This land has passed through many families but was first "managed" by Salish Indians who burned the prairie and harvested native plants for food, medicine, clothing, charms and more for 10,000 years. When European settlers arrived in the 1850s, burning the prairie all but ceased and that, along with the introduction of many new exotic species of animals, crop plants and weeds, began the degradation of the landscape. Over time our site was used to graze sheep and then raise pheasants (from 1944-1999). It was slated for housing development but several citizens rose up and prevented that from happening. Now the Pacific Rim Institute, a private nonprofit organization is the steward of this precious jewel of central Whidbey and the Pacific Northwest. We have a five-acre remnant prairie with over 80 species of native plants - critical to the restoration of degraded lands throughout the Salish Sea region. We have over two miles of walking trails for you. They traverse our prairie, savannas and forests. The land is full of color when the native wildflowers bloom from early spring through early autumn. We have a Native Plant Center where we grow up to 50 species of rare native plants. Ask us for a tour.

A little about Orting - Nestled in the foothills of Mt Rainier between the Puyallup and Carbon Rivers, Orting is a quaint Turn-of-the-Century village that you will not forget. The town center is anchored by three parks filled with giant maples and evergreens. You will be awed by the view of Mt. Rainier from Washington Avenue. The levees on the east and west sides of town are perfect for hikes along the rivers. The 20 mile Foothills Trail meanders right through the middle of town and then takes you along the Carbon River levee. Bike, walk, take the stroller and the family pet. Enjoy the turn-of-the-century architecture of downtown and eat at one of the 15 restaurants. If your timing is right you can take part in the Daffodil festival and parade the first Saturday of April. The Kingsmen Car show comes to town the third Saturday in June. Then there is the Pumpkin festival the second weekend of October. Finally the year is capped off with the Christmas festival throughout December. Then there are the many foot and bike races that take place on the foothills trail throughout the year. Other days just wind blown tree white noise. 🏕 Site Overview: (See the site map in photos) Valley Ridge Lookout – Largest, the upper site, w/TeePee, big views, outdoor sink; cold shower, with outhouse nearby. West Perch – Smaller site with water and power, tucked along the western edge, pull through parking. Closed for season/construction on going. Side Step – Message only/ I gotta move some shit out the way if you really want this flat dirt hill slot. Gully Vista – A hike-in, tent/hammock site, via a narrow trail down into the gully. Seen most guests tent camp or bring vans. If your trailering, and the trailer weighs more than your 2WD tow vehicle, this place isn’t the best match. ✅ What Makes This Place Special: Big night south skies—great for moon/stargazing. Backs up to 150+ acres of state timberlans. Hunters: check regulations. The new cut link trail connects the camp to the Howell Lake trail. Tight trails at first then opens up. We’ve got firewood— not perfectly dry but it burns. kindling needed in wet seasons. Trash-free land. Please keep it clean, you're welcome to burn paper products and I encourage you to buy more of them and please pack other waste out with you. ⚠️ A Few Notes: Steep drops —stay alert, especially at night. 1-mile dirt driveway is bumpy—take it slow. New 2022 Well, Fresh water, but I can't legally recommend drinking it since it is still a temporary water setup. Can fill tanks directly from the well if asked. It is located in a quiet little neighborhood, about 6 miles from Langley & 6 miles from Freeland.. This land has passed through many families but was first "managed" by Salish Indians who burned the prairie and harvested native plants for food, medicine, clothing, charms and more for 10,000 years. When European settlers arrived in the 1850s, burning the prairie all but ceased and that, along with the introduction of many new exotic species of animals, crop plants and weeds, began the degradation of the landscape. Over time our site was used to graze sheep and then raise pheasants (from 1944-1999). It was slated for housing development but several citizens rose up and prevented that from happening. Now the Pacific Rim Institute, a private nonprofit organization is the steward of this precious jewel of central Whidbey and the Pacific Northwest. We have a five-acre remnant prairie with over 80 species of native plants - critical to the restoration of degraded lands throughout the Salish Sea region. We have over two miles of walking trails for you. They traverse our prairie, savannas and forests. The land is full of color when the native wildflowers bloom from early spring through early autumn. The town center is anchored by three parks filled with giant maples and evergreens. You will be awed by the view of Mt. Rainier from Washington Avenue. The levees on the east and west sides of town are perfect for hikes along the