My wife and I moved to the area, from Boone, in the spring of 2014. Our dream was to own a house, preferably a cabin, on top of a mountain with long range views and a gradual winding road to the top. Living in Boone, this dream was definitely out of reach. When we began our search for a new home in the Asheville area, we discovered that the more affordable homes were in fact on the mountains. Perfect! In general I always have a pretty positive outlook on what’s possible, however, I was skeptical that we would ever find our dream home. As Jeannie began her Zillow browsing adventures, one particular cabin with acreage, that was outside of our budget continued to pop up. Jeannie would delete it and then it would come back. At some point the price began to drop, and drop, and drop. On our way back into town one weekend after attending a wedding, I convinced Jeannie to drive by the cabin just because we had the time. Immediately we fell in love and reached out to our realtor buddy. It was more of a shot in the dark but it couldn’t hurt, right? We held our breath for the next month totally expecting someone to get it under contract before us or the sellers not accepting our offer. It had already been reduced significantly so we knew our chances of a lowball offer were slim. We offered the most that we could get a loan for. They accepted! I still get anxious thinking back to that month, October 2014. Many years and two children later, here we are, just as excited everyday to make the long trek up our mountain as we were that August of 2014, and now we are happy to offer a similar experience to you, without having to buy the place. Learn more about this land:   Pitch your tent in the grass on the tip top of the mountain or park your camper in the flat gravel spot with a fire pit just below the top with beautiful views overlooking Cane Creek.  In the fall and winter enjoy 360 degree views and in the summer enjoy the shade and cool breeze while relaxing & snacking on wild wine berries and black raspberries.   What you will not find is light pollution, traffic, and a desire to leave the mountain.  Fall asleep to the calls of the hoot owl and wake up to the knocking of the wood pecker.       If & when you decide to explore the area, be sure to checkout Hickory Nut Gap farm just 7.9 miles away & Whistle Hop Brewery 7.7 miles away.  Turgua brewery just down on Cane Creek road is only 6.2 miles from camp.  Cane Creek Valley Farm as well as the Cane Creek Community swimming pool is also at the base of camp just in case the kids need a dip of ice cream or a dip in the pool.  Justus Apple Orchard is only 10 miles down the mountain towards Hendersonville.  We love taking our kids there.      We are only 15 miles from downtown Asheville & Hendersonville, and 22 miles from Lake Lure. We have had some small pop up campers or travel trailers camp with us. It is possible to turn it around at the top if you are comfortable in your maneuvering abilities. If you are unsure, please stick to a van or car.

Campfires allowed
Firepit. The top of the mountain tends to keep a little breeze, so I ask that you please be extremely cautious when having a campfire. Water to extinguish will be available at your campsite. You are welcome to forage for as much firewood as you can saw, or you may purchase firewood that is split and cured.
Toilet available
Pit toilet. In the outhouse you will find a 5 gallon bucket with wood ashes and a scoop. Please, after using the outhouse, I would kindly ask you to add 1 scoop of the wood ash to the pit. This will help keep the facility fresh and composting properly. Thanks!
Pets allowed
We have a 75’ long dog run that you can use. We do not supply a leash. If your dog is at risk of 'exploring' or chasing a scent, this mountain becomes quite large when a furry friend gets lost, so please don't take any chances. I have assisted with dog rescues in the past and if I am available I will help again as we are dog people too. Myself and family would be devastated if a situation didn't end well.

Bottled water or jugs. Water is offered as an extra. It will be supplied in a 3 gallon NSF food grade dispenser.

Grill over firepit, communal, cookware, cooking utensils, cutlery, basic seasoning and oils

It’s a sizable table, but not exactly a picnic table. Logs to sit on are available.

I loved my stay on top of Barnhill Mountain. The views were beautiful, and the campsite was peaceful, private, and secluded. The shelter was a huge bonus, especially when it rained, making the whole experience cozy and comfortable. Edwin was a fantastic host, he was friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help. The homemade kombucha was also a real highlight and a thoughtful touch that I really appreciated. If you're looking for somewhere to disconnect, enjoy the peace and quiet, and wake up to amazing mountain views, I couldn't recommend this spot highly enough.

We loved camping at Barnhill Mountain Top. A very beautiful and peaceful retreat away from the hurry-up world. The view is awesome and the camping site is very well maintained. We will add it to our favorites list. Easy access with our 144 AWD Spriinter van.

