Weekend Trip to Pause || Eco-Retreat at Aramesh

I stayed at Lijahs Ridge with my dog, Bandit for 3 nights and could not have been happier. The site was absolutely beautiful with stunning views! There were no other campers while I was there and it felt like my very own private retreat. I enjoyed listening to the songbirds, the hoot owls and even the howling of coyotes at night but my absolute favorite were the horses that visited each evening as they made their way up and down the mountain, grazing along the way. I also came upon them while hiking at Tai Chi Hill while they were playing and it was a joy to watch. On my last day, they visited the campsite and stayed for over an hour. I think they may have fallen asleep as they stood very still for a long time with their eyes partially closed. The gelding is very curious and wants to investigate everything. I loved being able to interact with them. Tai Chi Hill is amazing but the best view is from the horse trail that winds on up the mountain so that you are looking down at the site. I enjoyed being able to hike without having to leave the property and saw a wide variety of plants and flowers including Trillium, Bloodroot, Woodland Stonecrop and May Apples in bloom. Jill and Sara are incredibly gracious hosts. It was a treat to get to meet them. There is a porta potty just below the site with a sink for hand washing and farther down the hill, fresh spring water is available. I will definitely be staying here again and can't recommend it enough!

Bull Mountain Ridge

The site's first appeal is the amazing view of Bull Mountain Ridge. Beautiful all year long, but particularly in late October when the leaves are in their richest colors. The site is roomy for small to mid-sized RVs and offers a private water hook-up, 30 amp, and 20 amp power outlets. It feels private and tucked away, but is very accessible to all of what the Asheville area has to offer. Downtown is a 15 minute drive; ride services and shuttles are both easy to secure and quite affordable. Additional parking is available for a fee. The backdrop of the site is forested and easy to relax in - the understory is maintained for guest use, providing cooling shade with a stunning view. I usually try to say hello to folks and make sure they get settled in alright, but let me know if you'd prefer just to come in and have privacy. Don't feel the need to come to the house unless you can't get a hold of me via text and you need assistance. I may not be available when you arrive, but I'll try to get back in touch with you as soon as I'm able. **Please be aware that this section of North Carolina has a particularly large population of American black bears. We had moved to this beautiful quiet country road the year before after spending 15 years in the hustle and bustle of West Asheville. When our neighbor put the land up for sale, we jumped at the chance to protect our view (we live across the street) and own another piece of the heaven we have come to call home. This land has a creek running through it, and is in a quiet, rural, residential area that is a mix of newcomers and families who have lived here for generations. The property has a secluded feel to it while being very conveniently located to the wonderful hiking, mountain biking, and trout fishing this area is famous for. We’re also very close to cycle shops, outfitters, groceries, restaurants, etc. We love it here and are excited to develop our plan for this space. We hope you will love it here too.

DuPont Bike Retreat is located 1/4 mile from the Fawn Lake Access area into DuPont State Forest. The DBR is 37 acres and has a pond with a dock and numerous camping sites available. The property used to hold Glass Feather Studio, which was a glass art studio and is now Glass Feather Lodge. The mountain view from the indoor porch is amazing and there are several places to relax and enjoy this view. There is an outdoor shower and bike wash station behind the lodge and two indoor bathrooms (one with shower) off the porch. The lower Pond Area of the property has a port-a-john near the pond. Starter bundles of firewood are included, and additional can usually be purchased on-site. Come enjoy the forest straight from your campsite!

Wild Mountain Way

Please talk to me before showing up. Helene hit us pretty hard, but I'm just about in a position to consider having guests again. The one mile drive was washed away and has only been passable via 4x4 vehicles with very confident drivers until I fixed it last week. A beautiful Red Oak tree flattened my airstream, just as I was about to sell it. (Insurance is of no use) We lost about 100 Trees. And a massive mudslide came down and has turned the beautiful creak into a deep and ugly scar. I'm not complaining. A lot of folks lost a lot more. I'm working my way through the Fireside campsite and while there is still work to do, please come and stay if you don't mind a little mess. Nearside is as it was, convenient, close to parking for 2WD and my cabin (so the WIFI is really good) Creakside was washed away, tent pitch, firepit, shower, picnic tables and chairs... Everything. I'm making that site available for free to any local volunteers and anyone up for helping out here. ... WildMountain Way is a bit of a conundrum. It's close to civilisation, but far from it. I found this little spot about four years ago and have been trying to tread gently, while making a nest in these stunning mountains. While some provisions are a given... Firewood, Spring Water, WiFi, Power for phone charging etc. You are still in a 5000 acre bowl and I have the last property in the holler. There are 3 pitches, MOST require AWD/4WD. All of the sites are about 300' from one another... it's a moderately steep but brisk hike. Fireside is the most social spot as it has the view and a big firepit with log slab seating and festoon lamps depending on the weather... All power up here is off grid. There is an occupied airstream about 100 feet away, but the chap in there is very quiet and cival. You are welcome to free camp anywhere on the land if you'd like more seclusion. Nearside is well... Near! It's the best option if you have a 2WD car. It's near to the parking, but also near (100'+) to the cabin I'm building. If you don't have an off road vehicle and let me know when you think you'll arrive, I'll do my best to be here and load anything heavy into my farm truck or quad bike...

