5 nights at Handyland

Beautiful and open space foe camping. The views, weather and property where better than expected. My boys loved the creek! We typically like to not stay in the same place twice but this might be an exception. Keep in mind this is tick country so come prepared and check often.

We had a lovely night all to ourselves on this spacious farm on our drive from Virginia to Colorado . Our dogs loved it! Plenty of games and fun things for kids, including disc golf. We had a couple of questions and the host was very responsive..

Weekend Trip to Camping Along the Old Bison Trail

I had an amazing stay at Steepleview Farms! The tent site was spacious with plenty of room to spread out and set up camp comfortably. Marcus was an excellent host—super communicative and responsive to both texts and calls, which made everything smooth from start to finish. The site itself is peaceful and private, surrounded by trees with plenty of trails to explore nearby. The fire pit was a great touch, and having a porta-potty on-site was really convenient. Firewood was also available for purchase, which made campfires easy and enjoyable. Honestly, there was nothing I didn’t like about this place. If you’re looking for a quiet, well-maintained campsite with a reliable host and great amenities, I highly recommend Steepleview Farms!

1 night at Camping Along the Old Bison Trail

This was our first time using Hipcamp, and we had a great experience. The host was great to communicate where our site was located. It was a peaceful, quiet night. I’ll be using the platform again, and I would consider staying here again if in the area.

Weekend Trip to Camp Kokovoko

We stayed at the Dixon Hilltop Campsite. It is beautiful and secluded. If you like primitive camping - this is the place for you. Sunrises over the hill with a cup of cowboy coffee are amazing. Our kids were able to roam around, but we still felt very safe and comfortable with them out of our site. Kokovoko Farm is a lovely "little" working farm. If you take the time to talk to the host Leslie you will get lots of lovely little insights to the farm and a great history of the Gotland ponies she raises. Fair warning this is primitive camping and about as close to backpacking with out moving everyday that you can get. So if you expect easy camping with electricity, toilets and lots of water - this is not for you. If that sound great to you then this is the perfect little slice of camping heaven!

Beautiful property with several spots. We chose to tent camp with electricity in order to work during Friday day and was placed near the stage. We had a wide open space with nice views of the farm. We enjoyed walking the trails. Next time, we will try primitive camping at one of the more private and shady sites. There were a few other campers there which was nice to chat. We were offered the use of the bathroom at the house which worked well for us. Overall, a great stay.

Nice storage container house. Had everything you would need. Shower was fantastic. We hiked to the creek and explored. We fished in the small pond for some small fish. The games around the storage containers were fun for kids. Great place to visit.

My family loved camping in this laid-back quiet farm. The host Keven was excellent. Great communicator and wonderful company. He showed us around, helped us pick a spot, and even offered to help set up. He had work to do in another location on the farm (flood damage) but checked in us ever so often to make sure we were good. The kids loved the animals that run freely through this beautiful fielded property off the river. We petted horses, min horses, donkeys, and goats. There were chickens and ducks too closer to the outhouse. This farm is located down a road across from the wild turkey distillery. It’s protected by an electric fence that Keven ensures you are familiar with during the first meeting. This was weeks ago and my kids still talk about this camping trip. Thanks, Keven!

Our lodging features treehouses, yurts, a bunkhouse, retro camper, water/electric hook-ups, and campsites. We also host weddings, retreats, and other events so advance reservations are required. For insurance purposes and the safety of our own livestock and pets, we do not allow guests to bring their pets/ESAs onto the property. Prepare to UNPLUG as we do not have cell service or wifi (there IS a landline for guests to make phone calls located in the Community Farmhouse). All guests from tent to treehouse have access to our solar-powered Community Farmhouse featuring a fully-stocked chef-inspired kitchen, restrooms, coin-op laundry, and upstairs multi-purpose room with a library and board games. There is also an outdoor kitchen area with additional cooking space including a grill, microwave, and sink (sink is closed in the winter so the pipes don’t freeze). Our seasonal bath house is generally open from April or May to October or November based on the prevailing temps. There are 4 flush toilets, 2 sinks, and 2 hot showers. The floors are concrete so we recommend shower shoes and you'll want to bring your own towels and shampoo/soap. The farm has a small playground, yard games, creeks, and a steep and rugged hiking trail that loops the mountain. We're also just 8 miles from the hiking trails at the Berea College Pinnacles, 8 miles to Owsley Fork Reservoir, 20 minutes to Anglin Falls, 12 miles to Berea, 35 minutes to Richmond, Ky, and a scenic hour to Red River Gorge. THE BAPTISMAL POND: As history goes the pond in front of this site was used in the 1800's for baptisms for the church visible from everywhere on the farm, thus our name. This is a tent site, easy to drive into and out of, fires permitted in season. THISTLEDOWN GATHERING PLACE: This is a very large meadow, surrounded by trees with the capacity for large groups, many tents and gatherings of lots of people. Very level, easy in and out with vehicles. Fires permitted in season. WHITETAIL SANCTUARY: Every night for decades a herd of whitetail deer graze in this pastoral setting. Drive in and out, fires in season. Suitable for a family sized tent. THE PENNINSULA: This camping spot is WALK IN ONLY. You can drive to the trailhead on grass and walk the path to the campsite (about 200 yards). One of two remote sites. It sits in the woods, on the bank of a wet weather creek which flows around two sides of the campsite. Fires permitted in season. TOTEM TREES: This site is WALK IN ONLY. A short hike down the hill from the grass parking area and you have a small spot for a tent, in the woods, surrounded by trees and a lot of standing dead ash which appear as if you are in the presence of totem poles. NO OPEN FIRES. MUST USE BACKPACKER STOVE AND FLAMELESS LIGHTING. SPOTTED FAWN HIDEAWAY: This totally secluded walk in campsite is suitable for a small tent only AND PERFECT FOR HAMMOCK CAMPING. Primitive Camping Retreat

Mawhe Acres Camping Retreat has two primitive camp sites just inside the tree line of an open field, each with a 16' x 16' crushed limestone pad for tents. Each campsite has a picnic table, fire ring and access to a compost toilet (in outhouse). There is no potable water or electric. However, for a nominal fee, we can provide a water hose to the campsite. There's easy access with the ability to drive through the field to the campsite or guests can walk in with their gear from driveway. We're fine with car camping too - we just want to keep things as natural as possible. Mawhe Acres - a 25 acre farm, much of which is raw land and woods in their natural state, undeveloped and not farmed for decades - is an official National Wildlife Federation® (NWF) Certified Wildlife Habitat™ site. NWF recognizes our commitment to sustainably providing the essentials of wildlife habitat - natural sources of food, water, cover and places to raise young. The abundant wildlife around includes deer, squirrels, red foxes, turkeys, chipmunks, groundhogs, raccoons, opossums, woodpeckers, owls, and birds of prey (mostly red-tailed hawks and vultures). We have a small lake with good fishing and acres of woods to explore. There are some footpaths for easier walking.
