The Upper Shire Private Campsites in the Hudson Valley are on a gorgeous hill with a small pond surrounded by 22 acres of an old horse ranch. It is located in Columbia County near the Massachusetts and New York border. There are currently 5 unique camping areas located here. Each one is special due to its location on the hill. Check out our map and enjoy our spacious yet secluded campsites and our new off-grid double shower shack with hot and cold water on demand. This place has a relaxed atmosphere and is located near Catamount Ski Resort, Bash Bish Falls, Taconic State Park, Hudson NY, and Great Barrington, MA. If you plan on bringing a pet please be sure to add that fee to your booking under "extras" ($25) If you have additional guest(s) that would like to join you that fee is ($25 a night per person) and you will need to message us about how to arrange that. We have extra easy pop-up two-person tents available to rent ($15 for two nights) you can also find that option under "extras" along with bundles of firewood ($15)

PLEASE NOTE, this site books out the entire property! You will have access to the airstream, a-frame cabin, bell tent and RV/tents sites. For weekends this is a two night minimum stay rental. We can accommodate up to 30 guests in total. For the tent/RV sites, you must bring your own camping gear. As of July 2024 we have opened our brand new (two) Shower Shack with hot and cold water. Please read each of the site descriptions to understand what is included in your stay. Pets are allowed but they must be kept on leash. Potable water available. Portable toilets available onsite. Pine Grove Bell Tent

A 13-ft diameter White Duck Bell Tent on a custom-built tent platform in a Pine Grove next to a shady pond. We've included a campfire ring with a grill, solar-powered string lights, Adirondack chairs, and campfire blankets. Our Bell tent is outfitted with a small Jackery power station, one queen-sized air mattress, and a sleeping cot with a Japanese futon. Hillsdale, NY has a brewery, cidery, the longest Zipline in North America and so much great hiking nearby. If you have friends that would like to join you with their own tents on this site that can be arranged for an extra fee. The Taconic State Park is close by for hiking and kayaking as well as Guilder Pond in Mt. Washington, MA. The towns of Great Barrington, Ma. and Hudson, NY both a short drive away. So much to explore, see, and do in this area nestled in the eastern corner of the Hudson Valley next to the Berkshires. If you plan on bringing a pet to the Bell Tent please be sure to add that fee to your booking under "extras" ($25) If you have an additional guest(s) that want to pitch a tent on the the Bell Tent campsite that fee is ($25 a night per person) and you will need to message us on how to arrange that. Off Grid A-Frame Cabin by The Pond

This newly constructed 3-season A-Frame sleeps up to 4 adults or two adults and two children. This pine and cedar cabin is furnished with a queen-sized bed, a full-sized futon couch (both to be used with your own sleeping bag and pillow) reading lights, and jute rugs. Deck furniture is a set of chairs with a small end table for morning coffee or a nightcap. Power for lights, music, a tea kettle, a PC, and a fan is made possible with the use of a Jackery power station. A fire pit and two Adirondack chairs will be set out front for use by guests at this site. An outhouse and parking is nearby for use by guests. It’s truly a hideaway nestled in a pine grove in front of a picturesque pond in the Hudson Valley very close to the Berkshires. Screened triangle windows and sliding glass doors with screens make this A-frame very well-ventilated for summer stays. Please message the host 15 minutes before you arrive at this site. The cedar live edge privacy screen completes this campsite on private land in a very bucolic setting. A brand new Propane heater/fireplace has been added to this cabin recently. 1987 Airstream at Tin Can Valley

Enjoy the unmistakable vibe of a vintage Airstream trailer in our newly-refurbished 1987 Sovereign 27, which sleeps 4 with a super comfy queen bed area beneath the panoramic windows up front and 2 mid-cabin twin-sized bunks. The trailer is sited on a very private, gently-sloped acre of cleared lawn and meadow flowers tucked between a pine grove and deeper woods, within the Upper Shire campground in eastern Columbia County of New York's Hudson Valley. As of July 2024 we have opened a brand new (two) Shower Shack with hot and cold water. The trailer has off-grid solar panels powering the cabin lights and stereo, and we have provided a Bluetti solar generator for your 120v needs. There is no wifi, but the cell coverage is excellent for both major carriers. The kitchenette has an electric kettle and a French press for your morning coffee. There is no running water currently on the property, so the trailer is dry-docked, but we can provide potable water upon request, and there is a clean porta-potty (serviced weekly) located nearby. Outside the trailer, the site is equipped with 2 Adirondack chairs around a metal fire ring a grilling grate, a small table, and 2 hammocks for total relaxation. Firewood is available for purchase; NYS regulations prohibit the importation of out-of-state wood (or wood sourced more than 50 miles from the Upper Shire campsites) that isn't heat-treated to prevent the spread of evasive pests. The Upper Shire Campsites are dog-friendly; leashed, well-behaved pups are always welcome! Our campsites have a leave-no-trace carry-in carry-out trash policy. Please take everything you bring in back out with you. If you plan on bringing a pet to the Airstream please be sure to add that fee to your booking under "extras" ($25) If you have an additional guest(s) that want to pitch a tent in front of the Airstream that fee is ($25 a night per person) and you will need to message us prior on how to arrange that. This authentic (off grid) log cabin is now available for your camping adventures! We are so excited to add this pondside cabin to our campsites. It will sleep a family of 4 or 2 to 3 adults depending on the age(s) of the members of your group. We will take bookings now starting now. This modern Black and Tan hand-peeled pine log cabin has six operating windows, front door, a queen sized bed and a full sized sleeper sofa/futon. Windows that look out to the pond, a porch to relax on in a rocker, a fire pit, and hammocks. Pine Grove Bell Tent
We loved camping at Upper Shire! The cabin was amazing. It was cozy and had all of the amenities that we needed and then some! It was well built and very cute. We definitely recommend taking the canoe out on the little pond. It was gorgeous. Joanna was extremely hospitable. We are definitely coming back.