rivers. The 20 mile Foothills Trail meanders right through the middle of town and then takes you along the Carbon River levee. Bike, walk, take the stroller and the family pet. Enjoy the turn-of-the-century architecture of downtown and eat at one of the 15 restaurants. If your timing is right you can take part in the Daffodil festival and parade the first Saturday of April. The Kingsmen Car show comes to town the third Saturday in June. Then there is the Pumpkin festival the second weekend of October. Finally the year is capped off with the Christmas festival throughout December. Then there are the many foot and bike races that take place on the foothills trail throughout the year. Side Step – Message only/ I gotta move some shit out the way if you really want this flat dirt hill slot. Gully Vista – A hike-in, tent/hammock site, via a narrow trail down into the gully. Seen most guests tent camp or bring vans. If your trailering, and the trailer weighs more than your 2WD tow vehicle, this place isn’t the best match. ✅ What Makes This Place Special: Big night south skies—great for moon/stargazing. Backs up to 150+ acres of state timberlans. Hunters: check regulations. The new cut link trail connects the camp to the Howell Lake trail. Tight trails at first then opens up. We’ve got firewood— not perfectly dry but it burns. kindling needed in wet seasons. Trash-free land. Please keep it clean, you're welcome to burn paper products and I encourage you to buy more of them and please pack other waste out with you. ⚠️ A Few Notes: Steep drops —stay alert, especially at night. 1-mile dirt driveway is bumpy—take it slow. New 2022 Well, Fresh water, but I can't legally recommend drinking it since it is still a temporary water setup. Can fill tanks directly from the well if asked. Tents can be pitched under four apple trees close to a fire pit for cooking. Beautiful area with horses and livestock to see in the neighborhood. A Blueberry Farm is across the street on Veazie picking around August. A Christmas Trees farm is across the street on SE 384th. Eagles, hawks, robins, doves, owls, and hummingbirds visiting hillside flower garden, are a few of the birds for your enjoyment. Check in is at 4:00 check out at 11:00 am, early check in is possible. Five quests are free with up to 2 more for a $10 dollar per person. Pets allowed on leash as there are wild animals on site. Modern Bathroom with cotton towels, soap, shampoo and conditioner, two sinks, shower with a claw foot bath tub, seven foot long, bathroom might be shared with other guests. A separate room with fridge and microwave, ALL Cleaned after each person just because we are really careful hosts.  Campsite faces a Christmas Tree Farm and cows in a field.  Traffic noise possible as Veazie Cumberland is a main two lane road 250 feet from camp site. Two State parks within four miles. Four miles to the town of Enumclaw.  We have a 3 or 6 person tent for rent, a queen air mattress, sleeping bags if needed as well all at reasonable rental prices. The *Purple Cottage* -- was found & salvaged (recycled!)-- moved onto the back of my property in 2012. This 16 X 12' place has been my studio in the past, but has offered overflow for friends & ; family. Nestled in the woods and ever-so-private, the cottage has a pull-out double futon, plus a small sleeping loft and can accommodate 1 -2 nicely (we will consider 3 if you have a small child, but it would be a tight fit!... There is a very small sleeping loft in the cottage.). There is a “en suite kitchen in the cottage that has a small fridge, microwave, and two burner stovetop cooking unit. The cottage offers privacy in a wooded garden setting. The bathhouse, with hot shower, vanity and; toilet --are all steps away (and covered) from the main cabin. The Purple Cottage sits on a shy wooded acre, with greenbelt buffers all around, maximizing the sense of privacy. our vintage Shasta Trailer across the driveway of the Purple Cottage is currently used as a music studio (and rarely as family/guest overflow), and I have my own small Artist Studio located also on the back of the property. Even with all the little enclave of buildings, The Purple Cottage retains a private feel all to itself, with reliable Wi-Fi available at the cottage. . It is located in a quiet little neighborhood, about 6 miles from Langley & 6 miles from Freeland.. Private beach access is across the road and a 15 minute walk up the street, where you can beach comb & explore the shoreline out at our little point. The private deck off the side of the Purple Cottage offers views of the gardens & flora, and has a little gas barbecue. There is also a delightful hot tub on the deck, which is a wonderful feature. An outdoor kitchen on the edge of the woods allows a roomier “camp cooking” experience with Colman stove & cold running water (season permitting). We are located 6 miles from the picturesque town of Langley and equal distance from Freeland, on the south end of Whidbey. Our area is very *bike-able* and either direction will get you to town! The Purple Cottage offers a rustic retreat in a place that feels far away, but is an hour & a half from the bustling city of Seattle!

