Welcome to The Prairie Lodge — A Rustic Retreat on Historic Land Nestled in the heart of the Driftless Region of Northeast Iowa, The Prairie Lodge sits on 200 acres of native prairie and timber as part of the Cook Heritage Farm Estate. This cherished family property has been passed down through generations for over 173 years. The property borders the scenic Turkey River and is surrounded by rolling farmland and gentle bluffs that lead toward the mighty Mississippi River. Rich in natural beauty, the Driftless Area is geologically unique—never touched by glaciers—and is known for its caves, underground streams, blind valleys, sinkholes, and cold spring-fed creeks. The Prairie Lodge, once the main “corn crib” used for drying and storing harvested corn, has been thoughtfully renovated into a comfortable and charming retreat. Inside, you’ll find a full kitchen, two bathrooms, a cozy living room, and an open loft with four queen beds. The loft comfortably sleeps eight and can accommodate up to ten guests with a blow-up mattress if needed. Step onto the east-facing patio deck with your morning beverage and watch the sunrise over fields of blooming prairie flowers. Wildlife is abundant—deer, rabbits, songbirds, pheasants, and even eagles are frequent visitors. As night falls, the second-floor deck becomes the perfect spot for stargazing and listening to the calls of coyotes echoing across the land. Next door to the Lodge, you’ll find the Bin Bar—a once-abandoned grain bin transformed in 2017 into a unique gathering space ideal for late-night storytelling and nightcaps under the stars. For those traveling with a larger group, RV campsites with full water, sewer, and electrical hookups are available near the Lodge. Unplug and see the stars - Treat yourself to a low-tech escape into nature where you can relish the peace of a hardwood forest, soak in outstanding views, engage with fun farm animals, and just relax. This private cabin is located on the edge of our pasture-based farm - we have 160 acres of forest, pastures, bluffs, and cliffs to explore. Just off the farm, this area is home to world-class trout fishing, the Root River State Trail, Amish shops, and so many hidden gems! The space The cabin is separate from the house and the rest of the farm buildings so it is very private. On the outside, there is a picnic table, covered deck, outdoor seating, a fire pit, charcoal grill and outdoor shower. The inside of the cabin has a loft (Accessed via ladder) with two full-sized beds, a TV with a DVD player, a Culligan water dispenser, microwave, dorm-sized refrigerator, coffee maker, and comfortable seating. IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE: The loft, where the two beds are, is accessed VIA A ladder. It can be difficult to access if mobility is a concern, so please keep this in mind. The bathroom consists of a porta-potty and a private outdoor shower located behind the cabin. There is no running water directly to the cabin, but hot, running water is located in the outdoor shower. Drinking water is provided via a Culligan water dispenser in the cabin.

Weekend Trip to Pine River Campsites

Couldn’t be better than this little cabin. Always clean and has anything you could ask for. On top of that, a beautiful view including a dabbling brook right behind the fire pit. I would recommend this cabin to anyone.

We had an incredible time staying in the red barn! Loved interacting with the turkeys and cows and being so close to them was a real treat. The barn is also on a little hill, which gives you an incredible view of the surrounding area. The barn was very clean and had everything we needed. Truly our favorite stay to date.

Absolutely fantastic! One of the best camps we've been to. Dog heaven. Off leash with no worries. There are only two campsites and they are a couple hundred yards apart. This place is a gem. Hosts were super nice. Can't wait to go back!!!

Mike and Joan thought of everything. It was a perfect short stay for us. We appreciated the kindness shown to us and the ride to and from the site. We had our own little spot in nature with everything we needed. Campfires were so easy with the setup provided. Loved the presence of drinking water and wash up water. The compost toilet bathroom was clean and perfect. I’d come back in a heartbeat. Remember to bring warm sleeping bags or blankets if you are headed there in the fall!

Christine and her place were wonderful! So friendly and accommodating and the barn is absolutely adorable! So many sweet details and incredibly clean and comfortable! Shared the back bedroom with my kiddo with no problems and a grandparent stayed in the smaller bedroom and we were all very comfortable! The animals were wonderful and the location and property are absolutely beautiful! The cleanest and nicest port-a-potty I have ever seen! Highly recommend and we just tried some of Christine's Christmas pickles and they are delicious!

Weekend Trip to Gilles Family Dairy & Woodland

We loved our weekend deep in the woods staying in the Wooden Tent. Mike was great to work with and guided us right to the site and gave us a map of the trails to hike on. This is such a cool site and Mike and Joan's willingness to share their land with others. We had a few rain showers while trying to set up and the wooden tent was bone dry inside! The site has firewood, your own saw dust out house, garbage/ recycling, wash water, drinking water, chairs around the fire/ cooking area, they have literally thought of everything. Make sure if you visit you bring plenty of lights its dark dark that deep in the woods. It also seems 4-5 degrees cooler being that deep in the woods. We also didn't have any mosquitoes when we visitied mid September. At night you could hear owls and coyotes off in the distance. We did not see a single other person while camping and the few other sites are far away from each other so the nature sounds can be heard all day and night! We will 100% stay here again in the future. I will never camp at a regular camp site with neighbors again after this experience! Thanks again Mike and Joan for sharing your land and a great/ cool experience.

Such a cool and unique spot!! How often do you have the chance to stay in an old boat rescued from the bottom of The Mississippi. Mike was very nice and showed us around the property. It had everything we needed, firewood, water, chairs. And the outhouse was the cleanest one I’ve ever been in. Definitely would recommend!

This was our third time back to the Gilles Family Dairy & Woodland, and our second stay at Rock Bottom Cabin. We brought friends with us this time, as we knew they'd love it. The site is down into a valley, surrounded by hillsides full of trees. It is very spacious and private. The grill set up for cooking over the fire was great, especially for a group. There is wood on site for the fire. Picnic table is extra large. There is a large awning on the front of the cabin, which came in handy when we had rain one evening, and still wanted to be outside. Mike and Joan are gracious hosts who clearly care for their property. This can be seen through communication, how well thought out the sites are, and how the trails on the property are cared for. I have no doubt we will visit again in the future.

Miek and Joan were extremely accommodating with our stay. First, there was rain in the forecast so they upgraded us to the Hilltop Queen, which was lovely! I was very impressed with the setup (of all the sites, we took a walk around) and the outhouse is the BEST I've seen on hipcamp (and there have been other great ones!). Fire pits, water, and refuse setup made all aspects of enjoying the site easy. There was no "oh this is hard bc we are camping", just pure enjoyment. The trails were lovely and the map was much appreciated. We wish we could have gotten to explore more, but our dog got sick and we headed home early. Mike was really understanding and refunded us our unused night, which we were surprised by, because it was certainly not expected/necessary by our point of view. Again, wish we could have fulfilled our stay and enjoyed another day, but hopefully we will be able to stop by again.
