Crater Lake Woodlands is part of the historic Katydid Ranch. Once owned by Boise Cascade who used it both for growing seedlings to replant logged mountain sides and as a vacation getaway for their executives, the story of Katydid Ranch goes back to the early 1900's when it's owner named "Katy" used it as the "half-way" overnight lodging for horse & buggy guests traveling to Crater Lake from the Rogue Valley. Leaving the valley at the crack of dawn, they could arrive at "Katy's" by nightfall, in time for a meal and sound mountain sleep. They'd hitch up at dawn and make it to Crater Lake by nightfall. Historically, the first residents were the Rogue River Takelma and Latgawa native Americans. Latgawa lived in the Rogue Valley of interior southwest Oregon. In their own language "Latgawa" means "those living in the “uplands," though they were also known as the Walumskni by the neighboring Klamath tribes. Specifically, Ha-ne-sakh. The Latgawa were one of two peoples who spoke the Takelma language. They were hunters, gatherers, weavers and fished the Rogue River. They were known to have a stationary settlement and trading post at the Katydid Ranch location. Their tribes lived in the upper Rogue River area extending beyond Prospect and Union up to Crater Lake. Since we've owned the Ranch, we've maintained the custom of welcoming overnight guests and at the same time, we continue to honor the protected wildlife designation given to it back in the 50's. Wildlife viewing is one the delights we share with our guests. Please be mindful of native wildlife keeping dogs on leash so as to avoid chasing and barking at wildlife. Thank you. The animals here include, but are not limited to black tail deer, elk, fox, coyote, ringtailed cat, raccoon, skunk, and also typically farther up the mountain are the elusive mountain lions and black bear which we have never spotted on our property. The ponds and surrounding area are home to migratory to the Oregon Pond turtle, Canada geese, quail, wild turkeys, various owls including the great horned owls, hawks, cranes and eagles. Our pond bird watcher friends spotted Common Mergansers, Ring Necked Ducks, Canada Geese…and a Loon. The bull frogs orchestrate the evening and can be heard at times throughout the day. Katydid Ranch is a wildlife sanctuary. The flora and fauna of the forest is abundant and diverse. This land is home to many native grasses, ferns, and berries, wild flowers, as well as many other edible and medicinal plants and numerous varieties of mushrooms. Beautiful spot! This Hipcamp has nice sites, a clean port-a-pottie, and a small, pretty garden to view. It is convenient to the freeway (and has freeway noise, which we didn’t hear with the windows closed). We were able to bike to town for our plays from here.

Weekend Trip to Wild Hare Farms

Brad and Jen met us as we arrived and guided us to our spot, which is the middle of a grassy area just behind their home. Sitting between their lovely animals, we spent two nights recovering from a 5 week cross country and through Oregon (twice) and Washington state. It was quiet enough and they have a great picnic area to use. We are a 33’ fifth wheel and we brought some limbs down as we came into the property. If you are at or larger than 13’3” height, I would speak to either Brad or Jen first to ensure those have been cut back so you can get in and out with damaging your roof or destroying their lovely trees and shrubs. Thanks, guys! We had a great stay with you.

The sites are great. The amenities mostly okay. The showers are not private, however. They do not feel safe, as anyone can walk in. Some of the shower stalls have curtains, but there are no lockable doors. Another issue is that they don’t have what they advertise as EV charging. It is an outlet that you can plug a trickle charger into, and you would have to park your car next to the communal kitchen in the middle of a walkway for days to charge. This is impractical and a lie at worst, a lack of knowledge and false advertisement at best.. They do NOT have what they emailed me saying they do, which is a standalone EV charging station. Charge your car before you get there, because otherwise you could be stranded. When I approached the camp host about this issue during normal business hours, they appeared inebriated on something and had no idea what I was asking. There was no understanding whatsoever. I walked away having no solution. This to me is careless and unprofessional.

Very comfortable and beautiful campsite. Don't forget a sleeping pad like me! Unless you have a hammock, you'll be pitching a tent on (level) gravel! On-site porta potty and propane shower, as well as a propane fire pit.

The space was gorgeous arriving after dark, (though make sure you bring enough lighting, the stairs can be a trip hazzard if youre not careful) and absolutely beautiful to explore in the morning. My pup loved the close creek access, the beautiful bridge, and the fun little nature trail. The facilities were clean and though I didnt have time to use the shower it was nice to have available! Private, safe, beautiful, and exactly the stop we needed on our drive north this year! We will be back! Thanks Marcus for being so responsive and helpful answering questions, the descriptions were thorough and helpful! My last piece of advice is just check for gravel in your tires as you leave, I had a little trouble with some extra sharp ones getting stuck on my way out.