Off Grid A-Frame Cabin by The Pond
The A-frame was impeccably clean, spacious and gave our family of 4 real protection from the wet weather we encountered when visiting. The outhouse in a v short walk away, as were the very welcome showers. There was a Jackery power source and everything was very easy. Note that you are aware of other campers from nearby sites, as the Cabin and AirStream are very close by: it didn't bother us, as the guests were very courteous and easygoing. I would only comment that the futon couch didn't work for us to sleep both of our children (5&7), as it was rather small for them.

We were lucky enough to be the first official visitors to Joanna’s new cabin! Great campgrounds, well maintained. Loved the outdoor shower and the cabin was very comfortable. Joanna is a great host and very responsive. The location is wonderful. We look forward to coming back!

This was our second time camping here, and it was again wonderful. Jo was incredibly accomodating as we navigated getting out of the city, and the a-frame is so cozy! We also loved the (brand new) outdoor showers. On the rainy day we checked out nearby restaurants and Berkshire towns - especially recommend Great Barrington. We'll definitely be back!

Joanna’s sites are beautifully and thoughtfully laid out. The airstream was comfortable and fun to sleep in. Joanna was communicative and helpful. We saw turtles in the pond, a barred owl, lotsa birds and deer walked by too.

This was my second trip to Uppershire. It’s a wonderful piece of property with amazing hosts Barb and Joanna. Each site is curated carefully and the amenities keep being added. Last year a hot outdoor shower and this year a new log cabin for a glamping experience. Although I am a squaredrop camper (think queen bed on wheels) I really appreciate the serene land coupled with the amazing hosts, and cute town ta boot.

Off Grid A-Frame Cabin by The Pond
We had a great weekend stay at the off-grid A-frame by the pond! The setting was lovely and peaceful. Our kids and dog enjoyed playing in the open space, and we enjoyed relaxing by the fire pit! We took a little canoe out on the pond and did some fishing, we went hiking, and visited the nearby cidery. Joanna was communicative, responsive, and friendly! The cabin was cozy... thankful for the propane heater as the temperature dipped below 30 degrees at night. Five stars, highly recommend. We will be back!

We loved tent camping here! Joanna’s directions made it easy to find and she was there to greet us upon arrival. The site was clean and quiet 🥰. Our two pups also had a blast 🐾 We loved that the site is dog-friendly. Joanna checked up on us throughout and gave great recommendations. Be sure to check out the farmers market. Great selection of produce, meats and other local vendors. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and we will be back!

This was a great, secluded camp site with little trails around the property. We all had a relaxing time over the weekend. The highlight of the trip was the quite nights and hot, outdoor showers! Joanna was very communicative during the process of booking and provided everything we needed. We'd definitely come back

The host was kind, the private environment was wonderful, and the surrounding nature was stunning. Everything was perfect. There were no unwelcome visitors like at night, and no mosquito bites for me and the firewood provided by the host was excellent for a campfire. I will definitely come back again.

WOW! What a beautiful campsite. Not just the tent site but all the sites were beautiful. Everything was tidy, the Portajohns were clean, and the new showers were such a joy. It was so nice I slept the night outside in one of the hammocks. 75 degree day and 50 degree night. My wife and 8 year old daughter loved it! We woke up and made a fireside breakfast and walked the manicured trails. Completely exceeded my expectations a will absolutely return. We took our travel trailer and it was not a problem to level out on the upper meadow and then drive straight out to exit.

What a special place at the Upper Shire to pitch our tent! Complete with 4 adirondack chairs, fire pit, potable water in a container with spigot, and a clean porta potty. And the new outdoor shower was perfect. The general area is lovely and scenic. We spent time at the Taconic State Park, Bash Bish Falls, and Hillsdale's large farmer's market. We loved staying in the A frame, it was breezy at night, the fire pit was great, and Joanna is a fantastic host! The cabin has a small generator so there are lights at night and you can even use a power outlet or USB to charge your phone. We explored the property and it is lovely, and the outdoor shower is a delight.

My family and I loved camping on Joanna’s land! The site was easy to find and everything we expected. The views from the site were beautiful. Joanna was a great host and had great suggestions for food and things to do. We appreciate the great communication and accommodation. We hope to come back soon! Upper Shire Meadow
This is our second stay at the Upper Shire and it was everything we remembered from last year! This site perfectly accommodated a small tow-behind camper and two tents. There was also plenty of room for our 3 dogs to explore! Joanna even gave us a tip about a creek for the dogs to swim in that was just a short drive and totally worth it on a hot day! The only downside is that the gnats swarm in the mid-morning and early evening, but that's camping! We didn't take advantage of the new shower, but we did check it out and it's gorgeous. Highly recommend this spot!
