Bald Eagle Farm on the Patuxent

3 sites · RVs, Tents300 acres · Brandywine, MD
Bald Eagle Farm has been in our family for three generations. Today two generations still live and operate the family farm. We once raised tobacco and cattle and have now converted to growing hay and grain. My family wants to share the views and the experience of sleeping under the stars on our beautiful secluded farm. You will hear nothing but the wind, birds, frogs and insects while you doze off or enjoy the dark sky and camp fire. We live on the farm so we are always here to help you out if needed. We can provide you with the firewood you need and water from our deep well. We are here to make your stay as comfortable as possible and provide a restroom in the case of an "emergency". Recently named a finalist for 'Best Hipcamp in Maryland'! Thank you SO much for your support and we look forward to hosting you in 2022. There are three campsites on the farm, one by the pond and two by the river. Very secluded and all sites include , firepit, log bench, and a picnic table that seats 3-4 people. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN FIREWOOD. AT THIS TIME WE ARE OUT FOR THE SEASON. The original river campsite has been moved to a more remote spot so that all campers can access the pond and pier to the river. Farm encompasses nearly 300 acres on the Patuxent River. There is access to the river on high tide via our private creek (must bring your own canoe or kayak) and 150 acres of marshland. Over 100 acres of woods to walk through and a pond for wildlife watching. Local Spots to Visit: Canoe/Kayak/Fishing: Clyde Watson Boating Area, Patuxent River Park, Patuxent Wetlands Park, Cedar Haven Fishing Area Hiking: Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, Patuxent River Park, Cedarville State Forest, Rosaryville State Park, Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, Maxwell Hall Park Places to Eat: Hardesty Haven Cafe, Moreland's Produce & Market, Cedarville Grocery. Gratitude at the Mill Pond

2 sites · RVs, Tents30 acres · Heathsville, VA
In 1831 formerly Northern's Mill had an old mill house, dwelling house, outbuildings, mill pond and water courses with about 31 acres and was bought for an enormous amount of $10.00! At the working mill the owner's wife baked pies for the workers to enjoy while they waited for their ground grains (most likely corn, soybeans and wheat). The pond is also recognized as Courtney Mill Pond and Kissinger Mill Pond. Fires in the 1980's have claimed the building creating a perfect place for you to enjoy nature outside. Learn more about this land: Fresh and salt water surrounds a birding, fishing paradise with 5 acres to explore. Bald Eagles are a common siting. We offer a primitive camping experience in the heart of the Northern Neck.  The road is washed out and fresh water pond mostly drained. You will access from Mundy Point Road. This historical site had a working Mill built in the early 1800's. Please check out my friend's place nearby at Callao Brewery and Rivah Vineyards at the Grove!  Grab some fresh local veggies from one of the Amish stands and don't forget your tackle and bait at RW's. Camp 1 has the most room for car camping and groups close to the road and overlooking the pond. Camp 2 is a short hike to a private knoll overlooking the grassy marsh of Mill Creek, this is tidal water that flows to the Potomac. Welcome to Gratitude!

The best camping near Calvert Cliffs State Park guide

Overview

About

Soaring sea cliffs line the shores of Chesapeake Bay at Calvert Cliffs, but the most sought-after treasures of this state park lie buried underfoot. Some 600 known species of fossils have been found beneath the coastal cliffs, and fossil hunters can still unearth some unique finds. It’s an almost 2-mile walk from the day-use area to reach the beach, but you can cool off with a swim on arrival. Away from the coast, 13 miles of hiking trails lead the way through forested wildlands, with some trails open to cyclists and horseback riders too. Camping isn’t permitted within the state park.

When to go

This coastal park is most enticing in summer, when the waters are warm enough to swim, and the tree-lined trails provide plenty of shade. However, the small beach can get busy on summer weekends, and picnic spots fill up quickly—opt for a weekday visit out of season if you want to avoid the crowds. Time your visit for low tide if you plan on fossil hunting.

Know before you go

  • Calvert Cliffs State Park is 14 miles southeast west of Prince Frederick or about a 20-minute drive away along route 4.
  • There is a per-vehicle fee to enter Calvert Cliffs State Park.
  • There is a reservable picnic pavilion, but all other picnic tables and grills are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Restrooms can be found at the picnic area and the beach.
  • Walking or fossil hunting on or beneath the cliffs is illegal due to the danger of landslides. Swimming is permitted at the beach, but there is no lifeguard service.
  • The beach at Calvert Cliffs State Park is accessible for wheelchairs by prior notice only—contact the park at least two weeks before your visit.
