I am in the process of building a tree/shrub wind block. There's about .4 miles of dirt road to get to the property, there are some dips to watch out for but I come out here in a little Prius so it's manageable. Overall, there is an element of seclusion but occasionally people do drive by on the dirt road. I would rate the cell phone service a 7/10, it's pretty solid but can go out at times.

The campsite is a large flat area. For a trailer or RV it's a great place to park and the view is towards wide open spaces. With a tent or if you want more pure nature, you can drive out onto the property further towards the small ruin of the old homesteader's cabin or beyond. The property has a long-abandoned gold mine and circular arrastres where miners used mules to break up rocks. Nearby Acton has pick-your-own apples/pears/peaches at Bloom farms. We are at 3000 feet with strong sun during the day and cool mountains air at night. The camping is set away from structures, but if you want to stroll, closer to the ranch buildings, we have friendly small goats you can visit if interested and horses and a donkey to say hello to across the corral fence.

Hungry Valley SVRA is the third largest unit of California State Park's Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division. Located in the Tejon Pass north of Los Angeles and along the Interstate 5 corridor, Hungry Valley offers 19,000 acres and more than 130 miles of scenic trails for motorcycle, All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV), dune buggies, and 4x4 recreation. All levels of OHV operator skills will be challenged by the wide variety of terrain and trails at Hungry Valley SVRA. Elevations at Hungry Valley range from 3,000 to nearly 6,000 feet. Occasional snowfalls occur during the winter. Summers are most often hot, dry and dusty. The most pleasant times of the year for OHV fun are during the Spring and Fall months when the temperatures are mild and occasional rain showers make for good traction and reduced dust. Nighttime temperatures often drop below freezing in the Spring and Fall, as well as during the Winter. The wide variety of trails at Hungry Valley provides excitement for both beginner and experienced off-roaders. For experienced OHVers challenging trails can be found in the hills and sand washes of the back- country section of the SVRA. Beginners can enjoy the scenery and relative ease of the trails in the Native Grasslands Management Area. Trails in the adjoining Los Padres National Forest are recommended for experienced riders only.

We are the largest Arabian horse rescue in the United States. We are on 100 acres, but are currently using only 10 fenced acres for our horses. We have an average of 75 horses on our property. Most live in larger areas or paddocks in group "herds". We focus on rehabilitation and training with the goal of finding permanent homes for our horses. However, we have about 30+ horses who are "sanctuary horses", either because they are older, or were traumatized, or have health issues, thus will not be rideable. This was originally a Girl Scout camp called Singing Pines back in the 30’s. You’ll see as you roam around some of the original buildings and structures. It hasn’t been in operation as a Girl Scout camp for over 30 years. The bigger building is an Airbnb for groups. They will also have access to the lake. DIRECTIONS: Take Exit for Angeles Crest Hwy (Hwy 2) from the 210 Go North, up the mountain for 29 miles Turn left on Sulpher Springs Rd Go about a mile and you will see a Singing Pines sign up on a hill on the right side. There is a white gate which is usually open but if it's closed go ahead and open it. Go down that driveway about a mile and turn left at the fork. Follow that road down and around the lake staying to the right. Once you passed the lake there will be a little uphill and the location is on the left. Learn more about this land: The Skoolie is a converted short bus with two love seats that convert to an RV queen bed, sink, stove top, dinette, and over head lights. Outside is a private meadow with a short walk to a small lake. You can bring your fishing gear. It's stocked with Bass and Bluegill. Outside the Skoolie is a picnic table, fire pit (firewood $10 a bundle) and a hammock. Up the hill, a very short walk is the private campground toilet facility. This is not shared with anyone else. No cell phone reception no linens bring a sleeping bag or warm blankets. You can charge your phone in the Skoolie for a sunrise alarm or just to take pictures.

We had another great stay camping on the field! The weather was perfect for summer, warm and breezy during the day and even slightly chilly overnight. Stargazing was wonderful including catching a few shooting stars. Little trails on site continue to be calming to explore. We appreciated the generous shade of the tree canopy. Plenty of insect life around but not uncomfortable (note: we encountered a few wasps/hornets but had no issue once food removed). Clean porta potty. Rachel is kind and great to communicate with. This may be our go-to campsite for a quick, local private getaway outdoors.

2 nights at Tiny Home Cabin in the Hills

I was looking for a quiet place to relax and reset and this tiny cabin was perfect! I particularly loved having my morning coffee on the deck and listening to the ravens, red-tailed hawks, peacocks, and occasional whinny from the neighboring horse stables - it was peaceful and such a nice change from the sounds of the city only a few minutes away. Araceli is a wonderful host and made sure I knew my way around the features of the camp! I will definitely keep this in mind for if I need another LA-area staycation or if I need to recommend a great retreat to any of my friends.

Tent camping here for our small family and pup far exceeded expectations! The field was spacious with a small deck with solar powered lights, a tree canopy offering needed shade, and sunflowers blooming with pollinators in action (I've never seen so many butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and ladybugs in one day!) Greatly appreciated the sense of privacy, freedom to explore onsite trails, and convenience of a clean porta-potty and water spigot near the barn. Rachel was awesome to communicate with, offering clear instructions with considerate flexibility. Looking forward to returning!

John is the type of host that makes Hipcamp special. He is welcoming, thorough, and has clearly put much thought and detail into his camp. Site 1 was fairly level and spacious. It was also near a very clean and unique complex of bathrooms, sinks, and showers. The road up was rough but easily doable without 4WD if you're careful. My family had a great stay and would certainly camp here again next time we're in Tehachapi!

Weekend Trip to Old West Mountain Camping Near LA!

Had a last minute trip to stay here and it was so lovely! The campground itself had a picnic table and a few tree stumps that could be used as chairs. We watched the sunset and overnight heard the sound of birds and crickets. In the morning we woke up and after we had made our own breakfast we went to feed the horse and see the goats and also feed their 70-year-old tortoise named Benito on the property. They provided us with some board games to play with at the campsite which was so thoughtful. I really loved staying here. It was a very great way to get to camp within an hour of Los Angeles. Would definitely recommend.

Arminda & Alex are the best hosts you could ask for. This place was easy to find, and the couple and their family were nothing but lovely. The camping spots were serene and private. The hiking was fantastic and when they asked if we needed anything at all, we inquired about forgotten batteries. Not only did they provide them for us, they went out of their way to get them. I recommend lots of sunscreen but all in all I will recommend this place to everyone and be going back myself soon in the future!
