The Charmadillo is a 44-acre nature retreat tucked into the rolling hills of the Texas Hill Country, between Kerrville, Comfort, and Bandera. Stay in one of seven cozy A-frame cabins, our vintage RV or bell tent, or bring your own tent and settle into the land.
While you're here, wander the trails, cool off in the stock tank pools, sweat in the sauna, swing in the hammock grove, take in the dark night skies, or simply do very little at all. Shared amenities include two stock tank pools, a sauna, outdoor shower, shower house, bathrooms, hammock grove, yoga deck, commercial kitchen, and lounge with Wi-Fi.
The Charmadillo was created as a place to slow down, reconnect, and spend time in relationship with nature. Expect quiet mornings, birdsong, big Hill Country views, plenty of room to wander, and a relaxed, communal atmosphere where the land is very much part of the experience.
We're tucked away enough to feel removed while still making a great base for exploring the region. Lost Maples State Natural Area, Garner State Park, and Enchanted Rock are about an hour away, with Hill Country State Natural Area about 35 minutes away. Kerrville, Comfort, Bandera, and the surrounding Hill Country offer swimming holes, wineries, honky-tonks, restaurants, bars, and plenty more to explore.

New fully furnished cabins are available to rent too! Kitchens/kitchenettes, full bathrooms, etc - Big Tex, Lil' Tex and The Ren Shack, sleep 4 - 9 people each depending on the cabin size.
Glamping vintage trailers are available too, and are also fully furnished with electric, kitchens and bathrooms, and sleep 2-3 people each.
Or bring your own small to mid-size RV, tent, or car/truck/van and pick a cool cleared or primitive site of your choice, camp anywhere. We also have 3 electric 30 Amp hookup available.
The camp is surrounded by farms and ranches, wineries offering music options (one is dog friendly!). Lake Conroe is 20 minutes to the east.
Amenities include a cowboy pool, courtyard seating and camp fire pit, hot showers, bathrooms (currently port-a-potties), fiber wifi, and a potable water/filling station/wash station.
We are in the customer service business, meaning we make it easy to camp (and celebrate!) with our beautiful 4-season canvas glamp tents and glamp vintage trailers. Just drive up to your tent and get ready to relax. All tents are fully furnished with made beds and critical supplies, and have picnic tables, chairs around the fire rings, firewood, and charcoal grills. Our premier platform tents also have electric, heat, Keurig coffee pots, coffee and more! Vintage trailers have everything you need as well inside and out. Reservations are available on both Hipcamp and Airbnb. We even offer to decorate for you in advance for special celebration occasions.

We offer a uniquely secluded setting with stunning views of the Chisos Mountains. Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away.
Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism.
West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program.
Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths!
Our intention is to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

Guests should expect a rustic stay designed for rest, simplicity, and connection with nature.
Anchorbase Retreat sits on working agricultural land, and the surrounding countryside is part of the experience. You may see open pastures, wildlife, and hear natural country sounds. Some areas of the property offer views toward Cedar Creek Lake, making it a peaceful place to relax outdoors, enjoy sunsets, and stargaze.
While the setting feels removed and quiet, the retreat is still conveniently located near local attractions and essentials, including King’s Creek Country Club, local restaurants and food spots, grocery stores, a nearby brewery, Zoofari, and Cedar Creek Lake recreation.

1 night at Anchorbase Retreat
I stayed at Anchorbase and had a wonderful time. The property is extensive woth trails heading back quite a ways. Walking the trails was beautiful and exactly what I wanted when escaping the city. It's a plus that it's right off a local highway and so easy to get to. If you want coffee or forgot anything, town is less than 15 minutes away too. The owners are sweethearts and may have what you need to. They welcomed me in person, showed me the lands and gave me tips and then left with the offer to respond to any requests by phone. As a solo woman camper, I also appreciate that they have an ability to lock the access gate giving me total security at night. I will be back for sure!

We had an amazing camping experience! The campsite was incredibly private and secluded, surrounded by beautiful trees that made us feel like we had our own little piece of nature. It was peaceful, quiet, and the perfect place to relax and disconnect.
One of the highlights of our stay was spending the evening looking up at the beautiful night sky. It was such a special experience and gave us the opportunity to create wonderful memories together as a family. If you’re looking for a peaceful getaway in nature, we highly recommend this campground!

The campsite was so cute and whimsical! We stayed in the Milky Way tent and the kids LOVED IT. We squeezed two adults and two young children in there but it was definitely tight for sleeping. It was exactly as pictured, so fun and cozy.
The amenities and hosts were wonderful and so so sweet! We got to pet the goats and chickens, and got some fresh produce from their garden. We completed the scavenger hunt - it was super kid friendly and they loved the adventure! We could not get the kids off the zip line or ping pong table, but the playground itself needed a little TLC.
Our trip was on a VERY hot weekend (115 heat index) and the AC in our tent had a hard time keeping up at the hottest part of the day. A cold shower at the end of the day was exactly what we needed (even though hot was an option). But the evenings and overnight were perfect!
Things we wished we had that we will remember to bring next time:

*baby wipes (just to clean off between showers)
Overall, it was a blast, even with the outrageous heat. We will absolutely come back again!

We loved our time at 3 dry Wells Ranch! We stayed in the sunset Hill Bell tent and it was perfect. We fit 3 people and 2 dogs comfortably. The view was amazing, and truly saw the most beautiful sunset. We felt secluded and it was super quiet! Just great place to unwind. Hosts were amazing, William brought us a second generous stack of wood we purchased for the pit. Well worth the money. Thank you!

My gal friend and I had a great time at Sound Garden. We had the campground all to ourselves which made for lots of music playing and exploring the little trails throughout the grounds. 🎶🌱
Agarita was very comfortable, especially since it was a step up from the usual tent/air mattress situation. Very clean and cozy.
Loved our visits from the ground animals, Rita and Cinnamon!
Could have easily wandered over to Blanco State Park for some water relief, but we had enough activities and the weather was beautiful, so we stayed put.
Kasey was a great host and the campground (including the outhouse) was super well kept.

This was my third time staying at the Charmadillo and first time staying in the Yurt. The entire property is beautiful and I cannot say enough good things about it.
The yurt itself is tucked away in the camping area of the property. It was spacious, clean, and relaxing. I would definitely stay in the yurt again and will be back to the Charmadillo hopefully soon.

We loved coming to this secluded spot. It felt like a haven. Very quiet, no campers right next to us. Having the bell tent was fantastic so we didn't have to bring the extras of tent and mattress and bedding. This bed was really comfortable and clean. The outhouse was a short walk and also extremely clean. Frew wood bundle each night was also a blessing. We will be back.
