The best camping near Posey Island Marine State Park guide

Overview

About

Embark on a tranquil adventure at Posey Island Marine State Park, a hidden gem nestled in the waters near Friday Harbor. This one-acre marine haven offers a unique opportunity for kayakers to explore the scenic coastline, observe diverse wildlife, and indulge in beach exploration. With two primitive group campsites, Posey Island is an idyllic overnight destination for those seeking a serene escape amid the natural splendor of the Pacific Northwest.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early to secure your spot, as the two primitive campsites are highly sought after during the peak season from May 15 to September 30.
  • For weekend adventurers, remember that Friday or Saturday nights are limited to one site and one night per reservation.
  • Weekday wanderers can enjoy a longer stay, with reservations allowing for a maximum of two nights from Sunday to Thursday.
  • Explore nearby camping options if Posey Island is fully booked, ensuring you have a backup plan for your outdoor excursion.

When to go

The best time to visit Posey Island Marine State Park is during the summer months, from 6:30am to dusk, when the weather is warm and the days are long. Winter visits, from 8am to dusk, offer a quieter experience but require preparation for cooler temperatures. Avoid tide shifts around Spieden Island, as waters can be treacherous.

Know before you go

  • Keep dogs on a leash to maintain the park's tranquility and protect wildlife habitats.
  • Remember to pack out all trash, as there are no trash disposal facilities on the island.
  • Access to the park is boat-in only, with day use permitted for those arriving via motored vessels.
  • Stay safe by avoiding the northwest side of Spieden Island during tide shifts.
  • Respect local wildlife by not approaching harbor seals or their resting areas.
