We bought the farmette with much work outside and home interior remodel to complete. We slowly turned the property into our family oasis. We neighbor a pasture with cows. There are free range chickens running around during the day. Geese greet us every evening and morning at the pond...as do the many bullfrogs. Occasionally you'll hear the coyotes, but they keep their distance. The stars shine peacefully and the sunsets are picturesque (most afternoons). The pond is a great place to swim and fish. The hillside is a nice walk for exercise or take the easier route and sit under the great oak tree in the other pasture. Campsites are off the road, behind our main home. You won't find a sign...we keep it simple. We allow pets at the sites for a $5 per pet/per night. Rich history in this property. A section of land was purchased from the railroad in 1866. The farm was established in 1872. The rest of the property was purchased land from neighboring farms as the family grew. Our family has seen six generations born and raised on this land in the past 150 years. American Indian tribes use the land for their burial ground ceremonies. Elders from a Wisconsin tribe came to the farm through the 1960s to trek the land and perform a ceremony to honor their ancestors. Many arrow heads were found in the fields of the land. The American Indians told stories of how the little spring fed creek running through our land was a small river flowing towards the Apple River which flows into the Mississippi River. The Apple river is located one mile north of the farm. In 2001, the land hosted a small budget film crew for the scenes and setting of the 2002 film “Stray dogs” with Genevieve Turner. Welcome to The Prairie Lodge — A Rustic Retreat on Historic Land Nestled in the heart of the Driftless Region of Northeast Iowa, The Prairie Lodge sits on 200 acres of native prairie and timber as part of the Cook Heritage Farm Estate. This cherished family property has been passed down through generations for over 173 years. The property borders the scenic Turkey River and is surrounded by rolling farmland and gentle bluffs that lead toward the mighty Mississippi River. Rich in natural beauty, the Driftless Area is geologically unique—never touched by glaciers—and is known for its caves, underground streams, blind valleys, sinkholes, and cold spring-fed creeks. The Prairie Lodge, once the main “corn crib” used for drying and storing harvested corn, has been thoughtfully renovated into a comfortable and charming retreat. Inside, you’ll find a full kitchen, two bathrooms, a cozy living room, and an open loft with four queen beds. The loft comfortably sleeps eight and can accommodate up to ten guests with a blow-up mattress if needed. Step onto the east-facing patio deck with your morning beverage and watch the sunrise over fields of blooming prairie flowers. Wildlife is abundant—deer, rabbits, songbirds, pheasants, and even eagles are frequent visitors. As night falls, the second-floor deck becomes the perfect spot for stargazing and listening to the calls of coyotes echoing across the land. Next door to the Lodge, you’ll find the Bin Bar—a once-abandoned grain bin transformed in 2017 into a unique gathering space ideal for late-night storytelling and nightcaps under the stars. For those traveling with a larger group, RV campsites with full water, sewer, and electrical hookups are available near the Lodge. If additional accommodations are needed beyond the Prairie Lodge, please contact your Hipcamp host for details and availability. Activities nearby: Iowa towns including Decorah, Clermont, Elgin, Elkader, and Prairie Du Chen, Wisconsin are within driving distance. Each town boasts its own fun for day and evening entertainment including local artisan wares, antiquing, hiking, biking, golfing, water recreation, breweries, and dining spots.

Absolutely gorgeous and lovely lovely people. If you like art, this is definitely the place to be not just at the campsite but also throughout the town. The nearby state park is gorgeous and has caves, the site is lovely and level and wood abounds for fires. The hosts are very welcoming and accommodating.

Such a lovely space in a gorgeous place with great hosts! Betty and Ed were super welcoming, friendly, and accommodating to our needs as guests. Their land is stunning and it was so nice to step right outside the cabin to go on nature walks. The nearby towns are fun to explore too. The photos of their cabin don’t do it justice, it’s very cute and thoughtfully designed! Would happily stay here again.

Weekend Trip to BoscoBelle

Great location, super friendly host, and firewood included in the price. We had a great time. It's close enough to town to be convenient, but rural enough to enjoy nature. The surrounding hills and trees are beautiful. The only challenge was finding a flat spot for tents. A couple areas aren't too bad, but most of the clearing is on a bit of a slope.

This was a trip for my spouse and I to celebrate our anniversary, and it was the absolute best experience to have one-on-one time away from kiddos and to be in nature. Betty was a wonderful communicator, very thorough in her instructions and directions, and gave us the lay of the land upon arrival. We were kicking ourselves that we didn’t reserve more than two nights. From hiking to fishing to cooking outside, firepit, cards and movies inside, it was a lovely experience. The cabin itself was perfect. Brand new and very functional. We truly had everything we needed and more. Do yourself a favor and check this place out!

This place is everything. My friend and I booked with Jessica last minute for a night after getting rained out of our original site, and our only problem is we wish we could have stayed longer. Cozy campsite, Jessica is an INCREDIBLE, generous host (with great soaps), and what an amazing, magical piece of land to be on. Also- world’s cleanest porta potty. Had to say it. If you’re thinking about it and you’re not sure - book it. 🤍

What a super cool place! Robert and Xene are incredible hosts, with the most epic camping world ever. The art exhibits are beyond wild, and fun to explore and get lost in. The camping was serene, including visits from deer and turkeys. The free firewood was such a nice touch, as was the ability to buy fresh eggs from their chickens. We had such a great overall experience and can’t wait to visit again!

Weekend Trip to BoscoBelle

The view at Boscobelle is great and David was very welcoming. It is set in a valley so the sun gets to you in the late morning. I have seen other reviews saying it is not level. It does have an incline but there multiple places where it is very easy to set up a tent and be perfectly comfortable. It is close enough to town that anything you may have forgotten or want access to is a five minute drive away. It was a great way to usher in fall.

Our trip to Roy's acres was the precursor to an amazing camping anniversary road trip and Roy's acres didn't disappoint. It was the perfect way to comfortably get our first camp night bug out of our system. It was clean, had electricity in the site we chose and strung lights that made for amazing ambiance. While there was no shower (which they are currently remedying) the restrooms were extremely clean and had flush toilets. The camp his host Steve was not only friendly and inviting but supplied us with free wood. I would definitely recommend it for a quick stay or long one if your wanting a comfortable clean hip camp.

We absolutely loved our time at Robert and Xene’s. The property was beautiful and peaceful. We chose the very last spot at the bottom of the property and it was perfect. One morning about 15 wild turkeys flew over us. They are caring and gracious hosts and we cannot wait to go back.

Weekend Trip to Roy's Acres

Steve and Ellen were absolutely amazing during the entirety of our stay. Their help and welcoming personality gave us the best weekend getaway. Steve was generous and allowed us to use his paddle boat on the beautiful pond and wood for the campfire. Keep a good eye out at night for a clear sky of stars. Had a great time on this acre, fishing, camping, cooking, and all. Highly recommend!

What a delight to spend the weekend at Bob and Xene’s. We experienced wild turkeys, nightly campfires, a walk to the river, and plenty of wonderful creations. Our site felt private, yet close to site amenities. You can hear some distant highway noise from the secluded hilltop… but I think that may be Iowa. We visited 4 state parks over the weekend and could often hear some road noise but still a great weekend in nature.

The tiny house was so cozy, with everything we needed. We loved being able to dabble in the creek, and watch the sunset over the meadow. It was a great spot to stay while we visited the many awesome local parks.
