Tips for Snagging a Campsite Reservation
- Reservations can be up to nine months in advance. Make your peak season reservation as soon as you know your dates, or arrive early to grab any unreserved sites.
- Try to visit the year-round park during the week or in winter to easily secure a campsite.
- If you’re traveling light, opt for a primitive walk-in campsite with just a quarter-mile to a half-mile walk in.
When to Go
Peak season from mid-May to mid-September draws the largest crowds, especially over weekends and when temperatures rise. The park store is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Only the main campground is open year-round, while other camping areas are closed from November to mid-March. Rainbow trout fishing is best from November to May, when the lake is frequently restocked, while cutthroat trout fishing is best in April and May. Fall is a good time to see migrating birds.
