History of JW Durango Riverside Resort
It all started in 1965…
When this campground hosted its first guests the goal back then was simply to offer folks from around the Four Corners a place to relax and lounge along the Animas River.
Today, the property boasts 73 quality RV sites, 24 cabins and 6 tent sites. We also have a heated pool, playground, convenience store, retail shop, game room, café with a large deck for dining, laundry room, paved roadways, two bath houses, and an observation deck overlooking the Animas.
The property sits just south of Bakers Bridge, a local landmark made famous as the set of the climactic finale in the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” – where Paul Newman and Robert Redford sat along the rocky cliffs that line the river before they famously took the plunge.
As the lifeblood of this community, the Animas River winds its way under that bridge and south toward historic downtown Durango. Everyone from whitewater enthusiasts and acclaimed fly fisherman to laidback locals in inner tubes enjoy the same flowing mountain waters miners have tapped for more than a century.
Back in 1965, the population of Durango was just over 10,000 and La Plata County almost 20,000. Today, the city itself is home to 20,000 residents while the county is closing in on a staggering 58,000.
As more and more people discover the beauty and majesty of the San Juan National Forest and surrounding Rocky Mountain peaks, the number of people flocking to the Four Corners region continues to grow.

As it is winter, we are only allowing self contained 4x4 camper vans and other 4x4, …4 seasoned vehicles. Generators are welcome. A beautiful 40 acre ranch on Hastings Mesa with views of Alder Canyon and Hayden’s Peak. You can hear Alder Creek flowing through the canyon from the comfort of your campsite. Many nearby options for bicycling, hiking, kayaking and skiing… even backcountry, in the area. Once you pull out the driveway you are a few minutes from Last Dollar Ranch Road (hike, bike, or 4x4) and about a 25 minute (weather depending) drive to Telluride, 35 minutes to Ridgway, and 35 minutes to Norwood. Just outside of Ridgway is Orvis Hot Springs, and more hot springs can be found in Ouray. The property offers access to Alder Creek and our beaver ponds down in the canyon. The fields are blanketed with Iris and clematis flowers in May and June and other wild flowers throughout the summer including pentstemon, larkspur, and wild roses. There are patches of scrub oak and fields with cinquefoil bushes in the camping areas, and as you go down in the canyon there’s aspen groves, blue spruce, and ponderosa pines.

Our property is on 3 wooded acres of tall Ponderosa Pines, we offer a full hookup camp spot, with private driveway off the main road.
We are a small homestead and raise free range chickens and have a large garden and greenhouse.
You will enjoy your own fire pit, and private fenced acre or so of space.
We are a short drive into the San Juan Mountains, 20 mins from Mesa Verde bring your JEEP or ATV and explore the many historical mines. If you would like a guided tour, just ask us! We are almost always up for a ride! (Added bonus, Doug is geologist and can give you the ROCK history.)
Mountain bikers, this is your dream! We are a short drive to Phil's world and Boggy draw riding areas. Your bikes will be safe locked or unlocked to the RV.
We have excellent Verizon phone service and do provide onsite Starlink WIFI.
Summit lake is 1/4 mile away, a short and easy walk. Great fishing and a nice beach.
We have many surrounding trails for some great hikes!
Ideal home base for visits to Mesa Verde National Park, Phil's World and Boggy Draw (mountain biking), Hovenweep National Monument, Canyon of the Ancients and so much more!

Welcome to the forest!
Our property is on 3 wooded acres of tall Ponderosa Pines, we offer a full hookup camp spot, with private driveway off the main road.
We are a small homestead and raise free range chickens and have a large garden and greenhouse.
You will enjoy your own fire pit, and private fenced acre or so of space.
We are a short drive into the San Juan Mountains, 20 mins from Mesa Verde bring your JEEP or ATV and explore the many historical mines. If you would like a guided tour, just ask us! We are almost always up for a ride! (Added bonus, Doug is geologist and can give you the ROCK history.)
Mountain bikers, this is your dream! We are a short drive to Phil's world and Boggy draw riding areas. Your bikes will be safe locked or unlocked to the RV.
We have excellent Verizon phone service and do provide onsite Starlink WIFI.
Summit lake is 1/4 mile away, a short and easy walk. Great fishing and a nice beach.
We have many surrounding trails for some great hikes!
Ideal home base for visits to Mesa Verde National Park, Phil's World and Boggy Draw (mountain biking), Hovenweep National Monument, Canyon of the Ancients and so much more!
We are 40 mins to Durango, 90 mins to Telluride (take the FREE gondola for a super fun beautiful ride), 20 mins to Cortez. Delicious food can be found in our local restaurants in Mancos and Dolores.
In the winter Purgatory Ski Resort is just over an hour. Come play in the Rocky Mountains!

