3. No Firepit. Vehicles and tents allowed. $30
4. Sites with Firepits allow vehicles and tents. $50 includes a firepit filled with firewood, 1 vehicle, 2 tents, 4 people. Additional firewood can be purchased for $5 a bundle.
If yard maintenance, such as mowing or trimming is necessary during your stay, it will typically take place between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Many folks that have visited our place refer to it as 'country living in the city'.
We are so blessed to live in this little piece of serenity just inside the city limits of Duluth.
Our home was once an abandoned house that sat for years until a friend mentioned to us that it might be going up for sale. We loved the location and rolled up our sleeves. Twenty years later we still marvel at the beauty around us and can hardly believe that we LIVE here!
Just down the road is a trout stream and beyond that was a popular farm that attracted many folks to this neighborhood for hay rides and sleigh rides. The farm has since retired its horses and closed its doors to make room for new homes, but memories live on in the beauty of the open fields. I often imagine the sound of horses and sleigh bells and people singing carols and then warming up around a toasty fire sipping hot cocoa. Some of those memories live on right here at Balsam Ridge (minus the horses). Over the years many groups of folks have enjoyed a sense of community in these back woods no matter the season. Campfires, kids catching frogs, neighborhood campouts, snow picnics, hair-raising toboggan runs, family campouts, spiritual silent retreats, a take-your-breath-away giant swing, and some tales too daring to mention are all part of the fun.
This is why we do what we do. We've been given much, and love to give back. It just wouldn't seem right to keep all this good to ourselves.

Welcome ; Located in southeast Minnesota's Driftless region of hills, valleys, fields and forests, we are a grass based working dairy farm with over 100 acres of woodland,
including an extensive trail system and campsites in our wooded acres. What makes this woodland special is it's quiet, secluded setting and over 6 miles of hiking / skiing trails.
Our farmstead sits three quarter of a mile off the paved county highway on our well maintained gravel driveway.
Each of our campsites are secluded from the others with their own sawdust compost toilets, picnic tables, fireplaces, and firewood.
Two of our sites require 4WD with a minimum of 6 inches ground clearance
to access, and two are accessible with 2WD.
If you do not have 4WD we can help transport your gear while you enjoy the walk in.
There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. At night it is common for owls to visit the campsite area to say hello, and coyotes talking in the distance. The winding trails through 100 acres of woodland offer a variety of woodland habitats, from Old growth Maple to mixed hardwood, to dense brush, to the edges of open pastureland. Bring your fat bike or mountain bike for an enjoyable ride.
For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing
or snowshoeing / hiking
on the property. However the Rock Bottom Cabin is our only heated and insulated site and is available for winter booking. Winter access is walk in only with snow on the ground or in the forecast. We can help transport gear.
This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm and guided tours of the dairy and cattle are available when scheduling allows.
Children 12 and younger are free at our campsites.
No need to be counted as guests , but please let us know when requesting to book.
We do not allow non-booked visitors to our campsites due to the secluded, remote location, and accessibility.

We have a lovely piece of property to come enjoy a getaway at. We enjoy all of the peace and quiet around here. The night sky is unbeatable in my eyes. We have a small hobby farm with lots of very tame animals. We have 42 acres to roams with lots of trails within the woods that are filled with aged oak trees and many young maple trees. Our property is filled with lots of wild flowers and wildlife.
We are locate 3 miles from the root river if you enjoy fishing or going for a float down the river. There are two caves in our area that are a must see while you are visiting. I you like to hike there is a state park 14 minutes from us that have many miles of hiking trails and horse trails.
If you are more the small town strolling type of person we have lots of small towns around us that are filled with shops and lots of great food! There is a large system of bike trails in our area that make a very fun way to check out some of the small towns.
If you have a family with kids we have a lot of fun activities you can do with your kids, like spending time with the goats and chickens, playing on our playground, or taking a nice walk through the woods looking for fossils!

Great quiet relaxing location, with wildlife and the sound of the country. You will have the only camp site on the property. You can stay in the small camping cabin in comfort with your own bedding, or bring a sleeping bag. We have the twin bed in the loft, or use the futon on the main level. The cabin only has room for two adults unless you bring a camp pad to sleep on the floor, or squeeze in a child, but you have the comforts of an A/C , a Weber grill, mini fridge, microwave, and Electricity. Quiet former country farm site, with great wildlife viewing options with walking trails. Only 23 miles to DT St. Cloud and 7 Miles to the Walmart in Princeton for food or supplies. If a shower is desired the Kwik Trip in St Cloud, on Hwy 10 has showers. Just a half mile off Hwy 95 and 5 miles from the large Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, with trails and lots of wildlife. In the Fall expect to see a large amount of wildlife with many migrating birds come out of the refuge to feed. Expect to hear Pheasant's cackle in the AM, and see Sandhill Cranes and Geese fly over the camp site, or sitting in area fields. Enjoy time around a campfire with folding chairs and a picknick table, with plenty of free dry firewood in a storage rack.

