Before the Kerr Scott Reservoir was built, in the 40's and 50's, this neighborhood was a local swimming hole and vacation area. Public buses came from neighboring communities so people could boat, swim, camp, and picnic.
While we don't have access to the pond, our part of this land still is calling out to people, 'Come, rest, unload your burdens, and find peace.'
When we started this project with Hipcamp, we didn't fully realize that we were reconnecting with the history on this property. So, come, take your shoes off, and wade in the creek. Read a book while laying in a hammock. Sit by the fire and chat with family and friends.
Come and participate in our little homesteading project, and leave your burdens behind.
LOCAL ACTIVITIES:
To the west is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is 30 minutes away.
15 minutes away is Kerr Scott Dam where you can rent kayaks, pontoon boats, as well as other sporting equipment. Fish, go mountain biking on the extensive trails, and hiking.
Prayer Mountain is right up the road, about 2 miles away.
Heading east, you can find several fine wineries and vineyards that you can visit. There is also a moonshine distillery in town.
About a half hour away is an Amish community that has several businesses open to the public, including the Shiloh Bakery and General Store. They are closed on Sunday and Monday.
To the northeast, about 45 minutes away, is Stone Mountain. Absolutely fantastic hiking, it is also an old homestead that has been renovated and is open to the public.
To the south, there is Rocky Face Park, where there is hiking and rock climbing. Nearby, is Emerald Hollow Mine, where you can go and find, and keep, precious stones you find in the nearby river.
There is also a great disk course course, Highland Hills Disc Golf Course, one of the top 25 in the country. There is fun for all ages.
Merlefest, the last weekend of April, a world class Bluegrass festival, is located right in our town.

This property is 180 acres of woods and mountains with streams and ponds.
Beautiful settings. If you like hiking in the mountains this will definitely hit the spot. You can fish in the ponds it has blue gills and catfish. I also added grass carp there as part of weed management.
This used to be an abandoned farm which I want to bring back to life.
The site offers three luxury large Safari Style Tents that are all separate and private.
This is not a KOA style of camping where everyone is on top of each other.
All tents are far away from each other to provide privacy and freedom of going Wild (still remaining civilized in your manners and careful attitude to Nature around you).
Tent 1 is in the Forrest itself and it is pretty cool and serene.
Tent 2 is on the top of a rocky hill overlooking the forest.
Tent 3 is the most remote and closest to the ponds. It has most of the open space around it, and can be a great place for parties.
We are working on making the sites and the area more comfortable, but I do not want to make it a manicured park. I want it to remain wild and still offer comfortable stay.
The farm is work in progress.
The closest town - Lenoir is about 12 miles away . Closest Grocery store (Dollar General) - about 3 miles away. Closest Gas station - 2 miles away.
Professional Tennis court, Basketball court and large kids playground are in a public park within - 5 minute drive.
Lenoir has restaurants, shopping, etc.
Hickory is a larger town about 25 minutes drive. Hickory Lake is a large reservoir with marina where you can rent a boat and it also offers a good game fishing.
Nice swimming beach access on Lake Hickory 13 miles ( 20 Minutes) from here: Lake Hickory Wittenburg access area (Wittenburg Access Area, 175 Wildlife Access Rd, Hickory, NC 28601)
Asheville is 1:25 hrs to the West, Charlotte is 1:25 hr to the East.

In the cold months, it's heated by a wood burning stove. Also next to the house are logging roads that allow you to hike the Ripshin Mountains. My property consists of a ridge running east to west with the access road running along the south border. the land slopes up to the ridge for about 300 feet, and then down to the river for about 800 feet. The south side of the ridge has a small pond close to the road. The rest is pasture, and an orchard and small vineyard. The north side of the ridge is old growth timber, and shady and cool. The two cabins are along the river. One is perched on a ridge over looking the river and the other is right on the river. The swimming hole is 30 feet from the lower cabin. There is room for a couple campsites along the river also. The south side of the ridge was a cotton farm decades ago, but was covered in timber when I bought it 12 years ago. The north side has been in timber for the known history of the property.

The Neal Creek campsites are semi-wooded areas with plenty of shade. They are very large private, peaceful and quiet sites.
The Back Forty Camping is semi-wooded area with plenty of privacy!
View the stars at night, relax during the day or if you are into biking or hiking, go to the Overmountain Victory trail located about 15 minutes away and enjoy the 6.7 mile loop around Lake Whelchel right off I-85.

I truly cannot find the words to accurately describe how magical the River Nest is. I can tell you that it was very hard having to leave!
This place is an absolute oasis for anyone looking for a place to enjoy some solitude and/or be surrounded by beautiful nature and scenery.
Christine has thought of every detail, there was truly nothing I needed that wasn't available to me.
From the magestic views, to the great hiking trails, picking fresh blackberries, having access to the river below, I was beyond happy to be there every minute of the day. Cannot wait to return!

Weekend Trip to Starlight Hills
We had a lot of fun! I’m not a camper but my boyfriend is so I booked a camping trip that felt like the best of both worlds for his birthday! It was as close to real camping with a touch of glamping as you can get! I do wish the string lights were still up at the campsite! We were in MTG 5 and it was nice and secluded since our family also rented the little cabin next to us! Would highly recommend visiting :) we will be returning for a few days soon since we know we like it! Host is also great and has great communication!