Nestled on seven acres of former ranch land, and enjoy a relatively level RV site (pull in or back in) with views of Mesa Verde, the La Plata Mountains, and the shade of mature juniper trees. Feel far from everything while only a few miles from town. Enjoy the starry skies, the company of wandering mule deer, and the sound of coyotes conversing with one another. At 7,000' above sea level, in the high desert of SW Colorado, we get over 250 sunny days a year, big beautiful snows in winter (and sometimes as late as June), and monsoon rains in late summer. Spring can be cool and windy, but you'll experience the reawakening of the plants, the lowing of mother cows and their calves on nearby ranches, and maybe even a blooming prickly pear or two!
In the heart of the Mancos River Valley, you'll find yourself at the perfect basecamp for all that the area has to offer! It's just 15 minutes to the entrance gate at Mesa Verde National Park, designated in April of 2021 as the 100th Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association.
Take a scenic two mile drive to historic Downtown Mancos, to find art, dining, and fun. Historic Mancos, known for its thriving creative district, is the home of the The Raven House Gallery, The Artisans of Mancos Co-op, The Painted Turtle Gallery, Bombdiggity, and Kilgore American Indian Art.
Downtown Mancos is also home to dining options from local food trucks to fine dining. Fenceline Cidery and their delightful riverside cider garden host a variety of local food trucks on a rotating basis Family friendly eats are always on the menu at the Columbine Bar & Grill. Deco Dessert, offers something for your sweet tooth with homemade ice cream, artisan chocolates, and cakes. Just across Hwy 160, you can enjoy craft beer, delicious locally sourced food, and a variety of fun events, including live local music, weekly triviaat Mancos Brewing Company. Terrific! The spot is 10 minutes from Durango and far enough from the owners home that it felt private. And there are endless acres of forest for the dogs to explore. We had no problem accessing the site in our rwd Ford Transit. Verizon signal was adequate. Tree coverage made starlink useless.

This was my favorite campground and campsite for my cross country trip. I would have stayed several days had my schedule permitted it. I was on site 109 and it was such a great spot for stargazing! Loved having the picnic table, fire ring, water and electrical hookup! Quiet and peaceful. Beautiful surroundings. Host was very well organized for my late arrival, and very helpful when I needed assistance. Love this place!

Direct access to the north loops and a hot shower make this camp work paying for. The host, Jake, is really nice. He greeted me personally, described the private trails on his property and gave me a couple Zuma Bike Ranch stickers. Maybe it helped that I was the only guest that night.

Loved it! A high open plain ringed with mountains: Mesa Verde and Ute close, Telluride, San Juans and Bears Ears on the horizon. Immaculately clean and generous kitchen and dining/hanging out areas. The tent/RV sites are very basic but the rest makes up. Great hosts, dark sky. Didn’t see inside the cabins but the hogan was lovely.

Great campground! Everything was clean, staff was friendly the views are amazing!!! I highly recommend the Durango Hot Springs and Spa down the street! We went for a two hour soak and it was absolutely spectacular!!! Close proximity to the Spa and downtown were convient and the peaceful less of the campground were the perfect combination! We enjoyed our stay and will be back!!

Beautiful! Staff was very nice. We had a beautiful riverside cabin. The river was raging when we arrived due to days of downpours. I was concerned about potential flooding. While it was not near flood level, they kindly and quickly moved us to a cabin several hundred feet from the river bank.
