Once the site of the historic V.J. Fetzner Brewery from the late 19th Century. The land is now used as a hobby farm, honey bee sanctuary and nursery to a unique tree species normally not found in Southeastern Minnesota.
Remnants of the brewery are still visible. Foundation walls outline the massive structure of the brewery. Nestled in the center of the foundation is the entrance to
the sixty-seven foot deep cave that
once held barrels of beer and can be accessed by canoe only.
Hops have been located on the property and are believed to be ancestors of those raised to make the beer once stored in the cave. The pond that provides access to the cave was dug out in the early 1990's to create a fish out for the Spring Falls Trout Farm that used to exist across the highway. Some of the original brood stock still exist and continue to naturally stock the pond. It is not uncommon to see fish that are five to ten pounds in size. We do not allow fishing from our pond.
The residents house is built to scale to the original brew master's house. While the house is only twenty-four years old it looks as though you have taken a step back in time. The name Shady Rest was given to the house by
the Brew Master's wife.
We thought it was appropriate to keep the name alive.
Shady Rest Acres is comprised of twenty-three acres of beautiful woodlands and pasture that are protected forever
in the
Minnesota Land Trust. The pasture is home to Scottish Highlander cows, two miniature donkeys, five sheep, four goats, honey bees and a flock of chickens. Scottish Highlanders
were selected for both their grazing and browsing abilities. They are very docile and make excellent pasture mates to the smaller species sharing the pasture. The cows are excellent forest managers. They
clear out invasive species such as Honey Suckle, Buckthorn, and Barberry which can often be difficult to manage. A guided tour with the host can be taken to meet the pasture animals.
The forest is comprised of many tree species. Some are unique in that they normally do not grow in this region of Minnesota. The yellow birch is a species normally found in Northern Minnesota. It's bark is golden in color and glistens when the sun hits it just right. We have a cluster of several yellow birch including one that is so big that the bark no longer looks golden but instead is grey and very rough. Years ago the largest of these trees made excellent wood for turning bowls. Blue Beech (musclewood) can also be found on the property. As the name indicates the bark is shaped like muscles. Songbirds and some other species will use different parts of the tree as a food source. Towering white pines also speckle the landscape. Mother pine requires at least two humans arm lengths to encircle the whole tree. She is a favorite resting spot for the barred owl. There is oak, elm, maple, ceders, poplars and numerous other species.
Honey bees are an integral part of the landscape. We partnered with a friend and
started raising honey bees two years ago in order to do our part to keep pollinators thriving.
Their hives are located in the pasture where it has the perfect amount of early morning sun to get them moving and afternoon shade to balance out the summer heat. It is not uncommon to see them pollinating garden plants, trees and wild flowers around the property. One of their favorite feeding spots is the acre and a half prairie which offers a range of plants including big blue stem, wild indigo and baby blue stem, to name a few. Not only are honey bees essential to the food chain but they also provide a very enriching experience when they are observed moving about their hives. There is nothing more relaxing and fascinating than watching these amazing creatures.

Goldie is open for the summer!
Goldie is an original early 1900's wooden caboose that ran on the DMIR railroad. She was re-designed in 1912 to be safer on the tracks (and her length extended so she wouldn't fall over). She ran the tracks of the Iron Range until retirement in 1968. She's been fully renovated with a few modern conveniences.
We've re-used as much of the original wood as possible, and repurposed many things into other things so that we could keep the history alive. My husband is the carpenter that brought her to life and I'm the one that gave her some paint and design.
Now, she's ready for people again, and to keep telling her story to others. Please...be our guest...and let Goldie be your host. The caboose sits about 50 yards from the house, but it tucked into the trees and feels very private. There is a private trail that leads from the caboose to the lake.
Goldie has a max occupancy of 2 people due to space constraints. Please no pets since there are wooden floors. If you have a service dog, of course it is welcome - please reach out to me about that detail.
She also offers:

