Awesome spot for a weekend getaway. Peaceful, with plenty of space to explore. The pond was great for swimming, and the kids loved the boats and paddleboards. Perfect mix of fun and relaxing—definitely coming back.

Really easy to get to, arrived with a warm welcome and a guide around the area and the tent. It was everything we could have asked for. Jeff was literally the best he checked on us and brought us fresh fire wood. He even gave our kids some feed to give to the goats. We were able to take our kids on a paddle boat for the first time on the pond that was by our tent. It was super clean and super homie! Loved every minute!

1 night at Glamp like a Champ

I use HipCamp a lot and this place easily went to the top of my list of favorites!! You can’t find many places where your dog can just run around and safely do whatever they want. But then there was also AC and goats and a gorgeous view of the sunset and stars! And literally everything you could need for comfort and convenience. Towels, lanterns, cooking and eating utensils, wifi, etc, etc! My pup and I were both very happy here and we can’t wait to come back and stay for longer!

Peaceful and beautiful. Stayed for one night end of May. It was hot and we camped in a shady spot. Thankful for the wheel carts. Randall was a great a host and we enjoyed the fire he started. We survived our first thunderstorm and slept peacefully. Will be back in fall!

This place was amazing! Melissa met us as we pulled in. My two little ones immediately adored her. She was so nice and welcoming. I was honestly blown away with how secluded and “in the woods out in the middle of nowhere” it felt. The boys (6 and 3) and I haven’t done a real camping trip yet and I wanted to do kind of a trial run first. It honestly couldn’t have went better. They said it felt like we went through a portal! We had plenty of fire wood to roast marshmallows and hot dogs and the boys loved the teepee! Thank you again Melissa for such an amazing experience!

I had an amazing experience at Sonja’s place! The views were stunning, and it felt like the perfect escape peaceful and relaxing, yet surprisingly close to Dallas. This was my first time camping and I went solo, so I was definitely feeling anxious, but the moment I arrived and met Sonja and her sweet daughter Olivia, I immediately felt safe and welcomed. Sonja went above and beyond to make sure everything was convenient and comfortable. She mowed the grass before I arrived and sprayed the bathroom for mosquitoes, which was a huge relief. The bathroom itself was stocked with everything I could possibly need bug sprays, fire starters, a lighter, batteries, OFF! spray, sanitizing wipes, and more. Honestly, I regretted stopping at Walmart for those items Sonja had it all covered! One of the highlights of my stay was getting to meet her baby goats they were so much fun to play with! And to top it all off, she even gifted me fresh eggs, which was such a kind and thoughtful touch. This was truly a special experience, and I’m already planning to come back hopefully next time with my husband. If you have kids, this is a very family friendly spot where you’ll feel safe, cared for, and have a great time. Highly, highly recommend!

Great venue, we’ve been multiple times and had a blast as usual! Father/Son campout this time and we had such a memorable time. Even a short downpour couldn’t keep spirits down. Walt and his family (the owners) do an amazing job keeping up the property.

In 2013, we bought our 13 acres from a larger parcel of land that had been owned and farmed by the Snider family for 150 years. (Note that we live on Snider Lane). The Sniders played an important part in the development of our town, Lucas, and surrounding schools. The rest of the land has been sold to two families, and all three purchasers (that includes us!) are establishing small family farms. Hurray! Plus the Snider's old house and barn next door are being renovated by the new owners! Since 2013, we have brought in water and electricity to the land, built fences, a house and several barns. We have a flock of chickens, a bunch of loud, nosey Nubian dairy goats, 2 cats and 2 dogs. We farm organic vegetables, and have planted some fruit trees. Welcome to Texas Safari Camp Come escape to a heavily wooded 31 acre pristine wildlife habitat. Only one hour east of Dallas but it feels like another world. At the end of a one lane rock road- this is a very secluded property. It is perfect for tent camping groups and individuals, has a very positive vibe and is more peaceful than most state parks. It adjoins a 950 acre wildlife park with 900 exotic animals. Many can be seen from the road or you can pay to drive through and feed the animals. Your host is Randall Oliver. He has been organizing group campouts (with as many as 40 people) for years and enjoys hosting, bringing people together and creating new friendships and memories. Everyone is welcome and campers are treated like family. He can teach your kids to kayak and build a camp fire. You can fish for largemouth bass, cat, crappy and bluegill in the two ponds and swim, paddle kayaks and paddle boards, hike the jungle trail and socialize around the campfires. There are no designated campsites. You can camp anywhere except between the green building and the front pond. No vehicles are allowed back on the property. Off road wagons are provided to help haul your gear. Front pond camping areas are 30-100 yards from parking area. The rear pond is more secluded but farther from the parking and outhouse. There are four fire pits around the front pond and one next to the rear pond. The tiny handcrafted Hummingbird Tree House overlooks the front pond and features a queen bed, a smaller bed in the loft, electricity, lights, a fan, screened operable windows and outdoor table and chairs on the elevated deck. There is no heat or air conditioning in the tree house. You must bring your own sleeping bags, blankets and pillows. No food, smoking or pets allowed in the tree house. There is a rustic outhouse with a modern composting toilet, sink, lights, soap, etc. and a nearby cold water outdoor shower (no privacy), sink and faucet.

Camp Tonkawa Woods & Horse Camp

In the early 1900’s an iconic red barn was built near the hilltop along the road between the old Mt. Zion community and Collinsville. Later in the 1900’s, the land was mostly abandoned by its owners, but not by the local fishermen! They knew its woodland fishing pond never dried up, and so was able to support a better population of fish. They also dumped a cornucopia of old motorcycles, cars and farm equipment in the front field. What else were you supposed to do with scrap metal in North Texas horse country? In 2002 the Holtzman family purchased the 35 acre tract of land. They dug a front pond for swimming and paddling, buried the scrap metal (although occasional bits of history still work their way up!), restored and brought horses back to the barn, and began consulting with local biologists about supporting native wildlife. April Holtzman launched Camp Tonkawa Outdoor Learning Center on the property to provide a beautiful, safe place for families to explore and learn about nature. Camp Tonkawa continues to host overnight and day camps with educational programing organized around various themes including: Native American culture, nature awareness, basic camping skills, primitive survival, organic gardening, herbology, outdoor cooking, western days, and horsemanship. We also host field trips and frequently conduct Girl Scout journeys for all levels in the "It's Your Planet, Love it!" series. Due to Covid-19, which limited working with groups for our educational programing, we joined Hip Camp where families who could isolate in nature together on our property.
