My favorite trail at Governor Dodge is the Lost Canyon Trail that starts with the decent to the gorgeous Stephen's Falls. My favorite time of year to go is around Mid-May when the leaves are G R E E N and the bugs are minimal.

Weekend Trip to Honey Bee & Bee Homestead

We chose this spot for the maiden voyage with our brand new Winnebago. The spot is beautiful and super private. The hosts were more than accommodating, even giving us some peripherals we had forgotten. It’s perfect if you have dogs because the entire campsite is fenced in. Walking trails are cleanly cut and a trip into Elizabeth for a burger and a beer (try Hwy 20 Brewery cut into an old church) is super easy. The pond is lovely and frequented by migratory birds. We also fished and caught the first good sized large mouth of the year. We only wish we could have stayed longer and will be back for sure.

Weekend Trip to Wooded Retreat Tiny House

We had such a nice stay at Mary and Rick’s, we enjoyed some time relaxing by the fire and having our morning coffee. Their land is a hidden gem! Tiny home was stocked with the essentials and very cozy.

This is a beautiful property tucked into a small valley. Nice woods and a pond and lots of birds singing. It was a bit tricky to find level ground for our teardrop trailer, but had a really nice stay!

Staying on Jessica’s land was one of the single best getaways either I or my partner have had in recent memory! We initially took a trip away from home to alleviate burn out early in the working year and returned home even more refreshed than anticipated. The Bunkie was perfectly cozy for me, my partner, and our pup. The view was rejuvenating, and we had access to whatever we needed to keep comfortable. We did a lot of reading and board games when inside, and did our cooking on one of the many fire pits outdoors. Jessica has a wealth of knowledge and earnest love for the land she stewards, and we had a great time learning about the local flora and fauna. She kindly walked us through foraging, apothecary processes, artisanal soap-making, and her husband taught us how to keep our knives razor sharp. Beyond the knowledge we were gifted, we made sure to also leave with a lot of amazing smelling soap and bath salts. Outside of the space, there’s a lot of beautiful and reasonably accessible hiking in the vicinity. If you’re not one for cooking each night, there’s also a number of good spots in town to get some coffee/tea, food, and beer. We’re excited to tell everyone back home about the beautiful time we had, and we’re hoping to come back soon to see how the space is during other seasons. Thank you so much, Jessica!

This is such a nice little spot to park an RV in the area. The landlord, Amy was incredibly helpful and kind. Me and my pup had a wonderful time in the bunkie! Jessica is a fantastic host and truly went above and beyond to make sure that me and my dog were comfortable. She had great recommendations for stuff to do around the area and taught me how to make soap! Her soaps are truly next level and it was so cool to see all of her wonderful art! We also had some of her amazing tea!! It was delicious! She also has a pet skunk that was too adorable! Thanks for hosting us Jessica!

n*Everland Barnyard was the coolest experience I’ve had in a long time! Bob, Xene and Lynsey were all very welcoming and accommodating. They were so fun to hangout with and the conversations were great. The amount of art on the property is amazing and eye opening when you consider what it all represents. It was such a peaceful place too. They even made me breakfast in the morning and took me on a mountain bike adventure through town to Horse Thieeves Cave! I had a blast and recommended this beautiful place to anyone. I will certainly be back myself! Thanks again Bob, Xene and Lynsey! Andy

Weekend Trip to 1860's Botanical Paradise

Staying at Jessica’s Bunkie was a wonderful experience. The design of the room was so cute and cohesive. Truly felt like a little cabin even though it was functionally a sunroom off the side of the house. The bed was great and views even more beautiful. What was even better though was getting to explore the property. There’s some trails out back that allowed us to climb up the mountain and the hobbit house was so cute. It felt like we could be at home there. When swinging on the swing Jessica invited us inside to meet her pet skunk! She showed us the room where she creates and stores her art (soaps and terrarium like frames). We got to see the birds out her window, so many! And talking with her sun was quite fun, learning about bees. She was so hospital and really made the experience magical. The only thing that could have been better was that the room was quite cold despite the little heater and we didn’t have water till we asked in the morning. But I think some of that had to do with how we didn’t let her know our ETA and arrived quite late! The bathroom was also a decent walk from the room. Maybe 100ft? But felt long cause of the cold. That’s typical hip camp though, right? Overall, would 100% recommend and go back as well!

