: we run a dog-sitting business, so there may be a pack (2-5) of dogs that come through the woods with us on walks. All dogs we sit are friendly towards humans. Only 16 miles from Philadelphia, Ridley Creek State Park brings you back to nature and back in time. The historic park has an 18th-century colonial plantation, a stone mansion with gardens, and paved hiking trails running through old growth forests. Start at Hunting Hill Mansion, a stunning complex of stone buildings from where you can visit the park office, horse stables, and several formal gardens. You can also hike, jog, or bike through the woods along the park’s five-mile paved trail; ride a steed across the 4.7-mile equestrian trail; or pack your fly fishing gear down to Ridley Creek. The park’s two rustic group camping sites are for organized groups only.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Ridley Creek State Park’s campground is only available for organized youth or adult groups that belong to an official organization, like a school or scouting troop. To find out if your group qualifies, call the park directly at (610) 892-3900.
Because there are only two campsites, booking ahead is essential.
Both campsites can be reserved 11 months in advance, either online or by calling (888) 727-2757.

When to go

This year-round park is a popular destination for field trips and quick nature getaways for Philadelphians, though it’s busiest during summers and on weekends. Most educational programming runs from April through November. Come autumn, the park is a great place to view fall foliage. For winter recreation close to Philly, Ridley Creek is hard to beat. Its multi-use trails allow cross country skiing when there is snow, and a grassy hill near the park office is great for sledding.
