The best dog-friendly glamping sites in Catskills

Just over two hours away from New York City, this mountain region is loved for its rolling green hills, pristine forests, and hidden waterfalls. The natural beauty has drawn visitors for over a century, leaving a history of grand resorts and hotels. The Catskill Mountains are the birthplace of fly fishing, as well as a popular destination for skiing, hiking, kayaking and, of course, camping.

Summer is the high season for campers when the comfortable temperatures lure folks away from the sweltering city. Autumn has fans, too. Visitors come as the trees change color, recasting the land in brilliant oranges and reds.

Kaaterskill Falls is perhaps the most famous scenic spot. This stunning waterfall cascades down over 250-feet. The falls have inspired artists for centuries, including several Hudson River School painters. The North-South Lake campground is close by. The largest of the New York State campgrounds, this spot has many family-friendly amenities, including beaches, boat rentals, and hiking trails.

Experienced hikers come to the Devil's Path to tackle one of the country's most difficult--and dangerous--hiking trails. The path takes hikers over some of the highest peaks, including Hunter Mountain. In the winter, this mountain is a major thrill for skiers and snowboarders. The Hunter Mountain Skyride has chair lifts that take you to the top most days of the year.

The Esopus Creek offers some of the best fly fishing in the country, particularly for trout. For a home base, check out the Kenneth L. Wilson campground, just a short drive from Mt. Tremper. The ground is on Wilson Lake and has a fishing pier to cast off into the shallow water.

You can also explore the Catskill Forest Preserve by water, following the many tributaries and lakes. Little Pond campground is a nice jumping off point. In addition to tent sites, there are several remote campgrounds off the beaten path for more seclusion. Just down the road are Big Lake and Alder Lake, two favorite spots for flat-water paddling. Motorboats aren't allowed, so small craft have the water all to themselves.

There is no running water but we provide one gallon of drinking water and one gallon of water for washing up in the bathroom. You can add-on our outdoors camping shower setup for an additional $30, which is more like a birdbath than a real shower, but you can add hot water so it is warm. Sit on our gorgeous rocking chairs on the deck and grill, and stargaze from bed through the dome in the ceiling. Please also note that there are extra charges for more than 2 guests ($15/ person/ night), pets ($25/ stay), propane for heat (if needed- $25/ tank) mini-propane for gas grill ($10) wood bundle for outdoor fire ($15) and outdoor shower setup ($30 for us to fill with water, provide biodegradable soap, and two towels). What else is there to say? I'm a performer by nature, considered TransJester, and therefore I'm flowery in my admiration for Des and his small piece of literal Feywild magick. Throughout the entire process, he suffered my questions in regards to my 'cule, available water supply, and the general "Privacy" of the space. Not only did he answer every question that I had, he communicated in a timely manner, and never once left me hanging when I asked a silly or complex question! Even came home with a new felt friend! Des, Sorry in advance. It's your own fault I must say, for facilitating an oasis tailor made for someone as eccentric as my group of creatures. If you're concerned about general physical (or invisible) disabilities, worry not. While the path down is gravel, Des offered a ride and assisted with the unpacking no questions asked. The Cabin, Kitchen, and Bathroom facilities are all immaculate. Mini Fridge, Ice Chest, Firepit, plenty of seating and grilling utensils, your community needs are met. Warm water shower?? Yes please! The Cabin was comfortable with bunk Full/Queen air mattress beds, functioning outlets, a TV, and AIR CONDITIONING! CPAP friendly! The privacy was spectacular. We saw maybe 5 people (and even then, across a lake's worth of distance) the whole weekend. The freedom to be as comfortable as you deem necessary was wonderful. Plenty of tent space, with a few surprise vistas that you should experience on your own. Dogs welcomed, it's our new nature haven.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely Perfect Getaway! Roscoe Campground is hands down one of the best campgrounds we’ve ever stayed at! From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel so welcome — they’re incredibly friendly and helpful. You can tell they truly care about the experience of their guests. The campground itself is spacious, peaceful, and beautifully maintained. Everything was spotless, from the campsites to the facilities. There’s plenty of room to spread out, relax, and enjoy the outdoors without feeling crowded. And the river? Absolutely amazing. Whether you’re fishing, floating, or just sitting by the water taking it all in, it’s the perfect touch of nature that makes this place extra special. We can’t wait to come back. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a clean, friendly, and scenic camping spot!