We will soon be adding Forest Bathing. The frogs eat most of the mosquitos and the fireflies will provide the nightly entertainment from May till August.

Your car is parked within feet of your deck so Car Campers and experienced campers can enjoy. Designed with campers and dogs in mind. The deck is large (384 square feet) with a tin roof. Some roofs are full size, some 2/3rds and some 1/3rd, depending on what one wants for tent size or sun exposure. (See pictures of each site/deck) Each deck has sun and rain curtains for helping keep comfortable in normal weather. Dogs enjoy a two gate system so quests and dogs can be leash free and away from the road. All dog owners know to pick up after their pets. The human Private Porta John is cleaned weekly. Lights and electrical is 110V (3 prongs) for YOUR coffee pots, electric grills, mattress inflators, crockpots, electric blankets fans, etc. I do not provide any electrical appliances, other than counter area lighting and low level string lights so one can see the night sky. Many of my campers will "Pay it Forward" and leave coffee pots, hot plates, fans and such, so count yourself lucky to find a deck with them. I provide chairs, 5 gallons of fresh water in containers, fickle solar shower and pop up changing room along with an assortment of camping supplies from dog bowls to antimicrobial wipes. I provide various size garbage bags to manage your garbage. Your parking area is next to the deck. Black Mountain’s tasty restaurants are 4 miles away and All Trails is a great app for finding trails suited for your interest. Private decks on a dead-end gravel road mean hopefully the sounds will only be of nature. The conveniences of electricity, porta john, water, chairs, table, roof, cleaning supplies, rain curtains, and astounding views have my Glampers coming back often. Bigfoot Brook Campground

If you are looking for peace and tranquility in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this privately owned, primitive campground is a great place for your tent! Nestled in Medford Mountain at about 1200 ft., each creek-side slip has a magnificent view of the 1532 ft. mountaintop. Whether surrounded by spring blossoms or fall foliage, animal and leaf lovers often see turkeys at dawn and deer at dusk. Foxes and bobcats have also been spotted on occasion. It is important to note that bear and coyote roam freely on the adjacent mountaintop, although are rarely seen or heard. Proper wilderness precautions must always be taken while camping. Aside from the flora and fauna, one of the biggest attractions is the star-filled sky. On a clear night, it is imperative to take a break from your private campfire to appreciate the Milky Way. You may also enjoy the meteor showers in August and other celestial events. Not to be outdone, the day sky does not disappoint. If a pop-up shower passes through, a double rainbow is often left in its wake. In the surrounding area, there are many outdoor activities to enjoy during the day. In a half hour or less, you may go horseback riding, ziplining, kayaking, tubing, fishing, hiking, and climbing. Public access to Lake Lure is less than 15 mi. away, but access to a lakeside road with amazing views is only a couple of minutes away. In addition, there is a little-known waterfall about 8 minutes up the street. If spending the day on site, be sure to walk the trail on the opposite side of the creek and hike up the hill for a different view. In addition, badminton, volleyball, ladder ball, cornhole, Yardzee, croquet, bocce, frisbees, footballs, board games and books are available for free rental. Plus, children may enjoy gem mining in the creek (for an additional fee). Of course, everyone can play Slapsquatch on the grounds for free. *Last minute decision? No worries! Check out our equipment package for two. We also sell firewood and rent tents, hammocks and other equipment separately. My wife and I moved to the area, from Boone, in the spring of 2014. Our dream was to own a house, preferably a cabin, on top of a mountain with long range views and a gradual winding road to the top. Living in Boone, this dream was definitely out of reach. When we began our search for a new home in the Asheville area, we discovered that the more affordable homes were in fact on the mountains. Perfect! In general I always have a pretty positive outlook on what’s possible, however, I was skeptical that we would ever find our dream home. As Jeannie began her Zillow browsing adventures, one particular cabin with acreage, that was outside of our budget continued to pop up. Jeannie would delete it and then it would come back. At some point the price began to drop, and drop, and drop. On our way back into town one weekend after attending a wedding, I convinced Jeannie to drive by the cabin just because we had the time. Immediately we fell in love and reached out to our realtor buddy. It was more of a shot in the dark but it couldn’t hurt, right? We held our breath for the next month totally expecting someone to get it under contract before us or the sellers not accepting our offer. It had already been reduced significantly so we knew our chances of a lowball offer were slim. We offered the most that we could get a loan for. They accepted! I still get anxious thinking back to that month, October 2014. Many years and two children later, here we are, just as excited everyday to make the long trek up our mountain as we were that August of 2014, and now we are happy to offer a similar experience to you, without having to buy the place.
