Located about an hour from Olympia, Tacoma and the Olympic National Forest. Hipcampers that stay at Island Base Camp will find themselves in a large grassy spot surrounded by evergreens and maple trees. Within 15 minutes are 3 places to launch boats, kayaks, etc., along with some beach access trails. Many hiking opportunities in the area. Berry picking and fresh apples in the summer on the property. If you are lucky, you will be greeted (and possibly herded) at some point by 2 friendly aussies that roam freely. Ducks and cats also live here. Saturday's 10-noon is a community Farmer's market at the island's community center. Don't miss Daisy Hill's cinnamon rolls, get there early. Shelton has many many activities and events going on all summer such as Oyster Fest, logging show, car shows, farmers markets, dalia and lavender farms, races at the Ridge motorsport, Vance Creek Railriders, also, on the island you can tour the wildcat sanctuary. The lands of Camp MoxyJo's were such fun from vintage glamping trailers and camper vans to multiple kitsch-filled common areas for communal cooking, play & hanging out. Having grown up in the 1960s, I felt I was immersed in joyful memories of my young adulthood everywhere I walked on the Camp MoxyJo's grounds. My young grandchildren loved roaming the campground, feeding the goats, and being introduced to the art of darts--intergenerational memory making.

If you like communal-style arrangements with a strong sense of restorative and connection with the land, this place is great. I enjoyed the dried herbs for mixing custom tea blends, community gathering spaces, meandering trail through the forest and wetlands, and incredible flower garden and orchard. The vintage camper itself was clean and comfortable, with good mattress and pillows. Kateen is also a great host, meeting us and providing a small tour at the start. Portable toilets are not my favorite, but they were well-kept, with a hand-washing sink with soap available. I could see coming back and staying for more than one night and would recommend to others.

Amazing farm stay! Kateen has the most beautiful farm and it felt like living in a magical fairyland. Flowers and lush green plants in every direction. Everything in the common spaces and campers are clean and well maintained. The bed was a little creaky but it was comfortable and I slept very well. I felt extremely safe and comfortable. It was super easy to get to Port Townsend from the property, I will absolutely come back!

We had a wonderful stay in the trailer! It was comfortable, well-equipped, and had everything we needed for a relaxing getaway. The place is actually much bigger than it looks in the photos, which was a great surprise. The amenities were excellent, and our kids especially loved feeding the goats — such a fun and memorable experience for them. Joanna was super responsive and made everything smooth from start to finish. Everything was clean, cozy, and thoughtfully arranged, which made our stay so easy and enjoyable. We would definitely recommend this place, especially for families with children.

A quiet and well-appointed place for some time alone. I was looking for somewhere to unwind away from a computer screen and to get some writing and thinking done; this was exactly what I wanted. There's a hammock and a good table for writing in the camper. I slept well and ate well and got some really good work done. I wish I could have stayed a third night.

I stayed in one of the campers for five nights while attending a dance retreat in Port Townsend. This place was just lovely all around. Hot outdoor(ish) shower & gorgeous vegetable/flower/fruit farm you can harvest from. There's poop everywhere because it's a farm but it wasn't a problem, and I didn't have any trouble with the geese and turkeys. Sweet tea room, library, greenhouses, foot soak.... total gem.

What a lovely weekend I had at Tyler's adorable vintage trailer. Nestled in the deep forest of Harstine Island, it feels a million miles away from civilization and yet you have all the comforts and amenities of home. The trailer is very comfortable, the porta poty was clean and actually smells good and the outdoor shower is incredible; Tyler has created a truly special retreat. I had a great time exploring the island and will definitely be a return camper!

Greater Seattle

Washington's biggest city offers urban fun within striking distance of serious nature. Despite its urban vibes at the Space Needle and Chihuly Garden and Glass, Seattle is chock-full of wooded parks, including the 534-acre Discovery Park on the eastern banks of Puget Sound.

Island County

Named for its many islands, this county on Puget Sound encompasses nine islands in total, including sprawling Whidbey Island—at the northernmost stretch of the sound—and Camano Island. Both islands are tourist hotspots, with tons of state parks and campgrounds, many of them right on the water. Whidbey in particular is known for its thriving arts scene.

The Kitsap Peninsula and Bainbridge Island

Across Puget Sound from Seattle, the Kitsap Peninsula and Bainbridge Island offer a variety of outdoor activities, with plenty of parks, hiking trails, marinas, and campgrounds. This region is also great for lovers of the arts and history, with museums and galleries dedicated to Native cultures, naval history, and the arts.

The Olympic Peninsula

On the opposite side of Puget Sound from the Seattle metro area, the Olympic Peninsula features some of the region's best opportunities for hiking and water sports.
