If a "back to nature" primitive camping experience is what you seek, this is the best place to do it! You'll have 47 acres of mature woods, with rolling meadow, some hills, fresh springs, and a wide creek in beautiful Grayson Co, VA. Best of all, you will have lots of privacy and a spectacular star-filled sky on clear nights.
Even though the property is located less than ten miles from the nearest town, here there is peace and quiet. Feel free to explore the entire property and enjoy the freedom to pitch your camp at the location that suits you! Perhaps you like the sound of a babbling creek and will want to set up camp at the flat along the creek; or perhaps you want to see the amazing view from the very top of the hill and camp there...or nestle your site in the beautiful meadow in between. The choice is yours.
Expect to hike into forest and through tall grasses; there's even a bit of rock you can climb if you wish. Overall elevation change from the bottom lands to the very top of the hill is about +210 feet. Plenty of flatter land in-between.
If exploring 47 acres isn't enough to keep you busy, it's a ten minute drive to the New River access where you can canoe, kayak, fish or swim. Or head into town and pick up a book at the local book shop.
Access to the property will require a 4WD vehicle, or you may simply park by the entrance at the road and just hike it in. There are no amenities here, and the property often has vegetation (taller grasses) which you might want to cut to make your own site, which is allowed. Photos show what others have done in previous seasons to clear a space for camping. Campsites are generally not cleared of grass as shown. Hipcampers beware, this is rough, back-to-nature, old school style camping.
There's often plenty of wildlife to see and hear although hunting, trapping, etc. is prohibited to Hipcampers. Fishing wild trout from the creek is allowed!

We have 7+ very private acres along the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, which has been in our family for over 50 years and where we currently live.
You will arrive at our house, and the campsite is approximately 150 yds down the river trail. The campsite is completely private from our house.
We are native plant enthusiasts and are fortunate to have many native species of trees and plants on our property. There’s great fishing, hiking, kayaking and canoeing from the property and also plenty more nearby.
We’re only a few miles outside of Strasburg which offers great antique shops, dining, and a brewery with live music on weekends.
Five night maximum permitted. We prefer that guests arrive before dark.
**Note that the North Fork is a shallow river with a slate bottom. If you plan to wade, fish or swim in the river, you may want to bring some sturdy shoes to wear in the river.

We really enjoyed the site. It has a beautiful view and perfect location to enjoy Massanutten resort. Vicki was very helpful and friendly. Firepit and firewood being available was a great bonus! We will be back when traveling this way!

The campsite is incredible! It has a great table and TWO charcoal grills!!! The fire pit is fabulous, the grate swivels instead of flips so it’s really easy to cook food! The dock was so fun to enjoy and we can’t wait to come back in the spring when it’s warmer!!

The name Awesome View doesn’t even do it justice! We stayed last minute overnight and missed the sunset but if you can get there before sunset I would highly recommend it! The sunrise however was absolutely stunning! There are two horses on the property and they were a nice surprise when we woke up in the morning. My husband spoke with the owner and said she was very sweet and I had the pleasure of speaking with the owner’s father who lives up the road behind the property. He was so nice as he pulled in to make sure we were enjoying our stay. I would absolutely recommend a stay. It is also a short ride to the Skyline Dr through Shenandoah national park filled with a plethora of scenic overlooks. Perfect location! We would definitely stay again when we are in the area.

This spot is a gem and the hosts are gracious with many other amenities. I would highly recommend this spot for 1-3 people or 2 people and a dog looking for a waterfront site for a more relaxed camping experience. "More relaxed" because the tent platform makes tent setup easy, and you don't have to worry about issues with the ground, and John and Mary have firewood and a fire pit ready for use. I'll be coming back soon.

Campsite was accurate described. Host was gracious and communicated quickly. Location was centrally located to lots of areas. Luray to the north, Elkton just around the corner, and Waynesboro to the south. Campsite was nice. Even with houses closer by, it was quiet and felt secluded. Except for maybe some nearby roosters to wake you up. Their horses loved to say hello especially once they learned you have apples for them. Would definitely stay here again.

This was a great spot to set up for the weekend. Ample, flat space. The stand up bar was extremely useful and well thought out. The fire pit was a great size. We let the hosts know ahead of time that we were interested in purchasing firewood and they had it waiting for us, and they covered it from the weather. Port-a-potty close by and it was what you’d expect, well stocked with TP and hand sanitizer. The river view was awesome and there was so much wildlife to see, and we were lucky enough to spot an otter. Recommend!
Worth noting:
-the drive down to the site is steep and a mix of gravel and pavement and finishing in grass, there is lots of hipcamp signage but heads up
-the train tracks are active and close

This camp sote was perfect for the colder fall weather. Not too much other campers, so we nearly had the place to ourselves. Yurt was the best feature, in my opinion. We got some rain both mornings and did not have to worry a bit. Got there late and were relieved we didn't have to set up tent and such. Campsite was nice with some easy water access you could rinse kitchenware off and even bath I can imagine during hot, humid summer months. Took a pair of waders just to fool around and discovered the creek bed to be relatively shallow. Take that as you wish with whatever activity you wish to pursue. Firepit was also decent, you could have a nice manageable fire. The only thing I would say that I would change different but cannot for obvious reasons is the train by the river. Pretty loud. Owner can't help it either, so he's at no fault. Other than that this is a great site.

Mary and John are so unbelievably welcoming. They’ve thought a lot about what campers need from the compost toilet to the outside shower. The view of the river is phenomenal and John offered to let us use kayaks. The platform is such a luxury.

We spent a peaceful night on Vickie's land. GPS took us right to the driveway, we pulled in to a nice level lot with picturesque surroundings and great views. The 30 amp hook-up was especially nice on a chilly late October night to run a small space heater. Our host was very responsive to all communications.

Hearts of gold! These folks are excellent hosts. Happy to have elec for this stay, a place to walk my dog, panoramic views, and star-filled nights. Grass was level. Even after a heavy rain and surprise October thunderstorm the field was dried out.
Restaurants in either direction (Shenandoah and Elkton), duckpin bowling, Bear Lithia farm market, Massanutten resort, local Stonewall park has walking paths, dog park, and more.