Such a beautiful hideout in the woods. Paul was a wonderful host from his house nearby. Beyond that, we were surrounded by beautiful woods, the lake, and the quiet. Within an hour of Bemidji and even closer to Itasca State Park. Would recommend to anyone!

Our family loved our stay in the Gokotta tent! We just wanted a few days away unplug and to end the summer and was exactly what we needed! We wanted to camp but didn’t want all the work with setting up a tent etc so this was perfect. So many cozy touches at our site and around the whole area. It’s not as remote as the pictures show - just a large beautiful property that has some trails, so grocery store etc conveniently close by if needed. We went up to Two Harbors for a day which was about an hour drive. Our boys seemed to just want to go back to the “glamp” site though. Lol. Our boys are 10, 14 and 16 and all loved it. We enjoyed playing the homemade carpet ball game on site as a family (got pretty competitive), the swings, and just sitting by the campfire. We played cards one night in a cute building down by the little pond. Everything there had so much character and thought put into it. Even the outhouses were cute and had working light switches.
Linda and Chris were the sweetest people and genuinely wanted us to have the best stay. Will definitely go back! We loved Gokotta because was more private at the far end of the property and worked great for our family!

My husband and I love coming here with our dogs!! The Rock Bottom Cabin is quiet and secluded which is so relaxing. We are able to have our dogs off leash to play and run around at the site without worrying too much about other campers wandering in. The site itself is beautiful and very well upkept and organized. The trails are well maintained and take you up and down for quite the hike. Would definitly recommend!!

We had a family of 7, kids age range 2-14. Stayed in beautiful off grid cabin, kids loved taking turns in the loft. Very private and far removed from the family house. Beautiful trails and view of corn fields. Clean, nice outhouse setup. We didn't have mosquitoes, which i was surprised by.
They allow you to go in the animal pen as you please and we all enjoyed the goats and chicks following behind their mamas...and we wanted to take the sweet calf home with us.
This is a fantastic hip camp experience. We stayed just two nights but there are plenty of things to do in the area to extend the stay.

Weekend Trip to The little cabin
The Little Cabin was a sweet and private tiny space in a private area with lots of wooded paths around to explore. My senior dog, Sven, was as happy as can be wandering the paths and sleeping cozily on the floor of the cabin. This is a very tiny space; in my case, just right for the two of us. It was incredibly quiet over the weekend; I saw only one car on the gravel road out front, and the air was filled with wonderful bird, cricket, and frog sounds. The property was very private and I actually heard nor saw any humans at all, which I very much appreciated. I will be very excited to return again soon!

Just a heads-up for future campers: be ready for a solid hike up the hill to get to the site! It is just as described, just over a quarter mile to gain 230' in elevation 💪

I enjoyed my stay in the mini coop. It was perfect for me, and I received the reset I needed. I highly recommend Linda's property! I have 2 more sites to visit and I can't wait.

3 nights at Balsam Ridge Retreat
Unless you have stayed at Balsam Ridge before, you simply don't truly know what to expect when you arrive. Pictures, descriptions & reviews from others simply don't do justice for what you truly experience. Balsam Ridge is a place you have to spend time at yourself to fully take in and understand why this place is so highly reccommended, loved and appreciated by so many people. Once you enter the site, you completely forget you are actually still withing the limits of the city because it feels like true country! The peace, tranquility, & comfort it brings it like no other place I've ever been. Chris and Linda go above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable during your stay and take care of you as if you are "home". They sincerely care about their guest and value them and their feedback and always make themselves available at all times. If you are ever in neen of a place to stay while in Duluth - I promise you - Balsam Ridge would not disapoint you!

4 nights at Paul’s Lakeside Cottage
We adored our stay! Our highlights were cooking over the fire, wildlife watching (we saw a few loons, some frogs, a painted turtle, lots of fish, some deer and a beaver!). We loved the canoe — the lake is beautiful and serene. We even did a little fishing and caught 3 bluegill and cooked them up for dinner. Our senior pup, Hank, was also absolutely in heaven. We found the stay private, deeply connected to nature, comfortable, and romantic. If you’re looking for a place to unplug & recharge — this is a beautiful spot to do so!

2 nights at Balsam Ridge Retreat
I simply adore Balsam Ridge! This was my third visit (first in Danny’s tent) and we had a wonderful time tucked back in the trees. Chris & Linda are wonderful hosts- they truly go above and beyond with their caretaking of the property and are very responsive when questions arise. This is my favorite retreat from the cities and I can’t recommend it enough to all my friends and family.

My fiancé and I had so much fun on Dan’s property. Our puppy probably loved it more than we did. The beach was only 4 minute drive it was amazing, not too busy and just gorgeous views. We will definitely be staying again!
