Big Moose Inn Cabins & CampgroundIrving O. Hunt and his brother Lyman built some rough camps on Millinocket Lake before they became interested in the Nesowadnehunk Stream region. Whether or not their old camps were at the same site as the present camps on Millinocket Lake we do not know.The Millinocket Lake Camps, known today as Big Moose Inn, are located on a narrow spit of land separating Ambejejus Lake and Millinocket Lake. Before a dam controlled Ambajejus’ water level, it was possible to pole up the short stream from Millinocket Lake into Ambejejus.Fred Spencer build the camps, originally named Camp Eureka, in 1899 or 1900 and ran them with his brother. With the founding of Millinocket only a few years earlier and lumbering roads nearing Katahdin, the two lakes became more easily accessible. Camp Eureka was advertised as the only camp reachable by both boat (from Norcross) and road (from Millinocket). In 1905, the rate was $1.50 per day, meals included. Spencer also claimed the lakes had no flies or mosquitoes during spring and summer- a phenomenon caused by the way winds blow across the lakes, which makes it difficult for insects to gain a foothold.The camps’ name changed to Camp Spencer and later to Spencer’s Camps. Around 1929 the lease was transferred to Elmer Woodworth, who lived with his wife on a nearby island while they operated the camps. Elmer, a well-known guide, trapped over the winter, and his wife served as the camp cook. The couple soon renamed the camps Millinocket Lake Camps and Trading Post. They also maintained an outlying camp on Sandy Stream for their guests. In 1941, a major fire broke out in the area. The Woodworths saved the camps by wetting them down, but lost their island home when a stray spark jumped the cove. There is some evidence that, for a short time, a gentleman named Johnny Given either held the lease or managed the camps for the Woodworths. Except for that brief change the Woodworths operated the camps for many years until they passed the lease on to their son Ray, who ran them with his wife Muriel.In 1977, the lease was transferred to Bob and Frederica (“Teddy”) Boynton, who in 1981 sold the trading post to Erwin and Maureen Bacon. The Boyntons retained the sporting camp operation and later added a public restaurant. Teddy renamed the camps Big Moose Inn. Bob and his son Bruce made many renovations to the camps, while Teddy decorated and furnished them. The Boynton Family has remained involved in the success of the inn and restaurant. After Teddy’s death in 1991, management passed to Bruce and his sister Laurie, but Bob and other family members are still very involved.The dam separates the flowages of the two lakes. Millinocket Lake is about eight feet above its original level, and Ambajejus is now some 21 feet above its original level. Gardiner Farms RV site is located on the Grindstone Rd/Rt 11 in Stacyville, Maine. The campsite is situated on a 200 acre lot with lots of room to hike about or walk your pets. The adjacent field is a working potato farm while the north end of the lot is older fields and woodlands. The Grindstone Rd is an approved ATV access route. We have places for 2 campers on this site. The main site includes 20/30/50 amp electric, water, sewer, and trash removal-no extra charges for anything. There is also a campfire pit on the premises. This year, we are making available for rent a Buddy site in case you are traveling with a friend with their own RV. This will be right in the driveway at the main site. This site will offer 15 amp electric and water if you have a wye valve. No worries, if you rent the main site, you will be the only one that can rent the Buddy site. Sorry, no WIFI, but you should be able to get a cell phone signal at the campsite. Millinocket is about 30 miles away and Houlton is about 45 miles. Katahdin Woods & Waters Monument https://www.nps.gov/kaww/index.htm is about 20 minutes away depending upon which parcel you want to access. The Penobscot Trail system (bicycles) https://penobscotrivertrails.org/ is 10 minutes away. In Patten, you will find the Lumberman's Museum https://lumbermensmuseum.org/ and several restaurants and takeouts. Excellent canoeing/kayaking, hunting and fishing on the East Branch of the Penobscot River. Old Home Days in Sherman is Labor Day Weekend. This campsite is open from May 15th to October 15th.

