Our cabin is located on a 40 acre parcel just off a private very well maintained road. Privacy is well maintained for a quiet getaway. Full of wildlife in the undeveloped area, we’ve spotted various types of animals and birds ranging from small to large! The 14x28 cabin offers a kitchenette for food preparation needs, with a faucet for cleaning, and a neat dining table to eat with space. Food and drinks can be kept cold in the solar powered fridge/freezer. Sleeping offers a queen size log bed for a needed nightly recharge. Enjoy outdoor dining or watch as a campfire crackles. Rock fire pit provided along with birch firewood for campfires or sauna house. Clean and spacious outhouse is provided for bathroom needs.
House Rules:
-This will be based as a “glamping” type experience. “Leave it as you found it” and let others enjoy the space. Cleaning supplies are provided for an easy refresh! (Broom, swiffer mop, wet wipes, sprays, soap.) This helps keep stays more affordable if we all can do our part.
- Water is all carry in!
- Cellular reception is limited in this area, although satellite WIFI can be used.
- Kitchen includes paper towels, cutting boards, hot pads, spatulas, and common utensils.
- Heater is ready to warm the space at the turn of a thermostat!
- Pack in your own bedding to enjoy your favorite comforters and pillows.
- Easy access is provided with an mechanical door lock key holder.
- We provide dry birch firewood for easy and clean outdoor burning, toiletries, and all cleaning supplies needed plus garbage bags for a clean and fun experience.

Welcome ; Located in southeast Minnesota's Driftless region of hills, valleys, fields and forests, we are a grass based working dairy farm with over 100 acres of woodland,
including an extensive trail system and campsites in our wooded acres. What makes this woodland special is it's quiet, secluded setting and over 6 miles of hiking / skiing trails.
Our farmstead sits three quarter of a mile off the paved county highway on our well maintained gravel driveway.
Each of our campsites are secluded from the others with their own sawdust compost toilets, picnic tables, fireplaces, and firewood.
Two of our sites require 4WD with a minimum of 6 inches ground clearance
to access, and two are accessible with 2WD.
If you do not have 4WD we can help transport your gear while you enjoy the walk in.
There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. At night it is common for owls to visit the campsite area to say hello, and coyotes talking in the distance. The winding trails through 100 acres of woodland offer a variety of woodland habitats, from Old growth Maple to mixed hardwood, to dense brush, to the edges of open pastureland. Bring your fat bike or mountain bike for an enjoyable ride.
For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing
or snowshoeing / hiking
on the property. However the Rock Bottom Cabin is our only heated and insulated site and is available for winter booking. Winter access is walk in only with snow on the ground or in the forecast. We can help transport gear.
This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm and guided tours of the dairy and cattle are available when scheduling allows.
Children 12 and younger are free at our campsites.
No need to be counted as guests , but please let us know when requesting to book.
We do not allow non-booked visitors to our campsites due to the secluded, remote location, and accessibility.

cherries) using sustainable and organic practices because health and wellness matter to them! They are still in the process of improving their property. Many of the building on the property were in poor condition, including the old barn foundation which is now one of Dan and Danielle favorite places to keep cool in the summer. After they had excavated all the debris (which took years) they were able to transform it with gardens and fire pit for all to enjoy. They love sharing what they have been blessed with! Many folks that have visited our place refer to it as 'country living in the city'.
We are so blessed to live in this little piece of serenity just inside the city limits of Duluth.
Our home was once an abandoned house that sat for years until a friend mentioned to us that it might be going up for sale. We loved the location and rolled up our sleeves. Twenty years later we still marvel at the beauty around us and can hardly believe that we LIVE here!
Just down the road is a trout stream and beyond that was a popular farm that attracted many folks to this neighborhood for hay rides and sleigh rides. The farm has since retired its horses and closed its doors to make room for new homes, but memories live on in the beauty of the open fields. I often imagine the sound of horses and sleigh bells and people singing carols and then warming up around a toasty fire sipping hot cocoa. Some of those memories live on right here at Balsam Ridge (minus the horses). Over the years many groups of folks have enjoyed a sense of community in these back woods no matter the season. Campfires, kids catching frogs, neighborhood campouts, snow picnics, hair-raising toboggan runs, family campouts, spiritual silent retreats, a take-your-breath-away giant swing, and some tales too daring to mention are all part of the fun.
This is why we do what we do. We've been given much, and love to give back. It just wouldn't seem right to keep all this good to ourselves.

We have a lovely piece of property to come enjoy a getaway at. We enjoy all of the peace and quiet around here. The night sky is unbeatable in my eyes. We have a small hobby farm with lots of very tame animals. We have 42 acres to roams with lots of trails within the woods that are filled with aged oak trees and many young maple trees. Our property is filled with lots of wild flowers and wildlife.
We are locate 3 miles from the root river if you enjoy fishing or going for a float down the river. There are two caves in our area that are a must see while you are visiting. I you like to hike there is a state park 14 minutes from us that have many miles of hiking trails and horse trails.
If you are more the small town strolling type of person we have lots of small towns around us that are filled with shops and lots of great food! There is a large system of bike trails in our area that make a very fun way to check out some of the small towns.
If you have a family with kids we have a lot of fun activities you can do with your kids, like spending time with the goats and chickens, playing on our playground, or taking a nice walk through the woods looking for fossils!