This was a lovely stop-over on our way to family Christmas - even with snow and slush on the ground, she met us in the dark after we arrived with smiles and warm greetings!! Free firewood for our campfire (which is right outside the window of Bunkie) was a bonus. Even though it was a chilly night and we didn't stay outside too long, we could easily see it from the window when we were inside. A wall of windows was perfect to make the smaller space seem even larger. And if it had been summer, I'm sure the flowers and wildlife would have been a lovely sight!! Even in winter, we could see Christmas lights outside the town. Jessica had tea waiting for me (I ordered it), allowed our pets to stay with us (wonderful to be able to sleep in comfort with our dogs), had a coffeemaker, supplies to shower (if it had been warm enough to do so), extra blankets and a space heater to warm our little private space. Yes - you must go up and down stone steps to access the parking area and the bathroom, but all you need is shoes and it's totally possible. While this would not be a location for accessibility (for those that need that), if you are able, it's a great little experience. The town is absolutely gorgeous on the Mississippi River with little shops, and a few restaurants. I'd highly recommend if you want a creative little place to stay, don't mind a gorgeous view, want free firewood with your campfire ring and want to meet a real life pet skunk - yes - that's right :)

Weekend Trip to Driftless Retreat 🍃 🎶 📚

My partner and I absolutely fell in love with this charming little cabin, and the ravine adjacent to the property provided a lush natural view as well as a fun place to explore. We love hunting for cool rocks and fungi, and the ravine delivered. The cabin itself was clean, cozy, stylish, and provided enough amenities to make our stay comfortable and entertaining: the space heaters provided plenty of warmth (to our relief, as our visit fell in late November), the bed was comfortable, and the selection of books was well-curated with titles ranging from classic literature to Lonely Planet travel guides. The refrigerator and hot plate made it easy to keep our weekend getaway budget-friendly without sacrificing all of the modern conveniences, too. The wifi also worked great, and the projector screen was an unexpectedly delightful bonus (as was the little aurora-style light projector for relaxing bedtime ambience). Although there are neighbors across the road, the property itself offers sufficient privacy and immersion in nature, which are always high priorities to me regarding weekend getaway destinations ... I live in the city where you can almost touch the house next door through the window. To top it all off, Marla is a terrific host: her response time to any questions we had was always faster than I expected, and her friendly demeanor made us feel more like welcomed guests than anonymous renters. We will definitely be returning to Driftless Retreat. Thanks, Marla!

We loved camping at the Woodsy tent site! It’s was cozy. Sarah was very welcoming and a great host! Always quick to respond to anything we needed. Downtown Bellevue was cute and had a great book shop. 30 mins to Downtown Dubuque and 50 mins to Galena. The drive was very scenic!

We bought the farmette with much work outside and home interior remodel to complete. We slowly turned the property into our family oasis. We neighbor a pasture with cows. There are free range chickens running around during the day. Geese greet us every evening and morning at the pond...as do the many bullfrogs. Occasionally you'll hear the coyotes, but they keep their distance. The stars shine peacefully and the sunsets are picturesque (most afternoons). The pond is a great place to swim and fish. The hillside is a nice walk for exercise or take the easier route and sit under the great oak tree in the other pasture. Campsites are off the road, behind our main home. You won't find a sign...we keep it simple. We allow pets at the sites for a $5 per pet/per night. If you would like to bring a pet, please add the Pet Fee which is listed on the Extra during the booking process. We have firewood available for sale, $5.55/bundle. This is located in the Extra section during the booking process. Lastly, there is free range chicken eggs available for purchase, $3.50/dozen. Rich history in this property. The land was purchased from the railroad in 1865 through 1869. Also purchased land from neighboring farms. It was establishes as a farm under the Roberts name in 1872. Our family has seen six generations born and raised on this land in the past 150 years. American Indian tribes use the land for their burial ground ceremonies. Elders from a Wisconsin tribe came to the farm through the 1960s to trek the land and perform a ceremony to honor their ancestors. Many arrow heads were found in the fields of the land. The American Indians told stories of how the little spring fed creek running through our land was a small river flowing towards the Apple River which flows into the Mississippi River. The Apple river runs northwest of the farm. In 2001, the land hosted a small budget film crew for the scenes and setting of the 2002 film “Stray dogs” with Genevieve Turner. Should you choose to book, or are a returning guest, I am sure that you will have a great stay. All the best, April and Everett 4 acres nestled bordered on all sides by thousands of acres of public lands. Hike the hills and bluffs for scenic views of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway. Descend to enjoy the sandy Wisconsin River. Walk over to Knapp Creek and fish for Catfish, etc. One mile to the Wisconsin River for Catfish, Northern, Rock Bass, Flat Heads, Sturgeon, etc. We are in SW Wisconsin’s Driftless Region. Apple orchards, Vineyards, Cheese factories, National Brewery Museum, Mississippi River, all within 10-40 minutes. 4 great parks within 30 miles. Wildlife abound including deer, turkey, fox, coyote, beaver, muskrat, river otter, raccoons, squirrels, eagles, swans, yep fish of all varieties, etc. Fill your canteen from our natural spring to enjoy along the way. Pause to reflect beside the babbling brook. We do have chickens and 3 Guinea Fowl. They are fenced on the opposite side of the creek. Please be aware: the rooster crows around 0500. They are 300’ away on the opposite side of the main house. Audible but hopefully not annoying. That said we are happy to have fresh eggs available for your enjoyment. Add them in the “extras” at checkout or mention when you arrive. We have one nice medium dog who won’t likely visit.

Our expansive 360-acre farm, in the family for nearly 80 years, has undergone significant transformation. What was once a grove of trees and a borrow pit for highway construction has evolved into a welcoming campground.