Jenel and Khohay were very communicative hosts! It’s very clear they put a lot of love and character into their property. We loved the farm fresh eggs for breakfast in the morning and would highly recommend the sauna as an add on! We enjoyed waking up to the rooster “roostering”, the sheep walking the path near the tiny house, and feeding the goats! The deck was lovely for making s’mores and we appreciated having the outdoor fireplace. The layout of the tiny home was really comfortable and cozy. The puppies were a huge highlight of our trip and were absolute sweethearts as well and it was nice to love on them in the communal bunkhouse.

What a beautiful view! The cabin was so cute and cozy with everything we needed. There were even some welcoming amenities for our pup, which we found very thoughtful. The cabins around us were all occupied although we didn’t hear or see anyone else the whole weekend (but it was winter). Our self check in was easy as could be and everyone we encountered working at the resort was very kind and warm.

The revamped bus was the coziest rainy day refuge. I was sad the rain kept me from fully exploring and appreciating the fantastical campgrounds. But it was so easy to be completely content at the bus-turned-cabin site because of the privacy and having everything you need for a proper glamp, even in a downpour. All the details are so thoughtful, from the tea kettle to the outdoor compost toilet, the outdoor stringlights to the indoor power outlets (used sparingly on a battery)-- I honestly can't wait to come back and *actually* use the spring water hot tub. Missed opportunity when the universe gave me a surprise puppy to adopt the day of the trip! Gary was incredibly understanding and even invited us to play with his own pups loose on the campgrounds! Koda and I appreciate all the space you made for us, and we will be back very soon!

This is such a special place! The Wanderbus was cozy and quirky and perfect. More than warm enough and Louis the Third is an immaculate toilet. I took advantage of the hot tub both nights and it’s such a great perk. Definitely try the tangerine essential oil stay with it! I came to take pictures and get some quiet reading time and it didn’t disappoint. I would recommend it so highly (as long as you don’t book when I want to come back!)

Great spot on the middle of the island. Quiet and peaceful. No power but clean and dry. Fire pit offered a great spot for an evening campfire. Very clean, cots for sleeping. Bring headlamps. Running water, shower and toilet clean and about 60 - 80 yds from the cabin. Great host and spot!

This is the best hipcamp I've ever been to. It was so quiet, the camper was extremely cozy and well stocked, and the spot was very private. The off grid hot tub was unique and well worth the extra fee! The whole campground is a very fun and creative space and you can really tell how much love and care Gary and crew have put into this place. I'll be back for summer camping!

Gary was so attentive and welcoming! Even though I came during a rainy time, the land was beautiful and whimsical. The staff there were all so accommodating and helped with anything I needed (firewood, the hot tub, heaters). The community kitchen was sooo much fun to use and the shower was amazing! It was fun to walk around and see the bunnies and chickens as well as see how hard the staff work to create more fun amenities for the future. Gary mills the wood himself and you can see how all of the structures are such a labor of love!

Weekend Trip to Pipe Lake Cabin

The cabin was larger than I expected! You enter into a large room with the main bed (bedding included), pullout couch, armchair and fireplace. Then there is the kitchen area with a good size dining table. Bathroom is right off the kitchen. No shower but that didn't bother us. Basic amenities for the kitchen is all provided and there are plenty of extra blankets. Just a PSA, your door code will be sent 30 minutes before the check in, we found ourselves worrying as the time got closer and closer!

Greater Seattle

Island County
