Camping @ Quail Run Ostrich Ranch

7 sites · RVs, Tents62 acres · Lake Hughes, CA
Run by three generations, our ranch has been in our family for more than 70 years. We opened our doors to the public in 2014 to help support feeding our animals, bred and rescued, after the Powerhouse Fire almost burned us out. We’ve survived a county quarantine(2018-2019), the COVID Lockdowns (2021-2022), the Lake Fire (2020), and the Hurricane Kay burn scar debris flow and flood (9/11/22), depending on hard work and strong family and community bonds. In addition to camping and educational tours, we host private and community events, grow and sell produce and eggs, hatch and sell chicks, rescue ratites, and support the local bee population (which gives us RAW honey to sell), and are working to open a private U-pick-by-appointment orchard. We are all animal lovers, and conservationists, and try to do our part to ensure our children inherit a healthy and viable world. This is our home where we live, work, love, and play. We enjoy sharing our space with visitors who we hope learn about ostrich and make some great memories.

Camping in Saddleback Butte State Park guide

Overview

About

Escape to this state park in Antelope Valley that epitomizes the Southern California high desert. The 2,995-acre wonderland of serenity lies east of Lancaster and a doable 90-minute drive from Los Angeles.

The park was created in 1960 to protect the butte and preserve the high-desert Joshua tree woodlands. Saddleback's 2,455-foot elevation on the western edge of the Mojave Desert clears the world-weary mind and inspires the soul.

The highlight of the state park is the 3,651-foot summit of Saddleback Butte. Park in the picnic area, fill your water bottles and set out on the paved nature trail. It turns into a rock-lined path known as Little Butte Trail. This leads you directly toward Saddleback Butte. A 4.8-mile round-trip to the summit rewards you with jaw-dropping views.

The campground offers 40 sites with a table, fire ring, and grill. Come in spring when it's nothing but a carpet of yellow coreopsis as far as the eye can see.

Notable campgrounds

  • Family Campsites: Nestled among native Joshua trees, these sites offer a traditional camping experience with a desert twist.
  • Group Campsites: Ideal for larger gatherings, these sites accommodate up to 30 people, perfect for a desert adventure with friends.
  • RV Access: With facilities catering to RVs up to 30 feet, the park ensures a comfortable stay for those on the road.

  • Plan ahead and arrive early, as the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Visit during off-peak seasons for a better chance at securing a spot amid the park's tranquil beauty.
  • Keep your group size within the maximum limit of eight people per campsite to ensure a smooth reservation process.
  • Explore nearby camping options to maximize your chances of finding the perfect spot.

When to go
