Tucked among spruce, fir, and birch on Sunshine Island in Deer Isle–Stonington, Four Acre Woods began more than 60 years ago as a small, family-run campground known as Sunshine Campground. Travelers from across the world visited this quiet island forest, drawn to its raw beauty and the peaceful energy that generations before us had loved and cared for. The campground eventually closed in the 1990s and sat untouched for over 15 years—its trails, clearings, and old campsites slowly reclaimed by the woods. The land waited, quietly, for someone to bring it back to life. In the years that followed, Caleb, a longtime local operator on the island, took interest in the property. Recognizing both its history and its potential to offer people a deeper experience of Deer Isle’s natural beauty, he began the process of carefully restoring and reopening the land. Working season by season, Caleb rebuilt the sites, added new infrastructure, re-established utilities, and designed a campground that honors the land’s roots while offering a comfortable, modern, and nature-forward experience for today’s guests. In July 2020, the property reopened under a new name: Four Acre Woods. Today, it blends the spirit of the original Sunshine Campground with thoughtful stewardship, simple comforts, and a deep respect for the forest that surrounds it. Visitors once again gather under the birches and spruces—sharing campfires, slow mornings, quiet nights, and the timeless island calm that makes this land so special. So— Welcome Home. Sincerely, The Caretakers of Four Acre Woods

Arbor Camp Acadia Cabins/Treehouses

19. Arbor Camp Acadia Cabins/Treehouses

25mi from Bangor · 3 sites
Arbor Camp is a collection of thoughtfully designed cabins and treehouses set on 30 private acres in the Maine woods offering a secluded forest retreat on the Union River—private and peaceful, yet just minutes from the shops, restaurants, and year-round charm of downtown Ellsworth. Located 30 minutes north of Acadia National Park, it’s an ideal base for exploring the mountains, woods, lakes, and rugged shoreline that define Downeast Maine. With nearly half a mile of river frontage, a stream, and over a mile of hand-cut walking trails, Arbor Camp’s thirty acres provide ample space to unwind without leaving the grounds. Two cabins and a treehouse sit in an open field with wide views of the river and its passing wildlife. The remaining treehouses are thoughtfully spaced across 25 acres of quiet forest, offering privacy and a sense of deep immersion in the trees. Many enjoy filtered river views through the canopy. Each season brings its own pleasures: temperate summer days and cool, starlit evenings; fall foliage and crisp air; the stillness of snow-covered woods in winter; and, in spring, a quiet reawakening as color and life return to the forest. Arbor Camp began in 2022, when three friends came together to build a quiet place in the woods. Thirty acres along the Union River in Ellsworth offered the space—and the inspiration—for something lasting. The project was shaped by Maine’s camp tradition: simple, seasonal dwellings that invite stillness, comfort, and connection to the land. We followed the path of an old roadbed to guide our layout, preserving as many trees as possible. Cabins and treehouses are spaced for privacy and quiet, and walking trails were cut by hand to follow the natural shape of the land. Wildlife is part of daily life here. Songbirds call from the canopy. Heron and eagles pass overhead. Deer move through the understory, and turkeys wander the clearings. Mushrooms—chanterelles, black trumpets, and others—rise through the forest floor in season. From the start, the idea was simple: to create a place that feels good to step into. Each of us brought different experiences—design, building, creative work—but shared a clear vision: spaces that are well made, deeply comfortable, and in tune with their surroundings.

Water Access: There is no pond or stream access on the property; however, many ponds and streams are nearby and can be reached by vehicle via logging roads. ATVs are not allowed on logging roads.

Adults-only camping (18 or older) — no dogs allowed on the property. Cabin: One cabin is available with electricity but no water. It features two twin beds, a refrigerator, microwave, outdoor grill, and cook plate. Due to the remote location, electricity may be interrupted occasionally. Primitive Camp/RV Sites: Two primitive camp/RV sites are available with no water, electricity, or dump station. Each site has a picnic table and a screen tent, which is necessary due to black flies, mosquitoes, and horse flies common in the area. Viking-style Longhouse: The longhouse is available for gatherings, events, and similar uses. It does not have electricity or water. Water Access: There is no pond or stream access on the property; however, many ponds and streams are nearby and can be reached by vehicle via logging roads. ATVs are not allowed on logging roads. We are approximately 40 miles from Ellsworth or Brewer and about 70 miles from Calais. About the Campground: This is a no-frills campground offering a peaceful and quiet setting to enjoy the remote Maine woods or to use as a base for exploring this beautiful part of the state. The longhouse has been used for family gatherings, board game weekends, and meetings. We do not allow children or dogs at the campground, as we aim to provide a quiet retreat for guests seeking to relax and enjoy the Maine woods. This is a new campground, and we continue to improve the property each year with landscaping and walking trails. Note: May can be a challenging month for camping due to black flies, so please keep that in mind when making reservations.