We do have pets and they do run around the yard freely. There are two dogs that love to romp and say hi (a female Golden Retriever and a female Griffon mix) and a female cat that does the same. They are super friendly, but they will come to visit you at the lake.
Our lake is an "environmental lake" so while we keep a small beach area that you are welcome to use, it is not free of lily pads or weeds. It's simple, but fully swimm-able (the Golden Retriever keeps the first 8 feet of water weed free with her swimming!). You are welcome to use the dock and chairs we keep there for breezy evenings or to take a dip to cool off.
We are only 2i-sh miles from town with gas, food, ice cream, coffee shop, resaturants, small town shopping and a donut shop. There is a paved rail trail just down our street that runs both directions for many miles. Bikes are welcome! (please leave ATVs at home).

We live on a 10 acre property with many mature trees and a walking path cut through the middle. We do not have any farm animals but there are some in area so the normal farm smells blow through on occasion. We have a 7 hole disc golf course on the property. We have six 30 amp/110 electric hook ups and 2 water hook ups. There is plenty of room to play yard games. The historic Dodd Ford bridge just 3 miles away. The small town of Amboy is just 4 miles away. There is a Casey's gas station and Dollar General in town and a couple different other dining options. The stars are amazing at night out here.

You can even take a 30-mile drive to Itasca State Park, home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River, where you can walk right across the headwaters!

Our stay at Paul's Lakeside Cottage exceeded every expectation! Paul is an incredible host and made us feel right at home. One of the highlights was a sunset cruise on the lake that we'll never forget.
The cottage was the perfect home base for exploring Itasca State Park and Bemidji, while still offering a peaceful place to relax. We saw so much wildlife—including a bear sitting on the beaver dam across the lake!
Our dog, Piper, absolutely loved her stay and had so much fun playing with Paul's sweet dog, Piper. She definitely wasn't ready to leave!
If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway with an amazing host, this is it. We couldn't have asked for a better experience and can't wait to come back!

We really enjoyed this campsite! It’s not super private, but it’s quiet and we really felt like we got our privacy, despite having a cabin right next-door and the beach on the other side. The resort staff are super nice, and the lake is wonderful. The resort itself is immaculate and so incredibly well-maintained.You get both a beautiful sunset and sunrise – we will 100% come back.

The local of a "site area 51" was perfect close to bathrooms and all of the extra things that were provided like the game room and shop fishing the sport stuff the beach... it was really wonderful... and there was such a vibe the moment u get there.. a family vibe... everyone was so kind... it was so great I reserved a few more days in a month ❤️ I love that there was something for everyone all ages was a wonderful place... a great break from life... it was just what I needed

Great place! Great fit for us with kids, they loved the lake, bunk beds, and we went to the beach at Little Emily Lake Park about 15 minutes away. Loved the fire pit, and we hung a couple hammocks. Would love to come back again.

2nd visit, happy to go back a 3rd time! Nice space between sites and easy on/off to major and minor roads. Suggest taking back roads of you can.

Our kids (7,6,3) loved staying at “the Farm” as they would call it! They loved wondering “where the cat was”, playing with legos, exploring outside and eating s’mores by the campfire, swinging on the swings, and meeting the farm animals- and feeding a baby lamb. They were on cloud 9! Such a lovely place to stay. The barn layout was so well planned out. Hannah is so knowledgeable and gave a very educational tour of her farm. It is so beautiful and peaceful there. I love that there are only a few camping spots and they are spaced out so there is still lots of privacy. My little girl could run around, make some noise, and we could have music without it bothering anyone. It is an area where you can feel secure that your kids are safe. The nature surrounding you is beautiful and the owner, Jolene, is so nice!! We have camped there twice now, and we will definitely be back again. Looking forward to it!!

The site is nice and tucked away, but not too far of a walk to the car. The tent is very nice. We had a great stay! If you’re looking to enjoy Jay Cooke but can’t get a reservation at the park this is a nice, quiet option.
