Elmlock was named by MJ's Grandfather for the majestic Elm trees that once graced the property and banks of the Tulpehocken Stream passing through the Union Canal lock. These beautiful trees were devastated by the Dutch Elm Disease in the early 20th century. Elmlock and the surrounding area was surveyed by non other than George Washington as plans were formulating to build a canal system to join the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Rivers. The General stayed with his friend Captain Michael Lei on the adjacent farm, once known as the Tulpehocken Manor when visiting the area. The ruins of one of the canal locks remains on the Elmlock property adjacent to the camping area. The 1838 stone farmhouse was built by the Spengler family and acquired by MJ's Grandfather in 1913. MJ's pottery studio is a local "Town Barn" that was relocated piece by piece to Elmlock by MJ"s brother, a Historic Restoration Specialist, in 1974. He also restored the Bake Oven on the property's Summer Kitchen. Our property features an historic canal lock from 1828 Union Canal and a stream that runs through it. There is a RR track that runs just south of our camp about 10acres away For campers who love to watch or hear trains you'll have plenty of opportunity to do so!  You can enjoy fishing and playing in the water, which is fresh, clean limestone water from a nearby quarry. We also have two small goats on the property. Farm land surrounds the property, wooded area and cattle nearby. This is a secluded property but less than a mile from Rt 422. You can bike along the many back roads nearby!  We also offer pottery classes, drawing classes, painting classes, and also Medicinal wild plants walk etc. for an additional fee.  See our extras below if you are interested! Historic places to visit and only 20 miles from HersheyPark. Also we are only 15-20 min from the Historic Appalachian Trail! The 66-acre property has been licensed as an airport (PS20) since the 1980s. It is currently an active, private airport. We don't sell fuel or offer services beyond camping so we primarily have only air traffic with few to no landings each year. In other words, it is very quiet here except during the occasional low pass. We are very eager for pilots to fly in and camp out! The beautiful sunsets and stargazing night skies are a real treat for anyone that comes to visit. Lots of deer, birds, and other wildlife can be seen out and about. Bring your telescope and binoculars to view all the property has to offer! The camp sites on our farm are dry (for now) but we DO have a toilet that is cleaned regularly right by the sites. We have three leveled gravel RV/Camper spots, which are large compared to most campgrounds. The sites are pull through for most RVs and Trailers. We provide fire rings but no wood. Our farm is an operational farm with livestock and you will be camping right by our horse pasture. Our location is convenient. We are right off of I-81 and State route 22. Minutes from Hersheypark, Hollywood Casino and Penn National Race Course, The PA Renaissance Faire, as well as Ft. Indiantown Gap and Memorial Lake State Park. If you are a hiker, the Appalachian Trail is minutes from our farm. Our sites are easy access off the main road. We are in a friendly agricultural neighborhood with very little traffic or noise other than the light hum of I-81 in the distance. Wildlife is plentiful in our area and you can hike from our farm to Levitz Community Park (or drive if you prefer) to interact some great nature or have a picnic. Pitch your tent along Irish Creek under a canopy of Maples at Mystic Hollow. Irish Creek stream is a tributary to the Schuylkill River. The land is mostly flat for walking to camping area. Fire rings are included. There is a port-a-potty close by. If you have your own portapotty, you must take the waste with you. We have no way to dispose of human waste. Absolutely no disposing of human waste on the property or in the trash. There will be a fine. At this time, I do not have fresh water, shower or electric. I have an extension cord for charging phones, etc... We are flexible with check-in and check-out times if we are not at full capacity. Just let us know ahead of time. We allow dogs. They must be on leashes unless they are friendly and play well with others. You must clean up your dog's poop! No exceptions! We are 5 minutes from the Schuylkill River. 10 minutes from Ontelaunee Lake. 15 minutes from Blue Marsh. 15 minutes from the Appalacian Trail. Trail heads nearby Port Clinton, Hamburg, Bernville, Bethel, Blue Rocks, Kempton... 20 minutes from Hawk Mountain. We are an hour from Jim Thorpe. There are several wineries in the area including Long Trout Winery where wine is cool and hippy chicks rule! My favorite! Lots of wildlife. Expect to hear owls, blue heron, cows, goats, chickens, hawks, eagles, dogs, racoons and coyotes. Racoons will steal food that is not put away or in coolers. Deer may walk past in the middle of the night. Hiking, kayaking, tubing, fishing, mountain biking, bike trails, etc... all nearby. Sadly there are no fish in Irish Creek worth catching. The Crayfish are! As with any land situated along a water source, there is always a possibility of flooding. We flood maybe once a year, once every other year. If that should happen, we will assist in hauling gear. There is higher ground for tents to be set up if need be. There will also be rooms available to rent in the near future. Six years later, the first trees were sold. Camp on our 16 acre Christmas tree farm in an Amish neighbors with horses. Within 30 minute drive to Hershey park, Mt Gretna , Lebanon, Lancaster, Harrisburg, York. We are 45 minutes from the Strasburg Railroad and Cherry Crest Adventure farm. Enjoy hiking and biking trails nearby and the many attractions. We have excellent cell reception on our farm. Great view for star gazing and sunsets. Firewood available for purchase. We have a stone parking lot for RV campers. Two sites can also accommodate RV’s. We will reserve these sites. Tent campers can set up in the trees and lanes. An outdoor portable toilet is available and water is available at an outside spigot. We are open April through October. We have 6 sites available with fire pits. You are able to drive and park next to the site. Sites are available first come first served. Four persons per site additional $5 per night fee for extra guests. Well its not much of a farm, Rather a secluded grass farm field with goldenrod at the foot of the Elizabethville mountian. It is only 1.8 miles off the Route 25 approximately 1/2 hour drive north of Harrisburg. It is down a dirt road through the woods. At the edge of the field is the woods of the mountian. It has a small stream flowing throgh the woods. Not alot of light pollution so you will be sure to enjoy the starry night sky. Close to alot of neat placed and things to do. Lake Tobias Wildlife Park 2.4 miles, Susquehanna River (Great for fishing and kayaking) 4.6 miles, Fort Halifax Park 5.8 miles, Weiser Forrest Haldeman Tract (Great trails for hiking, moutianbiking or horseback riding) 7.4miles, Ned Smith Center 6.5 miles, Henningers Covered Bridge 9.8 miles, Apalation Trail 10.6 miles, Crossroads Market and Auction (Great place for Food including Pa Dutch, Antiques,Auctions,and Flea market items) 12miles. The area has a thriving Amish community (We can help you connect to a Amish family) with alot of little roadside stands . Plenty of unique shopping experiences, Flea Flickers, Hornings Country Market, Colemans Miltary Surpluss, Hoovers Market, Shops on Main and More. Walmart and fast foods only 8 miles. There is wildlife , You may see deer wander through or grazing near by. This site is a work in progress and may have more improvements till you arrive. The site was tucked between the corn field and cow pasture. A few of the cows would wander towards us with some curiosity, likely to make sure the shenanigans were kept in check. Mitchell and Heather were welcoming and helpful! Will definitely choose to stay here again.