1 night at Starlight Hills
I loved it. Luna Dome was the most expensive site $250/night. No bathroom or water but you can’t beat the view. You still have to use bath house which is down at the entrance so it’s a nice walk or short all terrain drive. Bed was comfy and Bluetooth capability was a nice modern touch.
My only complaints are: the campground is near a main mountain road. Not a great deal of traffic but you can definitely hear the semis engine braking at night. And the dogs (wild?) barking somewhere in the valley till the middle of the night was a little disturbing. But the view supersedes all of that. Try it for yourself!

1 night at The Dancing Pig On Abbotts Creek
My stay at this property was truly wonderful. The space is beautiful and thoughtfully crafted, with so many touches that make it feel special. Sitting on the swing overlooking the tall trees, relaxing in the hammock, and taking a cold outdoor shower made the whole experience feel grounding and restorative. It was the perfect reset during my road trip. Natellie is a fantastic host and communicated clearly throughout my stay.

Weekend Trip to Adin`s river cabin
Adin’s river side cabin is a solitude paradise if that’s what you’re in need of! Or a family trip of great memories! The area is secluded and private with plenty of room to spread out! I wanted to get away and soak in the cool river before the heat of the summer sets in! And this was absolutely perfect. The indoor bathroom is the smallest shower I’ve ever seen in my life, but like Adin says sailor shower! It gets the job done. There is an outhouse that did not appear to be in use and has space in the back for an outdoor shower that I would totally utilize if I go again, just for the convenience and privacy it offers! The river access is just incomparable for the price. Hurricane Helene did make the beach area and cliff a little more perilous than original. But Adin has made a deck and a roped walkway where you can tube, soak or just sit and enjoy. And it has steps also into the water. The multi level decks offer the most peaceful views. Top deck for sunning, 2nd for morning coffee or lunch, 3rd for the bbq dinner, and a swing on the bottom that I used a lot!! Once even to wait out a rain shower before getting back in the river! The VHS collection is amazing and really makes you feel like its an unplugged vacation! Close to parks and falls and great views! Adin even had a suggestion for a local lady who could give me directions to a different local spot! I could have stayed a week or more! The 2nd deck even has a removable doggy door to keep the pups from running! Perfect!

Great place to stay for a few nights! The bed was comfortable and tent was cozy and dry on some very rainy days. Made for a great alternative to our usual tent camping since we anticipated the weather wouldn’t cooperate. Felt very private but is a bit of a hike back and when we arrived, the lights weren’t lit so it was a bit hard to see and find our way back. Aside from that, was perfect!

It was a great site and was well equipped for a sunset glamping experience. We ended up with lots of rain unfortunately and no sunset but the tent was totally waterproof and we stayed dry while sleeping! There was also a mini fan that helped with the humidity. We loved the fairy lights around the site and it was right next to the overlook with usable grills!

1 night at Tails and Trails
My husband and I booked this location for a night stay before heading to the Uwharrie National Forest. A few pros, I loved the setup, double deck, the tent was roomie (once inside, I’m 6’2 so getting in and out was a little tricky with the ropes right at your face), a very wooden walk to the site(not onsite parking as stated, you are walking about 470’ ft to the campsite (bring a wagon if you have a lot of “stuff”), the view in front of the spot was beautiful! Now for the cons, I want to be as kind as possible when stating the doggie daycare was a bit interrupting our nature (peaceful) getaway. If you’re not used to dogs barking, you will hear them at the tent site . The bathroom has no light and when we arrived, there was enough TP for one bathroom trip(thankfully we had backup). The door to the bathroom was tricky / very hard to open. I was a little upset when I noticed the hammock chairs were no longer part of the setup. I was ready to relax in the swings, my husband was going to set up my hammock but there was only one hook at the old swing site. Again, these are our cons. The pros did outweigh the cons and we were thankful for our stay. It did storm the night we stayed, the tent had a very very small leak at the top so thankfully nothing happened during the rain storm and we stayed dried and safe. Thank you for allowing us to stay.

This was one of the most open beautiful spot ,the tent was the coolest. Good for a family gathering. . Big and open area. If you're the type that needs shade... bring a canopy. . Excellent location for all things Uwharrie. So nice to sleep in a bed while camping instead of an air mattress! A previous review mentioned hanging something to block the road, but we found the site to be totally isolated - we saw one car drive by the dirt road all week.

Unexpected Stop, Perfect Stay at Lake Norman State

Lake Norman Campground
We pulled into Lake Norman State Park around 6 PM on New Year’s Eve, mainly because we didn’t want to drive a couple more hours to our original destination. We only planned to stay one night, but the campground surprised us—in the best way—and we ended up staying three nights instead.
There were plenty of available campsites, and every site we saw was at least decently spaced, with several feeling nicely secluded. The campground was quiet and well laid out. The bathhouse was clean and modern, and having water spigots available in the no-hookups loop was a big plus.
One of the highlights was riding our e-bikes on the Hawk, Hicks, Norwood Creek, and Monbo loops. These are the easier sections of the Itusi Trail system and were a lot of fun—though still a bit too unpaved for my wife’s taste 😄. Even so, the hiking trail access from the campground made it easy to get out and explore.
This stop wasn’t planned at all, but it turned into one of those stays that makes you glad plans changed. We’ll definitely be coming back to Lake Norman State Park.