Weekend Trip to Balsam Ridge Retreat
Glamping at the Stuga @Balsam Ridge was wonderful! The property was well maintained with lots of amazing special touches - the string lights, all the beautiful community spaces, and our little cabin the Stuga. Our favorite was the two swings the Dreamer and the Screamer! To top it off the hosts are great people - my daughter and I really enjoyed meeting them and hearing a little history about Balsam Ridge. Thank you for sharing your space it made for a wonderful weekend away!

Amanda’s cabin was EXACTLY what we needed! My cat Bones and I stayed here for one night. The beds were clean and comfortable, the wood burning stove is beautiful and effective. The outhouse was clean and not too far away.
For only being there for one night, we experienced and enjoyed maximum levels of nature! A beautiful owl silently landed in the long grass of the field at dusk (maybe hunting?), I walked around the pretty pond, listening to the symphony of frogs. Just around midnight, a pack of coyotes investigated our camp! They were howling and making amazing “laughing” sounds. Absolutely beautiful. Preparing breakfast the next morning, I glanced out the window and spotted a massive moose trudging around in the pond! He was moving through the reeds, sipping the water and munching on the green vegetation. So cool!
This cabin was affordable, easy to get to, suitable for all vehicles (I was in a heavily weighed down Prius, so minimal clearance), parking very close to cabin, private, packed with wildlife, and most of all, has a wonderful, friendly, and responsive host!
I’ll definitely be coming back when in the area. Thank you, Amanda!

Our family had a wonderful stay in Gokatta! We originally booked it as just a place to sleep while exploring around Duluth, but we loved the property so much that we spent most of our day there. All of the sites are very unique, and there are so many fun things to find throughout the whole property. Our tent was such a cozy place to stay, it was clean, and had all of the amenities that we needed. Chris and Linda were the most kind and hospitable hosts that we have ever had! 2 weeks later and the giant swing is still a daily talking point for my kids. We will definitely be staying again, and are already planning our next visit to explore one of the other sites that they have. Would highly recommend anyone to stay here!

I felt like I was at a private nature retreat. Watching and listening to the lake activity was magical. Loons, trumpet swans, beavers…..and the birds! Have your Merlin App ready to go and don’t forget your binoculars. The property is amazing, the host is amazing. Truly a special getaway, and a quick drive to Nevis, Itasca State Park and Park Rapids for local adventures. I can’t wait to go back.

We brought our two kids (21 months and 2 months) and had a blast with the goats! They were right next to the camp. We had snores for the first time here. The cabin was perfect, and Cathy ran up a couple of battery powered portable fans for the heat of the day. Easily our favorite Hipcamp we’ve ever been to! Location was great too at 10-15 min away from Lanesboro for lunch.

Patty and Michelle’s place was great! The studio was extremely comfortable and had everything we needed. We loved the relaxing atmosphere, peace and quiet all the natural light and the record player. Plus the adorable dogs and cats who always wanted to say hi. Dont be surprised if you are waken up by an early rooster or donkey. It is a farm after all

The A frame was so fun to be in! I loved the concept of opening up the side and having the dogs relax and be able to go in and out when they wanted! The river right next to the site was peaceful, so many birds for bird watching and not too many mosquitoes when we went (although ticks loved our dogs). The owners let us try some of their wine and got to meet the other campers which was super fun and had a lot of laughs! Go meet Carl and his family, they are so wonderful. It’s right next to Rum River State Forest and not too far from Lake Mille Lacs. Great stay! Would come back :)

The green cabin was the perfect retreat for our family (2 kids + 2 dogs). The creek crossing plus the hike up the hill was a little bit of work to get all the gear across, but well worth it for the spacious and private site. Water was a little high early in the season so water shoes or wet boots were a must. All round very memorable trip.

Jon's property is the definition of a secluded retreat - absolutely stunning. It is very easy to get to, perfect lodging accommodations and plenty of space for our 2 dogs to roam. Do be mindful of the season you are staying - wish we would have brought tick repellent dog spray. Can't wait to return outside of tick season.

Mike and Joan were phenomenal hosts. Joan greeted us, provided a detailed map of the property and trails, and personally led us to our site. Mike later stopped by to introduce himself, which was thoughtful and made us feel welcome.
The amenities struck a great balance between immersion and convenience. We appreciated the gray water sink, cooking grate over the fire area, covered firewood, on site garbage/recycling, and outhouse. Note that there isn't a traditional fire pit, only the setup shown in the photos.
The outhouse is about 10 steps from the boat, surprisingly spacious, and uses a composting system with sawdust provided after each use. There was also a child potty seat available which is one less thing for a family of littles to pack!
The site requires a short walk down a mowed hill. Access is through the hosts' property, so there isn't a separate private entrance. You can come and go, but it's easiest to arrive with everything you'll need.
Our 8-year-old and two dogs loved the space. The site felt private, we enjoyed the nature playground and driving the boat, and the cliff-top location was beautiful. It was breezy during our stay and we encountered very few mosquitoes.
One drawback was that the boat felt damp and musty. We found a few dead bugs and some mouse droppings, which didn't bother us much, but the musty smell transferred to our clothing and bedding and required thorough washing once we returned home.

Weekend Trip to Aefintyr
The site was excellent, with lots of handy amenities. It was cool to have a little grill available and some communal areas, while also having a secluded camp site. The process of booking was easy, and Chelsi was proactive and responsive with communication.