Schoodic Lake is a spring fed crystal clear lake that locals claim as the second cleanest lake in Maine with views of Mount Katahdin. Tradewinds grocery store, in Milo just under 7 miles from camp site. Wildwoods restaurant 3 miles from camp site. Schoodic Lake is a great spot for kayaking, water sports or just enjoying the great outdoors. Wood for “very small” campfires provided at tent/RV site, but no other amenities. Loved the friendly staff and the cabin atmosphere all around. Site AB backed up to the main road but wasn’t busy on our 1 night overnight. Bathrooms and showers were clean and right there. The lakes on both sides were very pretty and great if you wanted to canoe or kayak. It was the perfect place to stay before going out on the Golden Road or to Baxter State Park. Absolutely loved the checkin area with fireplace and restaurant behind it.

My wife and I stayed here while our daughter started her southbound AT thru hike. The place was perfect! Mike was amazingly accommodating! We enjoyed our evenings sitting outside and watching the sunset. It was peaceful and quiet. We absolutely loved it and will be back to stay whenever we make it back to the area.

Hands down the BEST hipcamp in Maine. It's truly private. The host lives down the street. The towns around is charming! You're right on the same road as the katahdin monument which when we went there was no one.else besides us! We also took the multi hour trip to the Ghost trains have been abandoned for almost 100 years and should be on uour bucket list for Maine. While there is a grocery store and a couple places to dine out..most fast food and chain restaurants are at least 40 minutes away so it's best to prepare food at home. There are great Amish stores nearby too! The host sells fire wood and maple syrup. You have a beautiful pull through level lot, a fire ring and full hook ups and they will even take care of your trash. I would have stayed longer if we didn't have plans elsewhere. We stayed for 2 weeks and I highly recommend staying more than just a couple days. You cant beat the price either. If we come back to Maine this will be out #1 pick.

I had a big site. The water and electric was over by the bathrooms and if I had my RV it would have been a pain to get to but since i was in my camper van it was no problem. We had a nice stay. First impression was great, the yurt was clean and fresh. The beds were quite comfy. Pretty much everything you need is provided. Monica was hilarious and helpful. We ate a lot of good food from local eateries and saw some great sights. The outdoor shower was great. We sat on the dock in the evenings and watched the frogs and loons. We definitely recommend this site!

This campground was perfectly situated in the heart of God's country. It sits between Lake Ambejejus and Millinockett Lake. We found Ambejejus to be outstanding for swimming. The sites were very spacious and flat. AB was right next to the bathrooms/showers, which was also nice. There are also 3 restaurants within walking distance that offer a nice variety of cuisines, ranging from bar food/sandwiches to upscale entrees. We really had a great time at Big Moose!

Sherri was an excellent host. Very friendly and responds to communications promptly. Perfect location for a fishing kayak given proximity to water and private dock. I did not have cell service from the location but Sherri provides access to her high speed internet so no concern with staying connected.

They were very nice and let us switch to a spot right on the lake. Quiet place and a good base for us. We saw a show at the Boreal Theater in town and went on a great hike to the ice cave. The showers were HOT and good pressure.

Mikes land was awesome! Nice big yard, fire pit, reasonably priced firewood, plenty of space. Although somewhat close to the road, it was quiet. The little garage on the property had some roof for storage that we were able to use for our motorcycles! It was awesome! We weren’t expecting that perk. Easy to pull in and out (essentially a pull through site). Lots of walking to do around the potato fields. Will absolutely be back!

My daughter & I camped here for 4th of July weekend. The site is very private with minimal neighbors. Really quiet aside from some evening fireworks from several sites on the lake, to be expected on the 4th. We enjoyed it. Sherri is an excellent host making us feel welcome. Always willing to help with any question or request. Overall, a great vacation. Thank you Sherri!

We had an amazing stay here. The farm is beautiful, the owners were incredibly welcoming and gave us amazing tips about the area. It's a very easy site to set up in, we pulled right up with no hassle. Our rig is 38ft and it fit great. We would love to stay here again!

My husband and I stayed at Circle right. We went in early May just as they were opening . It was a very lovely site surrounded by large boulders and a view of the lake through the trees. The restrooms were very clean and the hot showers only cost 75 cents for a long shower . There is a great store/ restaurant adjacent to the property. There are great biking trails just up the road , a beautiful lake to paddle and Baxter State Park just 10 miles away. We would definitely go back..!