We absolutely loved our stay at Site 1 by the river! The campsite was beautiful, peaceful, and very well maintained. Having a water hookup, bathroom, and easy access to firewood made everything so convenient and completely hassle-free. Our dogs also had an amazing time and loved being able to enjoy the site off-leash. It was the perfect place for them to explore and relax. A huge thank you to Susan and Jen for being so helpful and providing all the details we needed. They made the whole experience easy and enjoyable from start to finish. Weekend Trip to Peace & Quiet by the River!

This was my first experience using hip camp and I’m really happy with my first trip. It was absolutely serene and peaceful. Privacy right on the river. I would absolutely come back here. The host was communicative and very nice. Never got to meet in person but that’s was perfectly fine since they made it extremely easy to get to the sites and get anything extra you may need. Some details about the area: The road in starts as a dirt road with a small farm stand and then turns into grassy road through a field, They do recommend 4WD but for anyone wondering I was able to easily drive my Toyota Camry to my site but if there had been a heavy rain it could possibly get too muddy for something as such. I stayed at site 2 which was extremely secluded and private. First thing to know is there is a steep walk down to the site. A wheelbarrow is provided but it wasn’t too bad getting down. It was more of a pain getting back up but I feel it is worth it for this site. Plenty of space with complete tree coverage. Benches, chairs, sink, table, clothesline, kindling, fire pit, all on site over looking a river. There is a short path leading you down to the shallow river where we spent all day fishing and catching bass and fall fish. We saw some crawfish around the rocks and once in while would see a neighbor floating down the river or taking a swim. All in all it is a great sight and I promise you can’t go wrong with choosing this for your trip.

Shelmar Acres was a very pleasant Hipcamp site located on a working farm. The site is private and peaceful, the perfect spot to unwind! Our hosts could not have been nicer or more helpful. Mitch took time out of his busy schedule to take us on a very interesting and educational tour of his farm. We will plan to come back with our trailer in the future. We definitely recommend this site to others.

I enjoyed camping at Hickory Hollow Farms. The host was very inviting. It was nice to have a picnic table and fire ring as well as a supply of firewood. We had plenty of open space in a quiet area. I would recommend camping at this hip camp.

About

The Appalachian Trail, or AT for short, is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world, extending across 14 states between Mount Katahdin in Maine and Springer Mountain in Georgia. Passing through eight different national forests, six national park units and numerous state parks means there are plenty of opportunities to explore, whether you're a casual day hiker or a thru-hiker set on conquering all 2,190 miles.

Although not the exact mid-point, Harpers Ferry, WV is considered to be the halfway marker along the trail with the headquarters of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy located nearby. If you're looking for the state with the largest portion of the path, head to Virginia where you'll find more than a quarter of the trail lies there. If it's elevation you desire, head for the highest point along the trail at Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is situated 6,643 feet above sea level.

Besides hiking, points along the trail offer many chances for camping, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. Limited portions of the trail may also offer rock climbing, biking, horseback riding, and if you're visiting in the winter, snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