Edwin’s place was perfect for us! It was our first time taking our two dogs camping, and we really wanted something secluded to test it out. This was the spot! Super private and allowed us to let our dogs off leash. The property was spacious and shaded. Being able to add on water was great. We will definitely be back!

We had such a great overnight stay here. The view was incredible, especially at sunset, and the stars at night were amazing. It was so quiet—exactly what we were hoping for. The site felt very private, was easy to find, and the restroom was impressively clean. The small structure is pretty cool with a sleeping platform and lots of extras. It does block the sunset a bit but we still had a great view. Overall, we loved our stay and would absolutely come back.

This was such a special place. Edwin has done a very lovely job on the place. The shelter can be slept in and we used that for our kitchen type items. The sunsets are awesome. We will be back. Complete seclusion.

Barnhill mountain is an awesome place to set up camp to explore the Asheville. I've stayed here two separate times and would recommend it highly. Excellent views from the site, very private, and less than an hour drive from many, many great hikes in the area. Great spot to camp with dogs and Edwin is a fantastic host, making sure you have everything you need. I'm not sure I'll be in the area again for a while, but this one's definitely bookmarked!

We had the most wonderful weekend at Edwin’s spot. It was absolutely beautiful, incredibly private, and exactly what we were hoping for in a peaceful getaway. We tent camped in February, and even with the colder weather, we were comfortable and cozy. I didn’t expect the shelter on site, but we really appreciated using it for extra storage. The views were stunning, the sunrise was breathtaking, and the campfire kept us warm all afternoon while we cooked and relaxed. There’s something special about spending a slow day by the fire with nowhere else to be. Our dogs had the best time exploring all the open space, too. It truly felt like our own little retreat for the weekend. We were sad to leave when the trip was over, but we’ve already shared this hidden gem with friends and hope many more people get to experience it. We’ll definitely be back!

Such a lovely spot! I live in the area and needed a spot in the woods to decompress and this was just that! The spot and the view were lovely, I enjoyed having all the storage for gear and firewood, and the privy was such a nice convenience! The space is well kept and the host was easy to communicate with. I will definitely be recommending this spot to my friends and hope to stay again!

The location was perfect for what I was looking for. Very quiet and secluded. I went on Christmas Day, which was really nice because being winter I could see through all the trees and I had a 360° view of the mountains around us. Several good spots to pitch multiple tents, and just a great spot overall. Highly recommend

We had a great time and will definitely be back! The view was great and the site felt private. It was honestly hard to pick which fire pit we wanted to use. If you’re tent camping the top one is probably better. We used the bottom pit since we were truck camping. The closed in shed serves as a good shelter in case of inclement weather and the on-site outhouse was a nice added feature as well. I feel like the price is reasonable as well, not too cheap but not too expensive either. There are a good bit of downed trees around but not much can be done about that and I believe it’s helped open up the view too. Overall we were very happy and will definitely be coming back!

Truly at the top of a mountain! Edwin communicates quickly & answered all our questions. The shelter Edwin has made is awesome, wouldn’t even need a tent if you want to sleep in there. The pit toilet is a GREAT addition. The dog cable run is a really nice too. There are multiple spots to place tents and two different spots to have a fire. We had a group of 10 people with 6 tents and still had open spots. 2 trucks & a van fit at the parking on site, the mini van struggled a bit up parts of the graveled hill drive but made it! 10/10 recommend & would love to come back.

Edwin’s Hipcamp was wonderful! It has a very remote feel without being too far away from a few other houses on the mountain. The road up the mountain was very windy, but the directions provided were easy to follow and we had no issues. There is a small shack at the tent site with some solar powered lights, camping supplies, and even a wooden bed you could use to get shelter from rain or wind. The views here at night of the city and stars were incredible! Would definitely camp here again if in the Asheville area. Also for anyone with dogs, there was a long lead that will give your pup room to roam at the site! We did hear some trees fall during the night as it was very windy and many other trees were already fallen. I would definitely be cautious of where you place your tent.

I love this spot!! It’s my second time staying here and it was just as amazing as the first time. It feels remote and private, but is a quick drive into the city of Asheville!! It’s a perfect spot for campers.

What a beautiful, spacious, private site! We wish we had more time to stay and enjoy the beautiful views! The stars at night were unreal!!!! We have a 14 ft camper that fit perfectly. It was a small challenge getting it turned around, but we made it. 😎 We visited the Souther Williams Vineyard since it is close by. Absolutely gorgeous with the fall colors popping in the trees!
